I don't know what the issue is here - the person from Ryerson making commentary was only expressing concerns about the trains if used in their current condition.

Given the fact that the trains will be refurbished, the key questions here should not be whether they've been in use for 30 years or 2 years, the key question is how many safe, useful years do the refurbished trains still have?

What performance standard/lifespan has been requested from the refurbishing firm?

What is the cost/benefit analysis of older trains versus newer trains when operating and capital expenditure are considered?

All that seems to be going on here is emotional support or antipathy towards the project.

30 years old train from Canada is very good to use not only in Nigeria but anywhere in the world, 30 years old train technology is still new technology for us to start with, all what we need is continue maintenance.

Is there anything that can not be worked on to perform like new?

What's really the bases for your upside down logic.

Now you are complaining of fashola buying used train. You people were shouting when they started collecting toll at lekki ! NO PAIN NO GAIN ! lagos gov is'nt manufacturing money, lagos is barely managing is meagre allocation it get from the federal considering it status. And that is why lagos is'nt relenting in tax collection and others. Lagos deserve a special status as our representative are currently clamouring for at the national assembly.

You didn't include the story because it's all about the same lies and deception to prove your silly and baseless point.

I dare you post the link to the original story.

I don't think anyone is complaining about about him buying "used" trains, the focus has been on the life of the train. Train cars of that age has been phased due to structural, mechanical issues, etc. Refurbishing them will not add another 5/10years to it's life span, its cycle has been fully exhausted and they decommission them. The cost of its "overhead" will be more in the long run as opposed to purchase of newer or fairly used ones. If you have entered these types of trains before, you will know what I mean; from their braking system to AC system to entire system operation are serious issues. Well, I hope the refurbishing means "entire system overhaul" because Lagos will get what they bargained for.

As for the Lekki tolls, that is nothing but sheer GREED. From what I understand in the Lekki tolls, the present govt through a concessionaire  company, added an extra lane, and just tolled it. You do not toll "exorbitantly" an existing road, tolls are meant for large "newly built" project such as underground roads/tunnels, bridges, etc not an added extension YET there is viable alternate route.

Lagos isn't manufacturing money, TRUE THAT, but LASG is going about it the wrong way collecting taxes. LASG is definitely out of the line on these, after more than $1.5+ billion in debt (debt), and LASG hasn't still figured out to turn around Lagos other than usual harassment and thuggery, then, I pity Lagos residents.

I work on the Thameslink project and the whole project cost 5.5bn and this includes re-routing the rails building new and renewing old stations, resignalling the track from Brighton to Bedford through the city of London. plus 86 brand new 377 rolling stock

Now for Fashola to go and buy scrap metals that the Canadians are planning to recycle or upgrade for 2bn is a joke

Ok a train that has a 30 or 40 years life span and at the of its life span the Canadians says hey wait a minute lets sell it to the Nigerian government because they are mugs!!!

It seems like u love the art of arguing.

Ok, the 30 yr old trains are not used. They are new and I admit I dont know the difference bw refurbished and used. Thank you.

This is exactly the point I was making. I dont care if it is used, refurbished or made-in-china,,,,,, how much life is still in the train.
And besides, would he have gotten it cheaper?

It is not unusual for subway cars to be recycled. Seoul and Beijing cars have both had second lives in other cities.

Get your facts straight and curb your ignorance , Fashola or the Lagos state government did not buy any train, the concessionaire in charge of the project bought the trains, Fashola went to inspect the trains and what Lagosians are getting when it's all said and done

Private investors invest their money to make money, not to lose money. The wont base the return of their investment on junk. This is common sense,

And who cares what you worked on in the UK? Apples and oranges and different realities.

Where is the evidence that the 'scrap metals' are being bought for 2bn?

With financing led by Investec Plc, financiers of more than 25 rail projects around the globe, Eko Rail expects to invest about $400 million to equip the Lagos Blue Line, including construction of a dual-fuel electric power generating station, modern train control system, communications and power distribution, as well as depot and maintenance facilities. When the entire line is operational, Eko Rail expects to attract at least 300,000 passengers per day, with trains running every 5 minutes.

The Eko Rail consortium - led by Nigerian-based emerging markets investment firm Verod Capital - brings together a world-class team of manufacturers, technical advisors, metro operators and public private partnership experts from the UK, Canada and South Africa.

Isn't that a bold face lie when the topic itself and the posters in it are all talking about USED trains because it's junk, scrap and other silly rubbish they are spewing.

I wont even bother myself with the rest of your sermon, you are not a train engineer so your opinion is null and void.

Again, a used train car IS NOT a refurbished train car; a refurbished train car can be a used train though.

The train cars in question where purchased USED/ AS-IS condition. Eko Atlantic rail choosing afterwards to work on them DOES NOT change the facts of the purchase in anyway. lol

Yeah, it seems like a good move. I wish Lagos State luck cause this is going to make transportation of people and goods a heck more easier.

And the buying of the not used but refurbished trains also gets my vote. Let the management use that as a learning curve and to set up a model for mass transit system in Nigeria.

Well thanks to Professor Eko Ile, Dept of Literary studies , University of Nairaland, now I know. I am fully educated.

I will never make the mistake of referring to a refurbished item that has been used for 30 yrs as USED.

Tho the Professor seem not to be heeding his own advice (or lectures):

Oh, I know that already. If that was the lesson, then I demand my money back.

The lesson was this:

Never call a refurbished item that has been used oops sorry, in operation , for the past three decades as USED.

A refurbished item has never been used in any shape, form or manner. Forget its been in operation for 30 yrs and also forget about what this dude says (what does he know about vehicles)

Although half the cars are more than 30 years old, Ross is adamant they are perfectly safe and are only being decommissioned for capacity reasons. But he also admitted the TTC is not required to make sure the cars meet any safety standards before selling them.

“Once sold, it’s up to the new operator to ensure they are in good working order,” he said. “They do need to be maintained much more frequently than the new trains, simply because of their age. At some point they will run out their useful life.”
