40 Die In Rivers Boat Mishap

No fewer than 40 persons were feared dead on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State when a passenger boat carrying 47 passengers capsized and emptied its human content into the Rumuolumeni River.
The unfortunate incident, according to reports happened around 9:30 pm while the boat was travelling from high-brow Eagle Island in the state capital.
The Rumuolumeni River passes through the back of the expansive premises of the Italian oil giant, the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) to Iwofe, Port Harcourt.
Seven of the passengers, including a two-year-old baby, had so far been rescued, while divers, as at press time, were still combing the river for corpses of the victims.
Relatives of the victims have besieged the Rumuolumeni jetty; the Rivers State government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH), where corpse of one of the victims was deposited and other hospitals in Port Harcourt, for information on passengers of the ill-fated boat.

Marine safety is obviously not as popular as the FRSC. I think the FG should harmonize it all into Federal Transportation Safety Commission (FTSC) so that all means of transportation can be looked into with the same attention.

Sad story. Drowning is not funny to imagine.

Another waste of human beings due to the neglect of some important issues.
If you check the whole of that boat, you may not see two life jackets,
whereas if such means of transportation is unavoidable in that region,
there is nothing wrong in the Govt. mandating every boat to be well equipped.
Anyway, nothing concern the leaders as majority of them have their own fly-boats.
RIP to the "wasted lives".

another unfortunate case of no one cares!we've had several water mishap in this country, the aftermath of all this must have brought an agency in charge of inland waterways safety; where are they? once they have been tipped all is well, the operators also do not care about the lives of the people in case a mishap, the commuters did not come together to make lifejacket a must before boarding. sad some might complain but many will say E NO GO HAPPEN why u dey think bad thing.lets see if someone will be held responsible, that is the only way to stop bad things happening.may the soul of the departed RIP.

Yes it will be investigated, a 7man panel of enquiry will be set, their report will be submitted after 3 months and that will be the end of it until another one occurs months after. You will be surprised that those who should take responsibilty for sefety in our waterways are even thanking God that its "just 40 people". We'v lost dignity for human lives, maybe its the consequence of over population afterall sometimes scarcity creates value. May their souls RIP!

9p.m? I thought it was against Nigerian Marine law to travel after 7pm on our inland water ways.
All the same, may the souls of the victims rest in peace.

RIP to all the dead and congratulation to the survivors. Government is unable to maintain road safety and now marine safety and compliance is out of hand, What a country.

May there souls rest in peace.

This always happen when you have greedy boat owners and drivers who will carry over-load just because of extra coins. The passengers as well, never patient and thinking straight. How can one board a boat when it is very clear that it is overloaded (even if it's a ship) and at that time of the night, gosh.

No matter how bad the traffic is, from Agip to Rumuolumeni, it will always be free by 10pm. If they can wait until 9pm, why not be patient for the next hour. People need to put on their thinking cap sometimes. It's a pity. May their souls RIP.
Re: 40 Die In Rumuolumeni River Boat Mishap In Rivers State by EagleNest(m): 4:05am On Dec 15, 2011
Safety is one thing Nigeria as a nation has not taken so serious. Air, waterways & road safety is grossly inadequately enforced by govt in nigeria. People shuld however value their lives more by insisting on safety standards. So many lives have been lost carelessly and yet another 40 added. Na wa oo!
