Student Loan To Be Restricted To High-Demand Courses - NELFUND by Edygrin(m): 7:11am On Dec 23, 2024
The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disclosed that the free access provided by the Federal Government for all students for interest-free loans would soon be altered as certain courses are likely to be barred from taking the loan.

NELFUND Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, revealed this at the weekend while speaking at a virtual conference organised by The Renewed Hope Global titled ‘Student Loan Masterclass: Why, What, and How?’

He explained that the fund is looking forward to pursuing courses that align with the country’s needs rather than giving out loans to those seeking certificates in fields with limited job opportunities to repay their loans.

His words: “At the moment, all courses are treated the same because we are providing loans for people who are already in 300 and 400 levels. We don’t want to discriminate because some of them may be about to drop out. Having said that, there is recognition that there are some courses that Nigeria as a country needs people to have.

With no disrespect to anybody, language courses are less important to our national development than perhaps engineering or medical courses because they are more practical. And as a developing country, we do need skills and people to be educated to a level where they can develop the country.

That is not to say that we will not fund courses, for example, where people begin to have skills that are exportable; so, people may study in Nigeria and get skills that they can use to work in other places and remit funds back to Nigeria.

Sawyerr stated that so far, 335,000 students have benefited from the student loan initiative across 127 tertiary institutions.

In other words, the situation is as follows:

1.
Your capacity is almost exhausted. Selecting courses for the loan is obviously a strategy to drastically reduce the demand for the loan. You lack the boldness to disclose that you cannot afford to offer the loans to all the students who need it.

2.
Your assertion also implies that Nigerian universities get accreditation for useless courses, and admit people to study those courses. So, your government wants to discriminate against the students doing those courses rather than mandate NUC to scrap those courses.

3.
Your statement of "language courses" is vague until you mention the courses you refer to as language courses. List for us those courses that do not qualify for the loan.

forgiveness:
He mentioned language courses. Though I don't agree with him.
What are those language courses? Let him mention them or you should help him with that, so that we can see the rationality of his claim.

Also, try to explain to us how and why discriminating against the students doing those courses is better than mandating NUC to scrap those courses.

APC came to steal, kill and destroy. The idiots that celebrated the education loan as a major achievement should be bold enough to celebrate this. May every supporter of this devilish party suffer perpetually.

So we should spend scarce resources loaning to someone studying Korean and French when we have nuclear physics, drug design development or radiation technology ?

Fear APC and politicians.
After this, they will still come up with another way of condensing the number of students eligibility for the loan.

It will soon be about Grades

But you emphasised that he mentioned language courses. If that statement is not vague, help us to identify the language courses. You will not disagree with him if you do not know those courses he refers to as language courses.

It is you that is useless. In the US where they try to model the student loan after, they dont discrimate against any student or course.

So why are you now running the course at the institution of youre going to discriminate against them?

angry

If you Pose the question to batist, to state just one achievement or progress made by Tinubu, they will call you Ipob, Obidients or our neigbours from the East Igbo.

This is what the first class economic guru & those who claimed they are " educated" & sophisticated can give to Nigeria.

You started with propaganda lies & deceit & still believed in your own made up propaganda grin

If the " educated" & sophisticated " don't realise that you cannot make any meaningful progress if the process you grabbed is fraudulently flawed in the first place, they really have to be re- educated

The corruption & looting going on at the moment is enough reason to cut a 10 lane highway to looting to just 6 lanes.

To get foodstuff which is out of reach of most Nigerians, stampede must first occur.

This maladministration is evil, occultic, diabolic & extremely dangerous.

Whichever you prefer. Funds are not enough to fund every course. Essential courses in Engineering and Medicine first.

Idiots studying Islamic studies also want loans.cheesy Even idiots studying Library science and Clerking cheesy

Engineering, Technical courses and Medical aligned courses are prioritised for now under lean budget and lean resources. When economy improves we will start funding Christian Religious Studying and International Relations grin

Those who studied Chinese decades ago are benefiting a lot today. I know someone who is making a lot of money from been able to speak and write Chinese. Don't underestimate any course. I think every student should be given equal opportunity after all it is our common wealth as Nigerians and it's not free it is a loan.

Equal opportunity under lean resources ?

Do you give every staff in your company equal treatment under lean resources ?

Your national budget is below that of ordinary Texas. Much of which is still borrowed.

We should leave loan for Nuclear Physics students to loan people studying fertilisation in plants and book-keeping.
