Android phone users will soon be able to "ping" their buddies on BBM if the following story is anything to go by.

SCREENSHOTS have surfaced of the Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry Messenger (BBM) app running on Google's Android operating system.
The images are the first real signs that BMM will become available for Android users. The app is in beta testing currently but RIM will launch it by the end of the year, according to Techradar .
A BBM icon can be seen on the Android menu and a contact profile page shows details such as the user's display name, PIN, personal message and status. The images supposedly came from a RIM employee who said the app works well with Android's push notifications.
This is about all the information given away by the screenshots but we assume that the system will be compatible with Blackberry users. It is unclear whether BBM for Android will include BBM Music, which allows users to share music libraries with each other.
Another possibility is a version of the Blackberry Messenger app for Apple devices. The fruit themed firm might not be so keen on the idea because it has Imessage, a messaging application that will come with IOS5.

but this would prolly spell the end for RIM's market share, b ut then i guess the app will not be free, so licensing may still fetch them money

RIM is loosing market share everyday, two of its founding members recently resigned because of this. BBM is the most lucrative feature of Blackberry so why not push the application to the two leading smartphone OSs? Makes perfect sense to me.
I suspect the application will be free to download, but would require some sort of monthly subscription to remain connected. The mobile networks will then have to pay a small fee for all android bbm apps activated through their networks to RIM.

Its still in development and nothing concrete about it till mid this year; and even then no beta to be released

Those photos have been on the net for a while now.
It might not be very soon but it will happen eventually since most BB owners still install other instant messaging apps like Whatsapp and liveprofile to stay in touch with friends across the other platforms.
Considering that RIM has room to make a lot of money to make if they can provide the BBM service to other platforms on say a monthly payment plan, I don't see why it wouldn't happen.
It also saves them the cost of hardware R&D since they'd only have to come up with compatible software for Android and IOS operating systems.
