NEMA, Lawmaker Distribute Relief Materials To 600 Nsukka, Igbo-Eze South Flood Victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated over 2000 relief materials to flood victims in Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South federal constituency of Enugu state.

The agency brought the relief items following appeal by the member representing the federal constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta.

Hon. Obetta had during the the flood disaster that occurred in several parts of the federal constituency during this year's rainy season which displaced thousands of people in the communities, especially Alor-uno, Obukpa, Iheaka, Obimo, etc, moved a motion in the House of Representatives during plenary urging the federal government to come to the aid of the victims of the natural disaster.

NEMA official, Mr. Nnanyelugo Ezeani, who represented the South East zone Co-ordinator of the agency, Mrs Ngozi Echeazu in his speech to flag off distribution of the materials to beneficiaries at the Enugu Road, Nsukka, Nsukka local government constituency of of Hon. Obetta on Thursday said the relief materials were brought following an appeal to the federal government by the federal lawmaker to come to the aide of flood victims in his constituency.

Ezeani said, "I am here today at this flag off of relief items provided by the federal government for the internally displaced populations at the various communities of Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South federal constituency of Enugu state who were affected by the 2024 flood disaster.
"The distinguished Hon. Obetta Chidi at the peak of rainy season in the third quarter of this year officially requested for relief intervention for members of his constituency who were affected by flood disaster", the NEMA official stated further.

He said that following Hon Obetta's appeal an inspection team from their agency had visited the affected communities and after assessing the devastations, during which the team witnessed how people were displaced from their homes, domestic items, farms, and, economic crops destroyed had made recommendations for the agency's intervention to help the victims.

The NEMA official, however, advised leaders of communities in the area to sensitive their people against indulging in activities that promote flooding, especially blockage of drainage systems, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, etc.

The over 2000 relief materials distributed to the flood victims were 300 (25kg) bags of rice, 150 cartons of spaghetti, 30 cartons each of 5-litre( 4) vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomato paste(search×50), 300 pcs of nylon mats, 200 pcs of wax print (6 yards), pcs of guinea brocade (5 yards), 300 pcs each of women's, men's and children's cloth, as well as, 200 pcs of bath towels.

In his speech, Hon Obetta who is deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Budget and Research praised President Bola Tinubu, and, NEMA management for coming to the aid of the flood victims in his constituency.

He stated that over 5000 people in the constituency were affected by the natural disaster and urged the federal government for further intervention.

The Labour Party federal lawmaker also thanked the Enugu state government, Dr. Peter Mbah for allowing the state emergency management agency to assist in making sure the relief materials were brought to his constituency.

Some of the beneficiaries, including Mrs Ifunanya Okechukwu, a physically challenged Nnamdi Christian were full of praises of Hon Obetta for attracting the relief materials for them.

Mrs. Okechukwu said that the flood menace had been their yearly experience for several decades now, but, never a time had any past representative of their constituency attracted any help for them either from the state of federal government until this gesture from Hon. Obetta.
