According to a statement released by MTN Uganda
on Wednesday, the company has reported its first
case of mobile money fraud costing billions of
shillings. Ugandan police have began
investigations into how the transactions were
made, including the loopholes which could have
allowed criminals to use the service to steal from
users and telecom operators. The police say
employees running the mobile money service
could be involved in the scam.

13th March

Mr Anthony Katamba, the MTN general manager for Corporate Services, while clarifying on the Daily Monitor story that yesterday erroneously quoted Shs19billion instead of Shs19 million—the amount that the telecom giant has allowed to pay URA.
Note: There's a rift between URA(Uganda Revenue Authority) and the MTN.

Telecommunications giant MTN Uganda insists it will not pay the Shs136 billion tax liability, including the Shs19million penalty slapped on them by Uganda Revenue Authority in tax arrears allegedly incurred between 2003 and 2007.
MTN officials said their reconciliation shows that the telecom giant only owes URA Shs19 million in tax arrears, which they cleared when the tax body issued a grace period in 2007.

12th March

MTN posts 6.3% growth.MTN Uganda increased its subscriber base to 7.6 million during the year.Impressive growth rates were also witnessed in the data segment, where the company has shifted focus as voice revenues continue to dip.

And now 15th March

Ugandan police are currently investigating their first case of mobile money fraud. The scam included at least two companies police said. Investigations are looking into how transactions were made, including loopholes which could have allowed criminals to use new services to steal from users and telecom operators.

A lot happening in this company.

seems the fraud story on the 15th is unconnected with the tax story of the 13th.

The amount lost to fraud was not stated.
