In continuation of efforts to restore environmental sanity across the metropolis, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI and in conjunction with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), on Thursday removed more than 650 illegal shanties and shops beneath the Idunmota Bridge to dislodge traders occupying the base of the structure to display wares for sale.

Speaking on the exercise, the Corps Marshal of the Agency, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), made this disclosure at the Agency’s Command Headquarters, Bolade-Oshodi. According to him, ‘‘The clearance operation with the code name #LetLagosBreathe undertaken by our operatives in collaboration with LAWMA ensured that we dislodged defiant traders erecting shops beneath the bridge which is hazardous to the integrity of the structure and capable of causing infernos’’.

Cole also mentioned that the clearance operation was activated to forestall a repeat of the Apongbon bridge incident, which pointed accusing fingers at traders that erected electrical installations and cooling systems under the Apongbon bridge, which caused the inferno.

The KAI Boss also warned traders in the habit of erecting illegal structures beneath other bridges to desist from the act, as defaulters will be made to face the full wrath of the law. He mentioned that the operation would be continuous.

The Corps Marshall also read the riot act to street traders to refrain from hawking in traffic and displaying wares for sale on road setbacks, lay-bys, medians, verges, kerbs and gutter slabs which is in stark violation of the State’s Environmental Laws. He enjoined transiting Lagosians to always embrace safety by using pedestrian bridges when crossing highways in the State.

Unfortunately claiming alone won't change much of the reckless looting that has made Lagos a glorified ghetto despite 60 times increase in revenue and budget since 1999, which is not matched by improved services and utilities.

Do you think that is because APC is filled with progreThieves rather than progressives like Awolowo and Jakande

Lawmaker scores Lagos Water Corporation low

A Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction at the performance of the state Water Corporation.

Fafunmi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), said in Ikeja that the corporation had not been able to justify statutory allocations to it.

The lawmaker, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1 at the assembly, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the corporation had the capacity to generate much fund internally through water rates but had relied solely on government funding because of poor performance.

'' Anyone that is using water will be willing to pay for it; the corporation has not been giving us water.

"Is there any new community that Water Corporation has given water? People depend on boreholes; even government estates have industrial boreholes.

"Why do we keep pumping money into an agency that does not give us the desired results?'' he asked.

He noted that the Adiyan Waterworks was located at Ifako-Ijaiye, where many of the residents had resorted to digging boreholes as a means of getting water.

''A lot of people are falling sick because they don't drink clean water.

''In the same compound, where you have sewage, is where you have a borehole.

''There is no way you can manage the sewage that it will not leak and pollute the water; everyone drinking such is drinking contaminated water,'' he said.

The lawmaker urged the corporation to increase water reticulation and supply to residents.

If the gov have provided the basic needs of the people we wouldn't be having this conversation. No affordable housing anywher, the gov left everything for us todo by oourselves. We buy land, build house, and also provides water by ourselve, Jesus!!

This is still an excuse for illegalities.....were they suppose to be there in the first place? If houses in Lagos is not affordable. Can't they move to any other states where accomodations is affordable?
Why would any sane person be building shanties anywhere?
No doubt the government aren't doing the necessary. By providing affording house . But how many housing units can the government provide ? Some don't have business living in Lagos .
Most of them will leave their village , without any plan or where to lay their heads . And start littering everywhere with shanties......and you expect the government to look away?

They need to be arrest . And dealt with.....
