Audi Q7 S-line 4,2 V8 FSI Versus Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI? by Nobody: 3:59pm On Dec 18, 2011
Hey everyone!

It's that time of year again, when I contemplate replacing my car with something larger. Family expansion demands I need a car with 7-seat option, preferably an SUV.

Between both models, which would you pick, and why? Please keep the choices limited to the SUV's here. I know there are others out there, but this thread is about the Audi Q7 S-Line 4,2 V8 FSI and the Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI.

This time, I'm looking at just two models, the Audi Q7 4,2 V8 FSI and the Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI. Both put out 350 bhp, though the Touareg R50 is diesel-powered, and has considerably more torque than the petrol-engined Q7. The most powerful Q7 is a 6,0 V12 TDI, which remains the worlds most powerful diesel engine, and the only V12 diesel fitted to a passenger car. But, it doesn't fit here, as the Touareg has no similar engine in terms of sheer power.

A bit of background on both SUV's:

The Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg are cousins, the Porsche Cayenne (mentioned here for reference only) is also related. All were a joint collaboration between the Volkswagen Group and Porsche. While the Touareg and Cayenne are pretty similar, sharing the basic bodyshell, including the doors. The Q7 however, was built on a lengthened and widened platform, placing it in the full-size luxury SUV class.

The Q7 4,2 V8 FSI is the largest petrol engined SUV from Audi. It does not differ visually from the 3,6 VR6-engined model. The sporty trim is the S-Line, which is just different suspension settings, and bigger wheels, plus some interior trim. Apart from the 4,2 badge, there's nothing to differentiate it from the 3,6 model. Bigger price-tag though!

The Volkswagen Touareg R50 is of course a 5,0 V10 TDI. It is based upon the regular Touareg V10 TDI, but here the similarities end. While the regular V10 TDI makes 313 bhp, the R50 makes 350, the same as the petrol-engined Audi Q7 4,2 V8 FSI. Externally, the R50 is different from lesser Touaregs. It has different bodywork, with a body kit and spoilers unique to the R50. Wheel arch flares, extended side skirts, deeper front and rear bumpers incorporation deep lower valances and grilles, different grille and larger exhaust tips. The alloy wheels are also unique to the R50, coming in at a whopping 22" all round.

Here are stats for both SUV's:

Audi Q7 S-Line 4,2 V8 FSI

Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI

Engine: 4,921 cc V10 2 x SOHC 20V.
Fuel type: Diesel.
Fuel delivery: Turbo Direct Injection.
Aspiration: Twin Turbo.

Torque: 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) @ 2000 rpm.
0-60 mph: 6,5 secs.

To aid your choices, I'm attaching some pictures. As much as possible, I've selected pictures of both SUV's from similar angles:

Audi wins for looks, luxury and style.

Since fuel economy is not an issue here, and Touareg's torque does not count on family hauler.

I know fully loaded they are same, but Audi has the brand name for luxury.

i guess this is just my own personal opinion, the R50 wins anyday!, looks, power, etc.
what may just set the audi apart is the horrible reliability of the touareg. A quick dash to any touareg forum
will tell u tales of disappointment e.g www.clubtouareg.com. However, i am yet to hear such about the q7.

But for me, the touareg's handling, exterior and interior looks etc is simply the bomb!.And the R50 is the comtemporary example of how a mid size SUV oughtta look. wink

^^^ I'm a member of that forum, Smooth. Sales of the Volkswagen Touareg in Europe are strong, that forum is a US-based portal, so sales figures will differ there.

The VW Touareg 5,0 V10 TDI was exported in limited numbers in North America, due to emmision laws. The R50 was never available in North America. smiley

^^
im assuming a touareg is still a touareg grin , R50 modded or not! so even if it didnt get to North America, im thinking one should still be sxpecting the erratic gear downshifts (just one of the many complaints), cosidering its still the same aisin tranny one will still get in the R50, and the unreliable electronics of the regular touareg would still be available in the R50, despite all of these, i'd still go for the touareg anyday!.

The devil you know (with his/her deficiencies) is still better than the angel (q7) u dont know wink
Re: Audi Q7 S-line 4,2 V8 FSI Versus Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI? by SMOOOTH(m): 8:44pm On Dec 18, 2011
Also , considering the deliverables, the R50 is d boss!. i mean , look at the torque on that thing, 'heard it towed a boeing!!! shocked. power offered by both is still same and the consumption, R50 still returns a combined 22mpg compared to the audi's 21 mpg, R50 anyday, on this note , if i could mod the regular 3.6l touareg to look like the R50 on the exterior, id rather do dat than to go for the v10 r50, V10 R50 sounds like a guzzler with dat mpg,
Re: Audi Q7 S-line 4,2 V8 FSI Versus Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI? by Nobody: 8:56pm On Dec 18, 2011
Same Aisin tranny on the R50, different ratios and software though. It'd need it - with that torque delivery. smiley

Back to the topic - keep the votes coming guys!

Q7 we go!
Firstly, the mpg difference between them is only marginal, especially seeing as we are comparing diesel against petrol
Secondly, I prefer natural aspirations, which rules out the Touareg(having only twin turbo, lol)
I also know about a few Touareg owners having temperamental auto tranny issues - not impressive
7 passengers sit comfortably in the Q7!
And then again, you are sure of Audi premium luxury,  need I say more!?  wink grin

^^^ Good mention of tranny issues in the Touareg.

More votes and opinions needed guys!

I for one vote for the Touareg simply because of size. I love big diesel engined cars for the torque. But I also read somewhere most likely in a mag about the stability of the Touareg at speed. (Stability in the sense that it needs lots of input to the steering because of the weight of that big diesel lump). I brought a 3.2 V6 for a family member 4 years ago and they are not bad SUV but I have never driven a Q7 though so cannot compare.

But since you're an engineer working on this cars shouldn't be an issue because I also hear when the turbo goes its a nightmare to fix.

I would love the V10 Phaeton though regardless. Sorry I know no cars just SUV but couldn't resist.
Re: Audi Q7 S-line 4,2 V8 FSI Versus Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI? by Nobody: 11:47pm On Dec 18, 2011
^^^ Replacing turbos on the Touareg R50 is an engine-out job. Handling on both the regular V10 and R50 is good. As long as the air-suspension is working as it should.
Re: Audi Q7 S-line 4,2 V8 FSI Versus Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI? by Nobody: 1:23pm On Dec 27, 2011
Replacing the pre-catalyst O2 sensors on an R50 / V10 TDI also requires engine and transmission removal, a massive undertaking. I've got a pair of pre-catalyst O2 sensors to replace second week of January, on a 2007 V10 TDI. The owner got a quote from Volkswagen that almost stopped her heart.

Still love the R50's, regardless.

well correct me if I'm wrong but the touareg doesn't have a 7 seater option, strike 1
Also the Audi being a premium brand cuts a better image, strike 2

Come resale time the Q7 will probably win out not withstanding the diesel in the VW, strike 3

Audi wins and a V12 Q7 is the daddy, go on you know you want to
Re: Audi Q7 S-line 4,2 V8 FSI Versus Volkswagen Touareg R50 5,0 V10 TDI? by Nobody: 4:12am On Dec 29, 2011
^^^ The Volkswagen Touareg does have a 7-seat option, the rearmost pair are removable to increase luggage space, if required.

The Q7 is pretty special - not as common as the Touareg, and exudes pure class.

The residual factor isn't part of my criteria in choosing a vehicle - if I like it, I'll buy, I'm not really concerned with what it'll be worth come time to sell.

The Audi Q7 6,0 V12 TDI is undoubtedly the pick of the range, with price being my drawback. Brand new with all options added, it's the thick end of £90,000. OTR price is actually £96,000 excluding road fund licence and licence plates. It's pretty special - the V12 TDI is special order only, no dealership here keeps them on their forecourts

Are you looking at buying new?

Still undecided. It'll either be brand new, or a 2-year-old pre-owned.

For the time being, Volkswagen Touareg R50.

I've got very little first hand acquaintance with any of the two, but going with the specs, for an expanding family, I'd go with the Audi Q7 if you wouldn't be doing much towing and extreme offroad.
