Goodluck Jonathan: Nigeria's Embattled President (cnn Special) by Depilot(m): 2:53am On Jan 25, 2012
(CNN) -- He is the son of a canoe-carver, a mild-mannered academic who wears a fedora but eschews the flowing robes and bombastic brashness that often characterize Africa's "Big Man" leaders.

When elected president in April 2011, he was described as "Nigeria's Obama," a leader who would bring change to the oil-rich but poverty-ridden nation.

His countrymen believed a divine hand orchestrated his success. After all, his name spoke of his destiny: Goodluck Jonathan.

Now, just nine months after his election, Jonathan is an embattled leader whose popularity has plummeted. A Christian from southern Nigeria, he faces the challenges of growing sectarian violence and angry citizens who took to the streets in recent weeks, carrying mock coffins and placards calling him "President Badluck."

Majority of Nigerians now agree that electing Goodluck Jonathan was a mistake. The recent protests brought about by his poorly thought subsidy removal proves just how sad they are. But should mistakes be without reasonable remedy? I fail to see why Nigerians should let an incompetent regime remain four full years in the guise of patience.

I propose a system where after two years, a referendum on any regime be held by an Electoral College. They will decide whether or not a govt should remain or continue. And where they say return, they will also proceed to electing another cabinet to finish the tenure.

The white bastards should not cash in on our present situation and utter unwholesome statements. We must surely come off clean since we are paying today the price of our better Nigeria tomorrow. Nothing good comes easily. History teaches us that every country we now make reference to as a symbol of good governance had their own trouble times in one way or the other. Just like every other ills, corruption will fade away from Nigeria. Who believes me?

I totally agree with the CNN assessment of the President. I have always had the premonition that Jonathan is not saviour that Nigeria needs that is why I did not vote for him.

All those criticicing and condemning GEJ will soon eat their words by the time he ends up delivering his promises to 9ja. Initially people must condemn u. Its a sign of greatness. Even Michael Jordan was described as "not good enough" in college! But guess who is the greatest Bball player ever.

Time will tell. ALl we need to do is lend support to GEJ admin instead of criticizing AND DOING NOTHING as we have always done

I don't get it. People just keep pointing at the president forgetting that there is an entire chain which includes state governors, legislators, council chairmen etc. Do they think the president is some sort of emperor?
Re: Goodluck Jonathan: Nigeria's Embattled President (cnn Special) by swiftycool(m): 1:54pm On Jan 25, 2012
"Oil rich BUT poverty ridden" only Nigeria in this world perfectly qualifies for this description. It can only happen in nations where being in Government guarantees more ridiculous fortunes than earning a honest living through hard work. Thanks to our leaders we hav come to realise that spending a billion on feeding just two dullards in Govt and their families in a year is more important than making life comfortable 4 communities of hardworking people unfortunate not to be part of d said government

According to GEJ don't despair, just wait till u can join the Govt. and ull make it. Hardwork doesn't really pay

You mean 168 million people are just too dumb to solve their own problems that they now have to rely on Americans and CNN journalists to give them solutions via articles, because it is their duty? Okay. undecided
