The Hidden Self-interest: Are We Truly Living For God Or For Ourselves? by idhigbe(m): 4:21am On Oct 26, 2024 |
The Bible reminds us, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1). This verse calls us to recognize that any action done without love, no matter how noble it appears, is ultimately empty. Today, however, many of us have unknowingly become lovers of ourselves. Greed and selfishness have crept in, often concealed by various facades. In politics, business, and even religion, people are driven by personal gain rather than a genuine desire to serve others. Politicians and social leaders focus on self-benefit, rarely hesitating to sacrifice others' well-being to reach their goals. We judge them, seeing the harm their actions cause to society. But these problems go far beyond political corruption. Depending on the region, issues like drug cartels, mafia syndicates, and cults wreak havoc in their relentless pursuit of power and wealth. Ritualistic groups and secret societies manipulate or destroy lives in their desire for control. In some cases, religious extremism fuels violence—certain factions within Islam, for example, carry out acts of terror with the belief that their actions will secure eternal rewards, including promises of heavenly riches and virgins. Meanwhile, some governments and factions engage in warfare under the guise of "justice" or "defense," while the underlying motive is often the acquisition of power, territory, or resources. These are all seen as morally and ethically wrong, and as Christians, we are inclined to judge them as such, grounded in our convictions. But if we’re honest, even our religious pursuits are often fueled by a similar desire for personal gain. Many of us devote ourselves to pious living, attend church, and engage in acts of service, motivated by the hope of heavenly reward. Though we aren’t harming others directly, are we truly motivated by love for God, or are we primarily thinking of what we will gain in eternity? Across every scenario—whether it’s the violent acts of extremists, the exploitation in politics, the destruction caused by drug lords, or even the personal quests for spiritual rewards—the root is the same: personal or group interest. Each is driven by “What’s in it for me?” The outward expressions vary, but at the core, it’s a pursuit of self-benefit. In this light, no one can claim moral superiority. We are all inclined to act in self-interest. But is this what God desires? Or does He call us to a love that moves beyond personal gain, a faith that serves Him out of devotion rather than reward? The question we face is whether we are living as God intended or if we have allowed our faith to become another avenue for fulfilling self-centered desires. |

The truth about pure worship is that God wants each of us to benefit maximally: Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: Isaiah 48:17-18 Highlighted in blue talks about PROFIT while the red talks about PEACE and RIGHTEOUSNESS. But how do we profit and at the same time be righteous and still have peace? That's what Jesus of Nazareth came to teach us because most humans thought it's only when someone else loose that they can gain but Jesus taught us otherwise. How? Jesus made us to understand that there is one thing we seek in whatever we do: Happiness! So instead of focusing on ourselves Jesus taught us to think of how happy we will be when we put smile on the faces of others {Luke 6:38; Act 20:35} by so doing we will make triple profit: (1) We are happy to be the reason behind the smile on our neighbor's face. (2) Someone is happy due to what we did. (3) God is pleased because we believe in what His only begotten Son taught us. No wonder Jesus could say about those doing this: “Stop storing up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal. Rather, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 But how can we do this and be sure we aren't promoting greed? You will notice that throughout the Bible there is no single place where a servant of God gave a beggar money. Don't be surprised because there is no beggar among the worshipers of the true God {Psalms 23:1} but God's people used to assist one another when the need arises which means it's someone who has something doing they will assist not a professional beggar who doesn't want to do any work. So to practice the type of giving Jesus taught you must know your fellow believers because whatever you do to them you're giving God! Matthew 25:34-40 But when you give faithless miscreants who are greedy then instead of giving thanks to God for sending you to assist them they will start trailing you for more because from their thinking you must have too much before giving out since they weren't taught the same so you end up giving a robber who will come back to steal from you! ![]() |

I am 100% sure I am living for myself and I AM enjoying it to the full nest... I am God(pure consciousness) living within a physical body made from dust. After this life is over, I go back being God....I may decide to comeback here again...if I desire..or go and explore other world. The laws of this world firmly written in my heart....I am walking with and in perfect unity with the source.... Whatever I desire, I speak it into existence...and it is established... |
