I will tell you for free; they do. Those ones are paid so have to be professional. The average English speaker will tune out if they don’t understand your first three words.

They will understand once you speak clearly and audibly... Not necessarily because you are imitating their accent.

It is laughably unnecessary to lift your octaves or change your speaking pitch to match another.

Just communicate clearly and effectively.

Many of us Nigerians have serious self-esteem issues.

I think it is called diction Abi phonics.
Kids are thought that in primary schools these days. Infact they pay huge amounts to consulting diction/phonics teachers to visit the schools weekly.
If it is strange to you, then change the school your pikin de go. Lol

Sounds good in Nigeria ... but when abroad ...locals know off the bat you're faking it. It is the reason many celebrities speak in a " foreign accent" when home ... but drop it when abroad... people be looking at them sideways. Eg...one with "American accent" in the US. People in the South speak differently from those in the North and it is even further broken down locally....then here comes Mr American speaking all together. Imagine an American going to Nigeria with his Nigerian accent .... he starts to speak to you with a Hausa accent then drops the Yoruba accent and finishes off the sentence with Igbo accent..... would you really be listening to what he has to say?....or be saying to yourself who be this confused one? Mixed up priorities.

How will they communicate with "local" people?
Funny thing is that many of our children abroad still comfortably speak with the Nigerian accent even when they've learnt to speak with a foreign accent. Na inside Naija we come dey form.

We had English phonetics as a course years gone by...at least in my school. It was listed as Oral English by WAEC in those days and people sat for the exams at O levels. It didn't really drastically change our accents. Just that you learnt to pronounce English words properly.

Phonics help in spelling. If one doesn't know phonics....then he can't pronounce words nor spell. Eg.... one cannot write nor read pidgin if one doesn't know phonics.

How do you local people communicate with foreigners when they are among you? undecided

2. That mostly happens when they are among other Nigerians. The majority of the Nigerian kids in abroad schools instinctively modify their accents when among those who aren't Nigerians. and for good reason since they have realized the heavy accent makes communication tedious. undecided

The Chinese, Indians, Japanese, South Koreas, Russians and even Europeans do it too. No need to make a mountain out of nothing. undecided

1. Not so easy for the illiterate and semi literate people.

2. You're right. I remember that we had something fairly similar in my younger years (as I modified above in my post), but it didn't impact so heavily on the student's accents.

Rebuker:

You have a point, bro👍 but when you, as an Igbo man, speak Yoruba, your intention, aim, or joy is to be able to speak exactly like a Yoruba man. You wish to speak Yoruba in such a way that anyone who hears you will praise you for speaking it so well or even for trying to sound like a Yoruba person. No one will mock you; instead, they will be happy to see you speaking it. And since we adopt the language in the first place, trying to sound like the people we learn it from shouldn’t be a bad idea either.

Or should we just stick to speaking our local dialects and forget English? What do you think? 😁😁😁😁

context matters. A black American or white man in uk prefers you speak to them with your accent instead of fake i wanna ganna accent. You will look stupid. Those children look and sound stupid with that accent

1. Do the opinions of people who made such choices matter in most things in Nigeria?

2. Learning to speak in an accent that is more easily understandable is a step in the right direction for students in Nigeria; once they JAPA, they will mostly be forced to consider doing that anyway. After hearing your peers go, "huh," several times when you speak, nobody go tell you say you need to switch up your accent. undecided
