Subsidy removal is in order. It has come to stay, the funds will be used for some other things instead of enriching few and providing cheap fuel to neighboring countries.

These protesters should go to BOKO HARAM dominated states in Nigeria to protest the killing of innocent lives by members of boko haram.

if you really really believe in that
pray what has happened to all the other public funds our great country has acquired over the years?!!

you should hide your head in shame, this shouldn't even be a debate.
If our leaders had one element of sense in them, fuel in Nigeria shouldn't even be an issue
but with every other thing in life depending on fuel it has now become the core of existence in my country

sure let them remove the fuel subsidy but only after the government has restored proper electricity, proper roads and stuff like they promised
then come get mouth remove subsidy ,but until then this is the total element of greed setting in

despite that the news has gone across the country, scenes shown on major tv stations and publishd by news papers, some hypocritic nairalanders still skip shouting its not true ot that it was some muslims who roited that killd d young man. Even if we see it like notin Gud has come frm d muslims due to Boka Haram attacks, does dat make dem so daft to atribute any slight violence to muslims. So would av even gone to d extent of saying the fuel subsidy removal was frm the muslims. Hike in price of transport/commodities from muslims.

Subsidy removal is in order. It has come to stay, the funds will be used for some other things instead of enriching few and providing cheap fuel to neighboring countries.

The tragedy of fuel subsidy removal is in the nature of our state system. You see, in a country like ours where the government does not provide the citizens with anything, fuel subsidy is the only existing social welfare. Removing this means the Nigerian government is officially doing nothing for Nigerians.

Think about it: as a Nigerian you generate your own electricity, you pay for your own hospital bills, you dig wells for your own water, you employ your own security, when you’re old you pay for your own care. The Nigerian state simple does nothing for the citizens, safe for subsidy on fuel.

Thus, the govt should stop seeing it as a subsidy and start to see it as the only thing they provide, since they can’t provide good roads, electricity, a trustworthy justice system, good education, security…

Tax on fuel is a brilliant way for any economy to make money; demand for the product is simply phenomenal, and largely price-inelastic! It means that removing subsidy in the case of Nigeria is a perfect way to save money. In some other countries that tax is spent on the people. But here we must be students of history and ask the simple question, did any of the regimes do anything for the people when they reduced fuel subsidy? If the answer comes back as NO, then why should we trust this government?

And, the argument that refineries would be built can only be supported by people who do not understand the laws of demand and supply and have no understanding of what makes good investment decisions. The fact is, there is an oversupply of refineries in the world and some governments are selling some of theirs. The big refineries being built now are state funded/supported projects – ie: subsidized. I don’t think, going by history, a kobo of the money saved would go towards building refineries.

And lastly, it’s easy to be in support of removing fuel subsidy, for whatever reasons, when your income is such that you would still be able to buy fuel at the new price and only your savings would be affected. Ie: your disposable income only would be affected and only that portion of it that you would normally put away. But imagine the effect of doubled food, transport prices on people who get by on $2 a day. These people make up the real Nigeria. They are more than you and I and they die on days that the government has declared a public holiday – they die because they live on what they earn on the day, and even at that they are constantly on the brink of death, especially in a country that wont offer them free medical care, shelter from the elements – no social welfare, basically.

The summary of my position: Fuel subsidy is the only for of social welfare / amenity provided by the government. Removing it means the government becomes officially redundant and deserving to be sacked.-LEYE ADENLE

If in the process of a peaceful protest, some charlatants capitalize on the rally to commit a crime, shouldnt the police gun down the miscreant if he/she resist arrest?!

I was watching and heard stories of how the protesters in Lagos were stopping people on their way to work and in busses and forcing them against their wish to participate in the protest. When such things happen, then it is no longer a peaceful protest but a case of public disorder and the police reserve the right to use any means necessary within reasonable limits to dispearse the crowd including live ammunitions. Protests/rallys like this always attract unscrupulous elements who use it as a means to loot and intimidate people.

If this guy commited a crime in the name of subsidy protest, then the police reserve the right to gun the fool down. Now in heaven he can buy fuel for 1 Naira per liter.

God bless Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan and Alusi Okija.  cool

Nna na wa 2 you o,where is your sense of empathy? Do you even know what happened? Like we don't know how blood thirsty the NPF is, there's no sense in gunning down an unarmed person. In as much as you are a juju,I think you should use your head when reasoning.
Re: A Protester Killed By Police In Ilorin by Okijajuju1(m): 10:03am On Jan 04, 2012
Mr. Koko

Carry your frustration look far jor!!  angry

You smoke stupidity this morning abi your yansh dey leak blood?!  angry

You think because you have access to the internet gives you the right to talk nonsense.

A policeman has the right to use any means necessary to put down any criminal behavior. In a crowd/mob, is were you want him to effect an arrest?!  angry Morons like you didnt even bother to find out the circumstances surrounding his death, all of you umemployed touts started shouting Jonathan has killed an innocent Nigerian.

It is one thing to stand against the removal of subsidy, infact it is your fundamental human right to speak out against whatever you feel is wrong, but foolishness has no place in the constitution. How come it is only him out of the millions who protested that got shot?! Did you find out or in your haste to get awoof fuel you forgot your brains at home?!  angry How did you know he was unarmed?! Or dont you know that even weilding a stick is considered being armed?!  angry

When next you and your lot go out on these protests, you had better properly organise yourselves in order to avoid criminal elements hijacking your rally and using it to cause mayhem. What is supposed to be peaceful demonstration can be hijacked by just one criminal.

And rumours have it that the guy wasnt killed by a gunshot but by a knife stab. So tell me if it was the police that stabbed him?!  angry

Nne. I have empathy.

Tensions are high, people are angry and alot of the people in these rallies are criminal elements. If in the process of a rally, a crime is being comitted, the police has the right to quel the situation.

All I am saying is before spitting vile and venom at President Jonathan, logically analyse the situation and find out why of all the places, of all the protesters (millions of them), it is this one guy that got shot abi stabbed. Answer me that and let me know. The police are trigger happy no doubt, but they still need a reason to merk you.
