But, in a statement, Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media, said, "The Edo State government insists that the ESC is a body set up by law passed by the Edo State House of Assembly. The Edo State Government has said that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has no constitutional power to suspend the Edo Security Corps, as it is a creation of the Edo State House of Assembly. The IGP had at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)'s Stakeholder Meeting on Wednesday, September 11, announced that the outfit had been suspended ahead of the September 21 governorship election in the state. But, in a statement, Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media, said, "The Edo State government insists that the ESC is a body set up by law passed by the Edo State House of Assembly. "This is tantamount to the IGP disbanding the Western Nigeria Security Network popularly known as Operation Amotekun ahead of the governorship election in Ondo State billed for next month." He added however that in the interest of peace in the state, Governor Godwin Obaseki has directed that all the officials of the ESC should proceed on leave from Wednesday, September 11 till 23, after the election. "Government notes that it is unconstitutional for the IGP to make such a declaration since Sec 11 (1), Sec 11 (2) empowers the State House of Assembly to set up structures for public safety and security of the state, " he noted. https://saharareporters.com/2024/09/11/edo-govt-says-nigerian-police-chief-lacks-power-suspend-state-owned-security-outfit 1 Like |

ESC is constitutionally established, that's a fact, but unlike the police, army and other security operatives, ESC lacks the constitutional power of providing security for electoral process. Nigeria Police may not have the power to ban ESC, but can surely suspend/disengage ESC from the coming election. |

favor914: It's because of the overzealousness of individuals like the police IG that when there's insecurities, the president is blamed. The governor is the chief security officer of the state, but the commissioner of police in the state doesn't receive orders from him. The commissioner of police receives orders from the IG. Now when the same governor, through an act by the state house of assembly, sets up a quasi-security outfit to help combat crime, the Police IG will turn around to ban it. The police IG receives orders from the president, which invariably means that the president is to blame when there's insecurities. |

Kobojunkieee:ESC has no business with election. It is not within their jurisdiction. Remember osagie made reference to amotekun in that report. I was in southwest during the last general election and I noticed that amotekun were not directly involved. You could feel their presence in the streets but I didn't see any amotekun in the coalition centers and polling units. That's it. Pls don't reply me if you don't have genuine argument to counter this opinion. 🙏 |

richiemcgold:It is a state-recognized outfit that supplements security in Edo State, and the election in question is taking place, yes, in Edo State. So where does this claim of yours come from? ![]() 2. Well, the decision not to have Amotekun provide security support during elections is entirely up to the Oyo State government. Nothing stops the Edo State Government from deploying its own security outfit in its state during elections as well. ![]() |

richiemcgold:The land on which the activity is being carried out remains State land; Unless the particular venue is Federal government property, what you are insisting does not make sense. So long as residents of the state are involved, the state can and should provide additional security where it deems it necessary. ![]() 2. I used Oyo State's Amotekun as a particular instance in this case. ![]() |
