I have this 98 toyota corrola that i have been using for the last 4 yrs. It developed a transmission (jerking) problem last year but was repaired by a mechanic who claimed it was the valve body that was bad. After repair, it was okay and my husband had travelled from Lagos to Benin with the car without qualms. Five months after repair, it started with delaying enagement each time i want to move in the morning, like one second until i got stuck on the road one day. I had to tow the car home. My problem now is that i want to change the gear box because it is obvious that 'repair' will only last me for sometime but many people say that once you change the gear box, the transmission system can never be 'smooth' as before. Please how true is this. I love this car, as a lady because it is easy to maintain. Though, my husband said that i should sell it with the transmission fault that he will add 300k so that i can get the Tokunbo of same car but i think that is like a waste when i can replace the transmission with less than 80k. Please advise me, please!!!

firstly, i want say that many car users has bad maintenance culture for gear transmission, forgetting the fact that it plays a very important role in the car's movement. You don't have to wait till its bad before you top-up the oil and other little maintenance
to your question, you can change the gear transmission and you will not have a single problem. But make sure that you replace with exact type you're removing from there.
Where people always have problem is when they try to change manual transmission to automatic or vice-versa. this involves some working and may not go well with the car.
Also, make sure you are dealing with a trusted mechanic.
Finally, I want to suggest that if your husband insist on selling the car, pls go ahead and sell it. Afterall, he want to add up and give you a new car.
Goodluck in whatever decision you make.

Hi Ndidi,
I have not really change a gear box before, but some of my collegues have. It is certain that you can conveniently replace your gear box if done by an experienced mechanic. Also, you need an honest & experinced mechanic to be able to select a good gearbox from the market. From the experinces of my colleagues, it's perfect when properly fixed. More importantly, it a lot cheaper for you to replace it than buy another car. Provided you car is in good state, I strongly, advise you replace the gearbox rather than change the car.

I donot know your location, but ask around, people will direct you to a good one. I read on Naira Land about LTV 8 compound, I donot know where it is but I want to presume it is in Lagos. If you live in Lagos, there are good * experienced mechanics that can do that.

Good luck.

I have had gearbox problem with a couple of cars. A honda Accord 95 (Academy) and a CRV 2004. I changed the gearbox for the academy. It developed fault less than 3 months after. The mechanics (not 1) confirmed it was a good and perfect match of the former gearbox. Another set of mechanics changed the gearbox again. I gave it to this set because they worked on the gearbox of the CRV so perfectly, that you hardly know there has ever been a problem. But I never enjoyed the car (Academy) again. I loved that car. I gave it out. But the man using it now has been enjoying that car.
For the CRV, I did not change the gearbox, the mechanics worked it. I paid them 70k instead of the 170k that was required to change it. It works fine as ever. I live in Abuja.

CONCLUSION: If I use a car for 3 years (OR the age of the car is greater than or equal to 15) and it starts giving gearbox issues, no matter how much I love the car, I will give it away. You may end up spending more than you envisage.

It is imperative you go with your mechanic to the market to be sure he buys it and simply not just go get one from God knows where.

Most transmission problems come about as a result of use of wrong transmission oil,I will advise you to tow the car to ladipo market if you stay in Lagos and then get the gearbox seller to use his own trusted mechanic to fix the one he wants to sell to you and then you test the vehicle,if you are happy with the performance you pay if not they remove it.
I am an autodialer and that's how I did the several vehicles I ve changed their gearboxEs

I believe a very good mechanic can fix it.If you are in Lagos, you can visit any of the mechanics in the mechanic village along Agindingbi road (by 1st avenue),but if you resolve to selling it,I'll be interested to buy. You can contact me on o8180687227.

1.I changed d gear box of my 98 model CRV last month and it's very ok. I went to Ladipo mkt with my mechanic. (Infact d change is from 4WD to 2WD-propeller removed). I did this bcs of d price- 4Wd N150,000, 2WD- N70,000. 2. B4 d change, I spent N35,000 to repair d old gear box; used it for 3 months but it suddenly stopped on the road one day refusing to move "autopsy" confirmed GBox "dead".3. My advise is please buy another box instead of repairs no mater wt. 4. Fix the GBox b4 selling d car
