OPEN LETTER TO HIS EXCELLENCY, Biodun Oyebanji , EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF EKITI STATE

Dear Governor Abiodun Oyebanji,
Concerns Regarding the Proposed Trip by the Ekiti State House of Assembly
I am writing as a concerned citizen of Ekiti State, deeply troubled by recent information /correspondence circulating on social media about a planned trip by Ekiti State House of Assembly members to Canada. At a time when our state faces economic hardship, with high living costs, widespread hunger, and job losses impacting every corner of our state, this proposed trip seems to be an extravagant and unjustifiable expenditure.

As elected representatives, our lawmakers should focus on addressing the urgent needs of Ekiti residents. Our infrastructure is deteriorating, roads are disrepair, and numerous communities lack essential amenities. Many families are struggling to make ends meet, and our economy is in dire need of support.

Governor, as someone born and raised in Ekiti, you understand our challenges. It was your deep connection to Ekiti and your understanding of our struggles that won you our trust. While it may be within the legislative rights of Assembly members to undertake such a trip, it needs to be more appropriate and timely. Recently, even Mr. President publicly called for reducing government expenses—why can't our lawmakers also heed this advice?
Instead of traveling abroad, I propose that our lawmakers consider visiting other developed states within Nigeria, such as Lagos or Rivers, to engage in meaningful tasks or postpone this trip. This approach would reduce costs, foster inter-state cooperation, and offer valuable insights closer to home. If travel is essential, could they cover the expenses, given their substantial allowances?

I urge you, as our governor, to the leadership of the Ekiti House of Assembly to shelve this trip given our current economic challenges and prioritize our people's well-being. Ekiti has tremendous potential, and with prudent, people-centered leadership, we can achieve progress without excessive spending. Let us focus on rebuilding Ekiti by investing in essential services such as road maintenance, healthcare, education, and economic development. Remember that the voices and concerns of everyday Ekiti citizens echo the need for wise spending and sound leadership. Remember, Mr. Governor, this will be a litmus for your office and will possibly impact your re-election.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,

Signed:
Benjamin Adejuwon
