This is what I keep saying. Everybody had blamed the government accusing corruption.

Some even said it is because the government is not structure well that makes corruption lives.

But 85% of people here on nairaland.com even though they complain, analyze everything as if they are saint will swindle you if they see chance.

So who do we still blame now - government?

Employ them in your store, your company, your gateman, etc. They will find a way to swindle you while they go home blaming the government for corruption

Business is really hard in Nigeria if you are not there 247,
We are too wicked, greedy and dishonest.

Less than a week, I employed this boy o, to manage my gas filling retail business and POS.
He displayed passion, initiative and experience about the gas filling business and handling of POS....so I just took the chance, we also speak same language. I've been acting nice and all but I think I now know why most Nigerian bosses are mean to their workers by default
.
Now from first cylinder we couldn't account for 10kg
Second cylinder was started today by him......when I told him to calculate everything sold from first cylinder based on daily record book ....it felt short of 10kg
.
From the sales from second cylinder that started today, The account book does not tally with what is remitted through ATM/POS mode of payment .....I dint know this until I checked my Moniepoint acct as I got home now cos my phone was dead before I went to the shop this evening
.
Even the POS part of the business does not tally with the cash I gave him this morning for people who need cash withdrawal
.
I'm boiling right now realizing the boy had lied to me when balancing the account this night using the record book, only to get home and power my phone to see cash fell short of 23k in my monie point acct linked to the POS
.
.
How do you handle boys who think they are smarter than you because theyve been in the business before?
.
And what are your experiences with dishonest workers in your business , especially this gas retail business or POS business
.
Modoified: how do I handle this case now....cos my mind is just boiling ....how can a new business fall short of 38k in less than 7 days...

Did you asked why he left his former job

The problem of Nigeria is that an average Nigerian think and behave like an average politicians and civil servants in power.

The young ones are the worse, they are very myopic in their thinking and throw caution to the wind at every given chance.

Concerning the pos business don't tell any of your staff to do transfer deposit to anyone they should only deal with withdrawal and with only withdrawal they don't need your business pin it was the customer that will insert his or her card pin when trying to withdraw.
I have more than 16 pos stand at lagos Island idumota market and I don't give any of them my pin because i only order them to do card withdrawal and transfer to the pos account which will be accepted when it enters so they don't need my pin for any reason.
Go and change your business pin now and order that your staff not to do transfer deposit again, if he doesn't know new pin again now you will see how you will have peace of mind Concerning the pos business.
Concerning the gas business those who know about it will enlighten you more about it.
Goodluck sir.

shocked

My deductions from your write up;

You are the business owner
You employed a new boy out of sentiment
You are obviously tribalistic
You have other sources of income
You are too busy for this start up
Your new employee serves as both manager and worker
You left so much lacuna for an experienced dude
You probably don't have experience in this lines of business
You are loosing funds and it's too early for that.

My take;
Tell the boy you will fire him if you continue noticing discrepancies
Hire a manager from another tribe or gender. Fire anyone of them when they start conspiracies.
Get a CCTV cam for the active biz points
Shun tribalism. There are good and bad people in all tribes and regions sir.

Lastly, HOW DID YOU GET THE MONEY TO START THE BUSINESS
KARMA IS DAMN REAL. If you stole from someone to start your coy, someone else will steal you dry no matter how hard you try.

God bless you
Visit the plant unawares (don't let anyone know your movements)

Business is hard to run in Nigeria due to our stealing culture. If you are not there to monitor it in person, it will be very difficult not to fall short. You don't really need an experienced hand to start with, you can get an inexperience person and train him to start. An experienced person will also come with some experience in manipulations.
I remember the last time, I took my car for repairs, the rewire guy bought items of N200 but charged me N2,000 for each item and sent his boy (10-12years) who was learning and well grounded in the scheme grin

With police or boys Brigade?

I ask because he may end up spending more than N40k to recover the N38k if care is not taken.

Is the boy Nigerian? If yes then you should have gotten a girl instead... Our ladies still fear God . But you see the boys and men?

Handle them with extreme caution, as you re calculating, they are calculating too.

Don't let comments here turn you to a beast that you are not. Show him all his flaws then show him the door without pay. That way , you save yourself the stress and more spending.

Any business you cannot manage by yourself is just empowerment to others in this country

From my little experience I will say most small scale businesses can comfortably pay their workers about 100k per month but they would rather choose to pay them about 30k.

Before you employed him, was there a guarantor that he brought Incase of unforseen circumstances?
Secondly, if there was non, get him arrested with your prove for him to pay and dismissed him.
Try and monitor your business constantly and as a business person don't ever allow your phone to off for alert and deduction.

You don't need to do all that, sack him right away. If you can't sack him immediately, get someone to monitor him or monitor him yourself pending the find a replacement for him. Arresting me is another expenses and distraction entirely.

If you like employ another boy, you may lose more.
If you like employ a cousin or brother, that one fit even bad as in na family meeting go settle am and loss na loss.
If you cannot monitor your moneyflow, don't start a business in Nigeria. Trust is hard.

On the contrary, don't sack him. Simply tell him you know he has been stealing from you, also tell him the estimated amount. Tell him you've forgiven him for that, but if it happens again, you will have him arrested and he will pay back all the money.

This might work psychologically. It might prompt him to try to get in your good books and totally change.

You are 1,000,000% correct.

It's really saddening. Most people are not cheating or stealing currently because the opportunities have not presented themselves.

Of course to a very large extent, the leadership is a reflection of the masses

I've been trying to psychoanalyze this boy since he started ....my mind wasn't at rest because certain things I discerned about him ....I dint know he will bite so soon.
.
I also now understand why he sort made a mild argument abt my firm insistence on record, record, and my style and design of the record book...which he claimed was not the conventional style that every other people he worked with used.....I had to say that's how I want my own record book to be.

Don't boil yet?

I will advice... Do you understand the Gas business too?

If Yes! Then devote 2 days ,. Work with your Boy from Start to Finish.. for 2 days...

If the Records are intact, Show him.... That you see there are no short fall today!

Then your boy cannot be the Sales boy and still be in charge of Money....

Let him handle the Stock , get another honest staff to handle the Cash and POS...

Then get your Wife to be involved if married.

Your first mistake is taking someone more experienced than you to manage your business.

It's always wise to get someone that will learn on the job with you....especially for a new business.
