Is It Okay For A Woman To Hug And Go Close To A 'masquerade' Like This Oyinbo? by glammagazine: 8:03am On Oct 06 |
This photo of a "whyte" woman hugging a supposed masquerade at an event in London has left some tongues wagging. While some say the "man" is just putting on a costume like the famous Lagbaja, others argued that it's a masquerade and it's not okay for a woman to hug it like that, let a lone an oyinbo. In some tradition, especially some parts of Igbo and Yoruba, Masquerades are performed only by males in exclusive secret societies and involve the use of elaborate, colorful costumes that are meant to invoke ancestral spirits. "Conversely, women are prohibited from touching the masks or even understanding the spiritual meaning behind the mask. Women are able to observe the ceremony and many do so, but they are careful to keep their distance. Both genders work to maintain the secrecy surrounding the ceremony, as it is forbidden to share the process outside of the mask making societies." What do you think? |

Not her culture and that is not a Caucasian. That is an Asian, likely Filipino or Chinese. If told, she would respect the tradition. Obviously no one cared to educate her. 1 Like |
