Seun, it is never too late to revert or at least restore the old forum till this is fixed up. Many NLders will have that you retain the old forum style and improve functionality. Look at Facebook, twitter etc even astalavista, what will happen if the guys there decide to change the outlook completely, disaster i tell you for their finances. They will only optimize the old system and not carry out a wholesome change as you've done; even if you want to move it to the next level as you say here, you should consider the users who have made the Nairaland what it is today. A word is enough o.

NAIRALAND IS NOW A NAIJA REFINERY WHICH IS NOT WORKING AT AN OPTIMA CAPACITY shocked
Re: New Nairaland: State Of The Forum by Seun(m): 11:15am On Mar 12, 2012
We cannot revert to the old forum. It uses a completely different database, which is incompatible with the version we switched to. It's technically very hard to do and it would result in an inferior mobile experience. Our only option is to continue to keep tweaking this one until it looks right.

this new NL looks to be a downgrade. why did seun have to get rid of the table format which was much more organized than what we have now? with the old one, the fields like original-poster, number of views, last poster where very easy to find because each field was in same line with other users, now it seems you have to specifically search them out on row by row basis.

secondly, seun has removed or renamed the updated topics page. its replacement(followed) does not show any update indicator, so you can't tell from a quick glance if there's been a new post on that thread until you pain-stakingly go into the thread.

Also why has seun removed the number of posts(post count) feature?

1stCitizen: Programming? Since when customizing SMF(Simple Machines) turn to programming, bros? Anyway kudos for taking the risk to change that obsolete site. I have faith you will do it right after a few hiccups.

That depends on what you think programming is: It take a programmer to fiddle with any script (customizing or not)
Re: New Nairaland: State Of The Forum by Nobody: 11:21am On Mar 12, 2012
Hi seun, u are doing a great job with this new switch over. But please i want u to consider changing the background color from white to another less bright color, what u have now is damn too bright and affecting my eyes, and am sure a large number of users will agree with me on this. All other modifications are ok by me, but the color, pls change it.
Regards.

Get the problem fixed and stop all these state of the forum crap.I have told you if you are broke to create this new one,let members contribute so nl can come alive again. This is just too boring and frustrating.

You fukced up big time, just what were you thinking?so you expect us to keep using this one and prolly go blind before you complete whatever it is you have in stock and please whatever you are planning i beg you to arrange threads in tabular formula like it is on the real NL,seriously our opinions matter and we need to be heard, preparing us for the change by notifying us about it wouldn't have hurt, now you are forcing this one down our throats, bros e no pure o,NL means a lot to many of us no because of am think say we go die if we stop to come here,I still dey vex.

Seun don't pls run this bizness with ijebu or igbo sense as they say. you may mean well but if its not working one way, try other options, one must work ; dont be bent on using this one size fits all approach even when you're innundated with free and constructive ideas of way forward. It vexes me when I open this page to read up and am greeted with a comparatively bland insipid site. honestly, whatever idea made you drive your customers to your competitors shops and encourage them to actively seek alternatives which they' ll definitely find?brand loyalty can only last that much. Please in the name of Jesus I beg you to apply wisdom...and some more wisdom.

Its too bright and too scattered. Geez.

You seem to have complicated a very simple and user-friendly format! A format that attracted a lot of people in the first place!

Very uninspiring to search through topics as everything is clogged up and posting seem to be getting more futile!

What is the point of this change anyway?

To attract more viewers or to piss-off the ones you already have? undecided

dripstoil: Seun,

I'd have to be honest with you. I couldn't belief that after all these years on the Internet
with a platform as huge as Nairaland, that you're still a "Greenhorn"

1. Software developments go through developmental circules and not just a one off with a friend.

2. Many users here talk about the "Interface" but I can tell you the "Backend" is nothing to write home about.

3. You need more than you and your partner for a project like this. You need Team of Developers complete with project managers!

4. Your software will go through circles and tested against bugs in every circle even before it gets to BETA.

5. The size of nairaland, you need Fulltime Team of Developers and software Engineers fully paid and maintained.

6. If you know you can't do all these, then go for vendors (You think vBullentin are fools for the work they've been doing over the years?)
Thats what you wanted to do over night with a friend.

7. There is nothing like few mistakes when your brain is switched off, There are millions of bugs in here.

I'm currently ebarking of a project to develop new SN and over 20 full in-house developers are currently working on it for the past three months,
that's what it takes to go custom.

8. 40% loss is understatement, don't be surprised with 80% traffics and revenue loss!!!

Just my opinion

God bless you eternally. i was so annoyed when i couldn't login to seun"s nairaland this morning. Oga Seun, you are only killing nairaland's uniqueness. Even facebook, twitter, myspace, . . . didn't effect this kind of change. Your 'customers' have spoken. I rest my case

What was the rush about? You spent too short a time beta-testing this new forum. Compared to the older one the user experience sucks. I can see where you are going with this but you should have spent more time ironing out the kinks before full time deployment. Things that will improve the user experience:

1. I like to see the "Updated" topics functionality from the old forum restored. The "Followed" link just doesn't cut it. After viewing an updated topic on the old forum it removes itself from the list of updated topics until a new post is made. The list of followed topics here just displays everything. Not tidy at all!

2. I 'd like to see the time and date of a contributor's post and not just this rather generic "xyz hours".

P.S. I like the "Unfollow" function.

Seun: Dear Nairalanders,

I have to apologize about the intermittent errors we've been experiencing since we switched to the New Nairaland script. When making the switch, my estimate was that we would lose about 20% of our traffic on the short term, and hopefully gain all it back in a month or so, and I was prepared to take that risk.

However, I never expected that we'd have issues with site uptime as a result of the switch. Most of the issues have been as a result of bugs pushed by me in the middle of the night when my faculties were not working optimally. I think we'd be lucky not to lose 40% or more of our traffic if this keeps happening.

I hereby apologize to Nairalanders for these errors of mine. I want to assure you that my programming partner and I are doing our best to deliver a world class "New Nairaland" experience to you. Our ultimate goal is to make New Nairaland better than Old Nairaland, in every way, within a month.

Thanks a million for your understanding.
Why were you acting like a bully before? So you can present things this way instead of banning us because we were telling you our mind. Go and sin no more. We will support you. Just let us know what you want.

Seun, Nairaland is your vision and no one, I mean no one including me can tell you what to do with it.

IMO, I think we are kinda used to the old Nairaland and as such, this new one is looking kinda strange and unfriendly. But I do believe we'll get used to it over time and may even come to appreciate it better. Nobody tells Zuckerberg what to or not to do about FB. Lets give Seun the props, I believe he is getting on to something that we will all eventually like better.

Seun, Please keep the fire burning.

Guys, accept this crap or get out abeg. I am tired of the noise. Same people making same noise.

Yes, we know! This project falls below "Version 1" of any web application developed in 2011/2012. If it was anything to go buy, the "programmers" that did it woulda been paraded on a thread on the homepage.

If you have no faith in it just get out and come back later and see if its better, if its not. . . give seun 400 USD to purchase vBulletin.

Guys just stop the noise abeg, everywhere na the same noise.

And someone was seriously arguing somewhere that seun was a programmer, I wasted 30 seconds of my life answering the guy when we coulda just waited for the ultimate answer right here. tongue

Oya no more noise, anybody wey make noise again I ban am. . . I'm serious, this is a fertile ground for my shells and scripts and I will ban you if you worry seun again! grin

Read this (the link below) over and over again and then come back and see if you made any sense with the above statement or with your non-backward compatible "upgrade".

Seun, even though I don't have any issues with this new interface, at least for the fact that people are fuming, try reverting to the old one and change things gradually. People are naturally resistant to gradual changes; how much more drastic ones like this?
