Seventeen out of 18 political parties contesting the Sept 21 Edo governorship election have signed a peace accord ahead of the election.

Chairman Of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anthony Aziegbemi and the party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who were present during the signing of the peace accord, declined to sign.

Aziegbemi told newsmen that they were declining because 10 members of the party were currently being detained by the police in Abuja.

He said: “We are here to register our protest before the peace committee and to say that the PDP will not sign peace accord when 10 of our members have been arrested and detained by the police in Abuja.”

It would be recalled that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday during the stakeholders meeting, said he was not aware that PDP members were arrested in the state.

“However, I am aware that individuals who committed crimes and political violence in the state have been arrested,” Egbetokun said.

17 others sign

The signing of the peace accord is coming barely nine days to the governorship election in the state.

The Convener of the National Peace Committee, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, charged the candidates to see peace as a foundation for credible election.

Kukah said that the task before the committee was to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a peaceful election devoid of violence.

“We should be thankful for our country because some other African countries are in crisis because of unresolved political issues.

”Let us thank God that we have the opportunity in Nigeria to stretch our hands in search for justice.

”I am happy that Nigerians are having confidence in the electoral process. A worst election is remedied by another election,” he said.

Kukah urged Edo people to go out and cast their votes, saying that Edo should count themselves lucky having produced top politicians in Nigeria.

In his welcome remarks, the Chairman, National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, said the ceremony was a commitment to uphold the peace, unity, and democratic values of the nation.

Abubakar noted that since the committee formation in 2014, it had worked tirelessly to foster an environment where every Nigerian could exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear of violence or intimidation.

He appealed to candidates, parties and their supporters to remember that peace was the foundation upon which progress and development was built and established.

Also speaking, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, assured that INEC would continue to play its part in line with the electoral laws.

Yakubu thanked the Peace committee for bringing the political parties and their candidates together to agree to a peaceful election.

The Inspector-General of Police, on his part, noted that the police in collaboration with other security agencies would be supporting INEC in conducting the election.

According to him, “we will remain impartial, professional and vigilante while providing a level playing ground for political parties and their candidates.”

Gov. Godwin Obaseki, however, assured the Peace Committee of the safety of all stakeholders during and after the election..

Re: Edo Guber: PDP Declines To Sign Peace Accord by emkz: 6:52pm On Sep 12
Obaseki had told the Peace Accord Committee that he had reservations about PDP signing the peace accord.

He claimed some PDP members had been arrested without recourse to him.

The police said one of those arrested was on suspicion of being involved in the murder of a policeman in Benin City.

That is a justifiable reason to arrest someone.

To Asue Ighodalo, you have run a good campaign when Obaseki was not openly involved. Now Obaseki has involved himself, he is causing problems.

Asue Ighodalo, this is bad optics for you. Do not let Obaseki mislead you and seem to be controlling things. You are a big name with a reputation to protect. Obaseki has acquired a lot of enemies for himself with the way he fights like there is no future. Asue, do not inherit Obaseki's enemies. If you want to succeed, put peace in front.

Asue, all through your years of corporate leadership, you have not been associated with a scandal. Now is not the time to mess up the hard-built reputation.

As they say, morning shows the day. You should have signed that peace accord for the symbolism. After signing, you can go and start enmity in your politics.

You have not set a good example today.

PS: The peace signing accord is one of only two deliberate opportunities for the contestants to meet, shake hands, hug and create photo-ops to show that election is not war. In 2015 Adamu Mu'azu of PDP and Oyegun of APC shared a hug, as did Contestants Jonathan and Buhari. It is shameful that any time peace meetings are called, Obaseki starts bringing up issues to prolong chaos. No one enjoys chaos except someone who profits from it. Asuerinme Ighodalo, if you win, refrain from making enemies for yourself. They are distractions. Make friends by being fair to all parties. Obaseki's enemies should not be your enemies.

That peace accord signing ceremony is just a farce... A joke taken seriously by the naive and gullible.

Men go dey sign peace accord while arming and equipping thugs to dismantle polling booths and steal ballot boxes.

Good one. When people are public stopped from voting and all sorts of violence is visited on the citizens in broad day light, the peace committee will say nothing.

The committee is illegal and a waste of resources.

With people like this Nigeria will remain a shit hole, a Zoo.

Despite all the grievances PDP listed all you could spew was this shit...

They brought Wike's close associates as Police commissioner and INEC commissioner,
They arrested 10 of their party stalwarts and whisked them to Abuja, obviously to keep them away from the elections.

But all you could process was this pooo you typed up there.

Nigeria will happen to you, I bet you.

But in the other past elections.. presidential election, governorship election, political parties have been signing peace accords but at the election they will still be violence, ballot box snatching, destruction of polling units and other violence...it's the desperation of this candidates to desperately win this election that causes all this election violence inorder to go there into political positions/ office ..to loot money even if they have signed peace accords

The guy that's refused to be interviewed on Arise tv , refused to debate and also promised the good people of Edo INSECURITY has signed the peace accord, this is a step in the right direction.
I believe all other candidates should sign the peace accord too.

We know it's all just formality anyways tongue
