BENIN – NIGERIANS living with Diabetes, prostrate enlargement and bosom cancer can now heave a sign of relief as a Nigerian University lecturer and researcher, Prof. Ernest Izivbigie has discovered cure for the ailments.

Prof. Izevbigie who is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Benson Idahosa University, Benin using local bitter leafs which is well grown in the country, has produced the drug which is now in high demand in Europe and America.

The drug “Edolite”, according to Prof. Izevbigie is very potent in the management of diabetes, prostrate enlargement in men and bosom cancer in women is currently produced in America and would be produced locally in Nigeria as from February 2012.

He told newsmen yesterday in Benin that the drug which is currently available in some Pharmaceutical stores in the country especially in Benin and Lagos has measured up the standard specifications as required in Europe and America.

For his feat in advancing the cure of the ailments, Prof. Izevbigie has been inducted into the United States Academy of Inventors.

seems like there are various "cures" for diabetes.

but I think that diabetes is kind of a wear and tear disease. if u abuse ur system too much, it starts to wear out. slowly but gradually.

Absolutely not. The cure for diabetes will be a world wide news, not something tucked in an obscure corner of a Nigerian newspaper.

If true, he had better patent the thing quick quick b/4 these greedy/racist Pharmaceutical Conglomerates lay their hands on the formula.

Having said that, Bitter Leaf Soup is delicious and if all you need to manage your diabetes is a hot plate of Bitter Leaf Soup and pounded Yam once a day, surely that can't be a bad thing.

Benin people are known for their powerful herbal plants . . . if only those precious plants were properly documented to serve the future generations . .Than the trend of taking the knowledge to the grave in the name of family tradition . . .it either dies with them or all is lost  sad

How do we manage to come up with this kind of things, even with the name university attached to the institution?

Don't get me wrong. There might be "some" basis for claiming his portion can do something for those with one or more of these diseases, but to transport that into the realm of high demand in Europe and America should cause anybody to doubt even that potential.

If you reall understand the syndrome called diabetes ' CURE' is an error actually committed by the poster. I believed prof didn't claim that.

He didnt get a cure for it. The artcle explained that the drug can ''manage'' and not cure diabetics.

Scam!!! Another hungary man who wants to make a fortune from leaves, lol

I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the claims, either to manage or to cure.More power to the Prof's elbow.

Herbal formulations( containing bitter leaf in mixtures with other plant materials) using indigenous knowledge have always proven effective in the management of diabetics. Scientific curiosities only elucidated which of the molecular fractions provided such efficacy using Animal models. To me, the real discovery was done by the rural Professors ( Men and Women) who provide primary health care through the practices of Ethno-botany and Ethno-medicine.

I would be a bit more cautious before believing this. A cure for diabetes would definitely be a major news story.

The low-self-esteemed "pull them down" syndrome continues among Nigerians. While some are fooling themselves talking shiit here, the US has quickly recognised the man's work.

Is it surprising that we are not developed when so many mud munching fools jump up and insult their own? angry angry angry

(JACKSON, Miss.) – Five Jackson State University researchers were recognized as pioneers in their fields July 21 during an induction ceremony into the National Academy of Inventors.

The inductees include biology professors Ernest B. Izevbigie and Hari Parshad Cohly and chemistry professors Paresh Ray, Ming-Ju Huang and Kenneth S. Lee.  Also inducted was former JSU biology professor John E. Piletz, who worked with Huang and Lee on the patent they received.

JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers opened the ceremony by thanking the researchers for their commitment to science and to the university.

“Thank you for putting Jackson State on the map of innovation,” Meyers said. “Because of you, the university’s image soars even higher.”

Earlier this year, Jackson State became a charter member of the National Academy of Inventors, which was founded at the University of South Florida to recognize inventors who have a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The JSU researchers are the first inventors at Jackson State to be inducted into the academy.

Ernest B. Izevbigie

Izevbigie has earned two patents, including one for a formula he created from a Nigerian herbal shrub called Veronica amygdalina, or bitter leaf. Izevbigie’s research led to the formation of the JSU-initiated company EdoBotanics, which sells dietary supplements to boost the immune system and help with the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. The government of Nigeria recently gave the company its approval to manufacture and sell the dietary capsules in the country.

their is a right and a wrong way to publish such discoveries. the burden of diabetes worldwide is so great that if this were true this guy would be the richest man in the world.
why do we love to deceive ourselves.

Really? I will keep on pitying Nigerians and their "pull them down" syndrome.
Perhaps, you do not appreciate the weight of the words, cancer and diabetes. The press will always exagerate, just as the West will always snatch our best minds, because we are too low-self-esteemed to recognise them.

I don't know which is more depressing, the fact that a newspaper published an unverified story as if it is fact or the fact that some people believe the unverified story.

There is a regulatory body called the FDA that is responsible for licensing new drugs. Their operations are in the public domain.
For a drug to be passed for diabetes it must undergo a trial and be published .There is no secrecy about this.
Diabetes is such a huge cause of morbidity that a cure is not likely to be a secret and cannot be "pulled down" if it works.
If you have problems with self esteem why not get help? not every Nigerian is afflicted so your pity is misplaced.
There are hundreds of drugs out there and they are NOT discovered or released on the pages of Newspapers.
If he performed a trial he shoul publish it for review by his peers that is the convention.
Rather than telling us the drug is "very potent" we would like to know what type of Diabetes and the profile of those treated so far and what their current status is. Have they stopped taking Insulin or oral hypoglcemics.

@ aribisala0, I seriously doubt that the prof in question actually claimed specifically that he had a "cure" for these conditions.  In fact, I'm pretty sure that he knows that he doesn't, because any biologist who thought they had such a thing would immediately try and get recognition for that so that they could go on to cure people and also go on to get the prestigious prizes that would undoubtedly follow. He knows that he has something which - theoretically - should have some positive effect, and he's trying to get recognition for it, but I think it was only the journalist that went as far as claiming that it was a "cure".

a cure i.e remission  is a theoretical and practical possibility definitely in NIDDM and it is not inconceivable in the future that a cure can be found fot Type 1 as well. Since this is a new discovery it is right to be open-minded. There is promise in genetic modification and stem-cell treatments

Edolite could be mistaken for Edo Line- the Edo state transport coy.
Why not give it a name that at least sound more like a pharmaceutical product?
