In a nation where justice should be blind, the integrity of the judiciary is paramount. However, when the Chief Justice of Nigeria happens to be the mother of a convicted murderer, the justice system faces a significant ethical dilemma.

On Sep 5, 2015, the Daily Post reported that Abdul Adewale Kekere Ekun, son of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere Ekun was jailed for the murder of an 18 year old which took place in 2001. https://dailypost.ng/2015/09/05/london-based-nigerian-accused-of-murder-jailed-for-life/

A mother’s love is natural, and the pain of seeing one’s child condemned is undeniable. This could lead to two extreme outcomes—either an overwhelming sense of regret that might push for excessive rulings to prove impartiality, or a subtle inclination toward leniency, consciously or unconsciously shielding certain individuals from the full weight of the law.

Either way, justice is at risk. Can the judiciary truly remain impartial when its highest authority is emotionally and personally entangled in such a case of justice? Nigerians must reflect on whether this situation upholds or undermines confidence in the legal system. After all, justice should not only be done but must be seen to be done.
