Many people are not aware that we used to spend coins in Nigeria down to 0.5kobo which was our lowest denomination.

Interestingly, except for the penny, they ALL still remain official legal tender even though no one will collect it from you as they have become valueless.

It is funny that many of us here spent some of those previous coins but did not even see not to talk of spending the coin made in 2006 and we are here in 2025

not possible bro..nobody below 60 years can make this claim.
"After the establishment of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 1958, the CBN started issuing Nigeria's currency. First, the Nigerian pound, shillings and penny from 1958 to 1972 and then the Nigerian Naira and Kobo from 1973 onwards"

I doubt the penny is still legal tender in Nigeria.
I used all of it! I use to put a rope through my one penny together with my wooden slate and hang it on my neck when going to school in those days, hear in Jos. In 1969. I was 61/2 years old then.

As of 2006, Nigerians did not like to spend coins firstly because inflation had robbed the coins much of their purchasing power.

We mostly used the coins for payphones at NITEL

It's not in circulation....

That's to show you... That there is huge corruption in the system... How do you steal ₦100 billion in coins denomination?

But it's easier with ₦1000 bills.. or converted to dollars. ..

Reasons we continue to scream dollars on Nigeria soil because... Its easy to steal when u converted your stolen loots to foreign currency... Killing our Naira....

The coins ar not in circulation simply because they have lost their value.

Just imagine buying a sweet of N50 and holding 5000kobo.

5000 kobo is two hundred times more valuable than the sweet. I will rather melt it to extract the copper, zinc and other precious metals in it

penny is uk money

Welcome to colonisation. The pound, shilling and penny was Nigerian currency too until we went decimal with Naira and Kobo in '73.

The pound was the currency of Nigeria between 1907 and 1973. Until 1958, Nigeria used the British West African pound, after which it issued its own currency. The pound was subdivided into 20 shillings, each of 12 pence.

I remember using...

5,10,50 kobo coins. And the one naira coin. Not for long though, I think they were phasing out at the time.

I also remember when the 1 naira coin was changed to paper note.

I buy kulikuli, ojuku finger and hausa sweet that year.

Nigerians don't really like coins... I remember I used to reject them initially when I came to ghana until I later got used to them.

Now I kind of prefer them for the lower denomination currency!

Nooo! N1 and 50k were the first NOtes but changed to Coins later!

Half kobo(epini), 1kobo, 2 and half kobo, 5 kobo, 10kobo and 25 kobo were coins originally (1973)
Re: Which Of These Coins Did You Spend? by Phyde: 5:53pm On Feb 26
I swallowed some of these coins growing up as a kid. From 5 kobo upwards.

The language is English, how can the money belong to us. It was introduced by the British. It's not ours

You are speaking English. How can you be one of us? That said, your question has merit. Who said the money belonged to us when it was 'British money'?

The former African French colonies recently asked the same question and answered it with coups.

Erm, you do know the Nigerian penny was way before we emancipated ourselves and got independence, right?

Perhaps show you are not a mental slave and respond in your own language instead of English. It might make you credible to some extent.

Ignorance. Nothing like "Nigeria penny". We don't own the language, so we couldn't have coined the word "penny".

The British were here before the 19th century

You don't own the language you are communicating in neither, so should I call you non-Nigerian, or does it make a difference that you were born after independence?
