New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by Nobody: 12:57pm On Dec 30, 2011
Abuja — Worried that the spate of killings by Boko Haram is about portraying him as an extremely weak leader who can not be entrusted with protecting the lives of Nigerians and foreign nationals in the country, President Goodluck Jonathan is set to effect major changes in the nation's security network.

Information gathered from the Presidency indicates that virtually all the security chiefs would be asked to go home as their services would no longer be required.

Jonathan himself confirmed the development last Wednesday in the Presidential Villa while reacting to the charter of demand by the Christian Association of Nigeria, who blamed him and the nation's security chiefs of the incapable of securing Nigerians.

He had said: "We will restructure, we will re-adjust and make sure we get a team that will meet with the challenge we are facing today".

Daily Champion gathered from sources in the Villa that "the President is just tired of these killings. He knows that the Customs are not doing well enough to protect our borders. He knows that the Immigration is not doing enough to prevent unknown aliens from gaining access to our vast territory.

"He knows that the Police are not doing what is expected of them, likewise the Soldiers who have been seconded on internal security and so, he has been analysing all these things and will by the new year, take appropriate decisions, including massive reorganization, and would bring in people who would be ready to do what they are constitutionally expected to do.

"Apart from the State Security Service (SSS), which other arm of security do you think is doing any reasonable thing? Is it the ones who would release suspects kept in their care? Is it the ones who openly abuse their uniforms, cheating the public and even raping women all over the places? Is it the ones who have a duty to police the influx of contraband, yet it seems they are the ones who even courier these items themselves?

"I can tell you that Mr. President is disturbed by these events and especially the killings in the country. He is also disturbed that huge sums of money daily pass through the banks without the Intelligence Monitoring Units keeping a track on them. He knows that the Boko Haram have sponsors but, he is disappointed that the security chiefs are not taking any reasonable action to bring up cock-sure evidence against the suspected high-profile Nigerians who sponsor these people," the Presidency sources stated.

Even a casual trip to the Force Headquarters further reveals that they were expecting serious changes in the place, but the anxiety is the system over there is terribly bad already and would not be easy to rectify.

At the Defence headquarters, hushed tones were also discussing the fate of the top military brass, which it was said to have outlived their usefulness.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday ordered top security chiefs in the country to go after the main sponsors of Boko Haram.

The marching order was handed over to the service chiefs at the meeting he held with them at the Presidential villa, yesterday.

Although the meeting held behind closed doors, Daily Champion gathered that the President directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) and security chiefs in the country to embark on a thorough overhaul of the security operational strategies of the security agencies in dealing with the Boko Haram violence.

The President was said to have warned that government would no longer spare any security officer who fails to act promptly on any information concerning the activities of the terrorist group.

"Go after those involved in this heinous act. We must stop this Boko Haram madness," the president was said to have told the security chiefs.

It would be recalled that President Jonathan had last Wednesday told leaders of the Christian Association (CAN), led by Ayo Oritshejafor that he was contemplating an overhaul of the security apparatus in the country.

Both the Inspector General of Police Alhaji Hafiz Ringim and Oluseyi Petirin, Chief of Defence staff (CDS), confirmed to State House correspondents, after the meeting that the President Jonathan has taken decisive actions to restructure the security apparatus in the country.

He said the seriousness of the challenges formed the focus of the Thursday meeting adding that with the new strategy been put in place by the president, a lot of things will change in the coming days.

Hafiz Ringim, Inspector General of Police (IGP) told State House correspondents in a separate interview that President Jonathan's concerns about the security challenges in the country led to the emergency security meeting where the service chiefs and top security chiefs reviewed "the situation where we were, where we are now and where we need to be, that is what we discussed".

He said they are all worried with the spate of terrorism in the country saying: "Terrorism is everywhere all over the world particularly here in this country as you are aware it is a very new phenomenon here. We have not had this kind of thing before and we are just having it now so we are all scrambling to find our feet and face it squarely, that is what we are doing".

"Security agencies and most importantly Nigerian police have made a lot of gains which have not come to the fore. I want to seize this opportunity and talk to everyone of us to remain resolved and resolute to join in the fight against this cankerworm that will not leave anyone of us if we do not put our acts together. This is something that should galvanize us in our quest to remain together and also to bring down the scourge".

Give us state police.
Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by Afam4eva(m): 1:07pm On Dec 30, 2011
State police is a good idea but it may be used by state governors to oppress their political enemies.
Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by otokx(m): 1:12pm On Dec 30, 2011
The permanent solution is to secure our borders especially between us and Niger and Chad by building a barbed wire fence in the interim then a wall; also the issue of a database of all Nigerian nationals should be looked into the nearest future which brings us to the issue of National ID.
Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by Afam4eva(m): 1:14pm On Dec 30, 2011
Securing a country is very easy. Only if the government will embrace technology.

Securing a country is pretty hard actually. See the wahala the US goes through trying to keep illegal immigrants from Mexico out.

And that is just one example.

Then I suppose we'll be waiting the next thousand years for adequate security from the federal government.

A permanent solution is to split this dammmn nation. That is my permanent solution.
Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by Nobody: 1:54pm On Dec 30, 2011
If we can split the nation amicably , I am ALL for it, and that is the truth.

But if bloodshed will be involved, count me out.

Only the innocent and poor will die, the rich and very rich will survive with their families.

There should definitely be changes in the new year because the whole security organisation is not moving towards a similar interest.
Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by musiwa43: 3:48pm On Dec 30, 2011
what does service chief have to do with boko haram for God sake. instead of looking at why this people are bombing. jonathan goodluck,  is looking at the wrong thing, because he does not want to face the truth.

the previous service were removed for the same reason. and northerners did not stop bombing. does that not tell you, this is not the solution.

the satellite pictures are the reason why northerners are bombing, the problem is with  david mark and senators and others who are suppose to make change at the national assembly.

It is not the service chief responsibility to make change. It is the duty of david mark and senators . It is time we tell the truth.

What can the army chief do if he see satellite pictures and know why the people are bombing. he cant do anything to stop it. The only way to stop it is through altering the structure of Nigeria. you people blame sss, you blame the police, army etc, why not blame politician.

I think we must tell ourself the truth.

This is why i went to the international community and world leader asking for help,  Nigeria would not have gone this bad.

Good move if their successors will not start all over again but continue from the intelligence reports they already have. If not there will be a window of lacuna the terrorists will exploit. Ultimately an agenda for a peaceful split needs to be engineered.

Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by Nobody: 5:08pm On Dec 30, 2011
This president is clueless.
Instead of him to take action,he is announcing his intentions.
Everyone except him knows these terrorists will not be deter ed and may likely strike again around the New year.
Why continue to play Russian roulette with the lives of Nigerians.
All the security chiefs need to go including their management teams.
Fresh ideas are needed from young and intelligent officers.
The Customs have failed to prevent the importation of these dangerous weapons and their components.
Immigration has failed to prevent entry of illegal aliens that constitute most of the members of Boko haram.
The police have completely lost to battle These terrorists.
The armed forces are equally impotent against Boko Haram.
The SSS has failed to gather any intelligence on the activities of these sects.
The NSA is there because he is from the Presidents tribe.
Mr President act now and get rid of these people before they get rid of YOU!

I think a much better idea is to build a barbed wire fence around the three arms zone, then kill everybody inside. That'll solve all our problems.

i wonder why jonathan waited so long to do away with those confused set. However, it shows our rigid he is in his unrealistic self inductions. Although, we only blame the security forces, the type of warfare and tactics of boko haram is waging nearly defeated the american military in iraq until the americans bought over those bombers and anarchist with huge sums of money payable to those insurgents up till today just to be policing their base areas rather than to be attacking the americans. the only bombings u are seeing in iraq today are traceable to those who the americans are too ashamed to settle-the al-qeada.
Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by Nobody: 5:43pm On Dec 30, 2011
I do not believe that sacking the service chiefs is the way to go. Boko Haram is a very fragmented and amorphous group, thus using the conventional means (i.e. Police, army etc) will not solve the problem. Govt must make more use of intelligence. Deploy covert intelligence operatives to infiltrate the local communities, let them mix with the local population and discreetly obtain info as to the hideouts of this group. Then the army can launch co-ordinated simultaneous attacks on these hideouts and wipe out this threat once and for all.

But as long as govt continues to use its current heavy-handed military approach, I fear we may not easily overcome this threat.
Re: New Year Shocker Awaits Service Chiefs by OLASODE2K: 5:46pm On Dec 30, 2011
my advice to jonathan is to work on boko haram members in prison in to win them over with money. And this same tactic should be used to win over some those non extremist members whose value of intelligence cant even be prized from them with all our national budget. He can easily crush the extremists from goldmine trove of intelligence.

Win them over by reasoning and care of their immediate needs but never by raw cash.

The Niger and Chadian borders should be closed indefinitely. The President should appoint a counter terrorism adviser(an expert in dealing with terrorism). He should also establish a special department specialized in dealing with terrorism cos SSS and NIA are useless. He should immediately fire Aziza as d NSA and appoint somebody who actually has d intellect on how do deal with d security of d nation.
