A stranger-than-fiction report has linked an ex-minister with the storage of a huge sum of money in overhead water tanks in his country home. An unconfirmed report revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigators stumbled on the alleged “hidden treasure”, when a surprise visit was paid to the ex-minister’s country home while he was abroad.

When the Commission was contacted by Sunday Tribune on the alleged discovery, its spokesperson, Osita Nwajah, neither confirmed nor denied the alleged visit and the discovery, saying that he would rather not talk about the matter. The part of the story that got Nwajah talking was the allegation that EFCC investigators tampered with their discovery. His anger was unmistakable in a 4-page text message response sent to the Sunday Tribune.

Quoting his response; Nwajah wrote; “I’m not sure even you want to give EFCC deserved credit for being a disciplined, committed, professional and focused law enforcement agency. “Otherwise you would have thrown that malicious tale, designed like many others, to bring down EFCC by targeting officials integrity, into the waste bin where it belongs.

“What are they going to tell you next? That when once our men were chasing 419ers, they chanced on the fraudsters pot of soup and decided to help themselves”. A request, to confirm whether there was a visit or not, after the text message was received, was rebuffed by the commission’s image-maker, who curtly replied, “please, I don’t want to say anything about it.”

Sunday Tribune source, who spoke on the alleged visit and the discovery, was not sure of how much was found kept in the hoisted water tanks, as well as how much was allegedly tampered with by the visitors. The source, however, described the sum as “huge”. The last time such discovery story was made public in government circles was during the regime of late General Sani Abacha.

A military administrator in one of the North-Central zone states had died in a plane-crash and his father, reportedly, informed Abacha, while the latter was on a condolence visit, that the deceased had told him that he was keeping some money for the late head of state. The bereaved father reportedly told Abacha that the money, which was said to be in hard currencies, was being kept in overhead water tanks in the late Colonel’s private residence.

The military officers that reportedly brought the tanks down to relocate the “hidden treasure”, were said to have looted it, with some of them reportedly sanctioned. The ex-minister dramatically fell out with President Olusegun Obasanjo, despite the public impression that the top politician was a member of the President’s think-tank. Immediately he was relieved of his job, he joined forces with the opposition to discredit the Obasanjo administration

Wonders they say will never end.

Our people refused to learn from history, thus they allow history to repeat itself.

This is very sad for the country.
