Automatic Transmission Mechanic Needed In Abuja by Nobody: 8:38am On Feb 05, 2012
Pls can someone direct me to an automatic transmission mechanic in abuja,my transmission is leaking its fluid. We checked the plate under the gear and resealed it but it still flows out.I was later told the oil seal is bad and would need to bring out the whole engine b4 the transmisson leakage can be sealed.Took it to a comp and was told they dont repair gearboxes but i shud buy a new one and they will fix it .but a third mechanic told me the gearbox can be removed from underneath the engine without removing the whole engine.i drive a passat 4wd v6 2001 americam spec.Pls i need help.the car is in the house doing nothing.

^^^ I can talk you through what needs to be done.

Your 2001 Volkswagen Passat 2,8 V6 30V 4Motion runs the ZF5HP19-a 5-speed tiptronic. Oil pan removal does NOT require engine removal, so whoever said so is either a blatant liar, or doesn't know one end of a spanner from the other.

For starters, how does the car drive, are the shifts smooth or jerky? Can you smell burning fluid in the car when the engine's hot? Lastly, the display on the dash (digital display between rev counter and speedo shows what gear you've selected in red. Does it show what gear you're in, or do all sectors (PRNDS / PRND432) all illuminate at the same time?

One issue I'm not too clear on Bjims, you say you "resealed" the plate under the transmission. How exactly did you do that?
Re: Automatic Transmission Mechanic Needed In Abuja by Nobody: 1:13pm On Feb 05, 2012
on my way to the airport to pick my wife on Thursday , i saw smoke and initially i thot my car was on fire. i parked and picked up the extinguisher and after abt 20 mins the smoke died down . i saw oil over the ground and called my mech who told me it was the gear oil and we took it to his shop. the initial diagnosis was that the plate under the transmission was leaking oil .it was removed and resealed with a black grease to confirm if it was not there the leak was coming from.We added gear oil again and by the time i moved the car all the oil had poured out.I was later told that the leak was btw the engine and the gear system and that the oil seal towards the transmission was faulty and that i will need to change it. the mech told me he can fix it but would need to bring out the engine b4 he can access the gear system,i went for a second opinion at a motor company and i was told they dnt fix gear systems but only replace them.I went for a third opinion and was told by another mech that he could remove the gear system without removing the engine,

i used to smell burning oil and i went to scan it.It gave two codes which i chkd on net to be a problem with the oxygen sensors.i bought two new ones yet the problem persisted with the chk engine light still on.When u select it actually shows the selected drive but since it began the oil leak all of a sudden it will show all the drive at once and wont move.when i put it to neutral and take it back to drive it will normalize itself and move only to do it again
Re: Automatic Transmission Mechanic Needed In Abuja by Nobody: 1:26pm On Feb 05, 2012
Never use anything other than a genuine Audi / Volkswagen seal to seal the transmission oil pan.

If the leak is from between the transmission and engine, then it means you've got a worn torque converter oil seal. And unfortunately, replacement does entail removal of the engine or transmission.

It's worth bearing in mind the ZF5HP19 tranny uses two fluids, which are entire seperate. The gearbox side of things requires genuine Audi / Volkswagen ATF, or ZF Lifeguard 6. Anything else will destroy your tranny in a very short time. The other fluid is gear oil, the same as used in your rear axle.

Some questions:

01) What fluid did your mechanic add?
02) Where did he add it from? It's very important I know this.
03) The gear shift display on your dash - is it showing individual gear selected, or is the display (PRNDS / PRND432) all illuminated in red?
04) Are the gear shifts smooth, or do they engage jerkily?
05) Do the gears change on time, or does the engine rev quite high before the changes take place?

Ideally, you need to have your transmission scanned for fault codes. If you find any codes, please don't clear them, until you've at least written them down, I'll need to see them, and their definitions if possible.

Wow. You never mentioned you have an engine check light on. The engine check light is a seperate issue. Do you have the two codes you pulled when you had the engine management scanned?

You need a transmission scan. This is different from scanning the engine. It uses the same OBD II port, depending on the scanner used, you can select engine, transmission, ABS, airbag climate control etc. You need to select Transmission.

Bingo!

You have more than a leak issue. When the gearshift display all lights up in red, your transmission is in limp mode. The red display all illuminated is the transmission's equivalent of a check engine light. Each time you switch off and restart, it appears to clear. Shifting from P to R or D will bring the red display back.

Did this display start before, or after the transmission was "resealed" and fluid added?
Re: Automatic Transmission Mechanic Needed In Abuja by Nobody: 1:41pm On Feb 05, 2012
he added an atf , a cheap one just to confirm if it will leak after he had resealed the plate under the gear system.I was actually to remove it and add mobil atf it was discoverd that the seal did the trick. He added the oil from somewhere under the car not to far from the front left wheel.the gear shift shows the individual gear selected but when it move for a while it will stop and show all the gear selection at the same time.when i put off the engine or put it in neutral and take i back to drive it begins to work normally again only for it to behave like that all over again.the gear shift are smooth and it does not rev b4 changing gear but i noticed at times the car jerks violently once in a while.initially i thot a caliper at the back left tire was the culprit.we changed it yet it continued but on very high speeds it does not jerk. I will get the codes i got at the last scan for u as sn as i can find it in my sys

there are more mechanics who are good with automatic gear box for passat/german cars in lagos than in abj plus they are also affordable.

the display issues showed once last month when i was trying to climb a small embankment,my car got stuck and it revved.I put of the car,put it on and reversed and it cleared and never showed it again. It began to show after i had resealed and added the transmission fluid.presently there is no fluid in the gear sys.

You can't add just any old ATF, even for leak testing purposes.  shocked

The filler for the gear oil (differential) is accessed from underneath just behind the right-hand front wheel.

The filler for the AFT (transmission) is accessed underneath the oil pan. It's the large bung, there's also one for draining. The only way to get the ATF in is via a pump, with a J-shaped pipe on the end of the hose. The ATF temperature also has to be measured before the correct fluid level is reached, and the car must be 100% level.

If the correct procedure is not used for refil, your trans will go into limp mode. And if you continue driving it, you will destroy it beyond ecomomic repair. Because you're used the wrong fluid, the entire trans will need to be drained, and flushed with the correct ATF. It takes approximately 9 litres, though you'll seldom get that amount in, as the torque converter can't really be drained dry unless the transmission is removed. So you'll need at least 10 litres - 1,5 for flushing through, and the rest for refill.

Actually it's easier and quicker to remove the engine and transmission, complete with subframe. The engine harness can be left on the engine, and disconnected in the ECU box (five connectors).  It'll take about 45 minutes to pull the engine and tranny.

Any decent Volkswagen franchise will be able to work on your car. It's only when you decide to go the El Cheapo route your car could be wrecked.

This is the DIS (Driver Information System) showing a healthy auto transmission:

And the same showing an auto transmission in limp mode:

I can offer you remote assistance, but as I stated, I'll need the fault codes from your transmission, and if possible their definitions. So you need to get it scanned, I can't assist you otherwise.

I understand their business model, you have to understand that you should never have to work on any 2010 car because its still new, just change oil. That means they can't do it.

If I may suggest take a pic from under the car showing where the oil is leaking Siena will tell you exactly what your mechanic has to do. Type of seals, part # and tips

The reason is simple: Investing time and money in learning the intricacies of a rebuild on an auto tranny is expensive. To recoup the expense from training, your mechanic will pass that cost to you, the customer, and rightly so. The cost of rebuilding your auto trans can easily outweigh the value of your car. Even if that cost was halved, I doubt you'd want to pay fair money for a job well done.

And it's not just non-franchised dealerships. Most dealerships outsource the repairs of auto transmission to specialists. A decent transmission specialist seldom does any other repairs on a vehicle, preferring to stick within their field of expertise. A dealership will rather replace your transmission with a reconditioned one, taking your old unit in exchange, which will be rebuilt at a later date and fitted to someone else's vehicle. It saves time and money.

I am fairly proficient with the working of the ZF transmission, not because I went on a course, but because I was interested enough to strip down broken units, find out what went wrong, with the help of the web to do my own research.

Re: Automatic Transmission Mechanic Needed In Abuja by Nobody: 6:45pm On Feb 05, 2012
Picture number 1 is enough to conclude the ATF leak is coming from the torque converter seal. Replacement entails removing either the engine, or transmission.

I would advice the torque converter is thoroughly drained of contaminated ATF while the transmission is off the car. And I would also advice you get a new oil pan seal, ATF filter and O-ring before it all goes back together.

The ZF transmission is very sensitive to ATF grade, and will not tolerate an incorrect grade. Even 600 ml in the 9 litres it holds is enough to make your tranny go gaga.

Bro, I don't mean to be harsh here - but why would you continue driving your car with a Check Engine Light, and an obvious ABS fault? Putting it bluntly, you're killing your car. The fact it still drives (kind of) doesn't mean warning lights should be ignored.

Get your codes first, then we'll see what we can do, with regards to getting your tranny pulled.

As per Mobil ATF, I've already given you details on the correct fluid.

a) Genuine Audi / Volkswagen ATF. The grade depends upon the build date, so that means goin by the VIN.

b) ZF Lifeguard 6.

If you can't get these in Nigeria, then you'll have to import from the UK or the US.
