soapdish: @OP If you are on ARV drugs long before the medicals, your viral load would likely be very low and may not be detected. That is your best option. If you have not started on the drugs, you better start. Goodluck.

The tests used are based on the presence of antibodies to HIV, and the not virus itself. So even if the viral level is undetectable, the test will most likely show positive.

@OP, the need for the test will be mostly for documentation purposes, and not as a basis for denying you employment. Like most contributors have said, it's best to involve your relations particularly your uncle.

Best of luck smiley

@op, pls visit the Synagogue Church on a Thursday morning with your results. They will screen you for an onward healing process which by God's grace will be successful.

As for d Customs job, with ur current status your chances of getting employed is slim cos dey might not want to employ you after knowing your status.

torkaka: if your uncle is getting you the job through general recruitment then am afraid you will be tested during training. they might kick you out. but if your uncle is well connected and its through replacement then lucky you, you wouldn't go through any testing.

on another note i'd like to chip in a few words for yoU. why don't you want to disclose your status even to family? i have a cousin who got infected and told everyone. initially we found it difficlut to deal with it but as time went on every one accepted it (infact we hardly remember her health condition) and now she is happily married. LET YOUR FAMILY KNOW! EVERY OTHER THING WILL FALL IN PLACE.

Well said!

This thread just reminds me of why Nigeria is where it is today. If you are ill people, please go to hospital or a certified alternative medicine practitioner. All of these goons talking about TB Joshua will only set you back.

TB Joshua dashes to the hospital anytime he is ill. Don't be a slowpoke by following such terrible advice for your illness. These goons are leading people to a quick and painful death for their pecuniary interest.

Waoooooo, I made the front page, what a pity it's cos of illness, all the same I appreciate all these contributions but telling ‎♍Ɣ uncle is out of d question that means every body in ‎♍Ɣ village will hear of it so I better keep it to ‎♍Ɣ self. As for the job I might ₪☺τ̅ go for any test when it comes to that stage. Thanks all.

fork adict: I thought it's illegal to make subject someone to take HIV test without the person's express permission? A prospective candidate can sue a prospective employer if the candidate finds out that he was made to undergo HIV test and was not employed by the company.

Lawyers in the house. Can y'all confirm this?

I see that you have lived in the U.S or overseas too long to forget that Nigeria is different. When you mention "sue" in Nigeria, people look at you and wonder, which country are you from. This is not America where people sue left and right, back and forth. You can even get sue for staring at someone too long. They even have a legal term for it: inappropriate and undue staring.

Young lady stay strong and shouldn't let your status hinder your aspirations.

@ OP: You need to tell your uncle, make him aware of your status. As for not disclosing your status to your employer, I apologise if this comes across as harsh. But your employers need to know. It's not just for HIV, any sort of ailment that could affect your ability to perform your duties, MUST be disclosed. With HIV, it's even more essential.

If you were to collapse, your employers need to be aware of your health history. There are also the added complications - if you suffered an injury at work that caused you to bleed, your employer (and work colleagues) need to be aware of precautions to protect themselves. HIV is controllable these days, and most sufferers will lead normal, fulfilled lives. But it's irresponsible to leave others open to the risks involved with handling injuries. Supposing your first-aider at work has to treat a simple cut? He or she would need to know what precautions they need to take to help YOU, and protect THEMSELVES.

I wish you all the best, whatever you decide.

I really hate to say this and trust me ,i do sympathise with you. It could have been cancer, kidney or anything but the truth is that we should stop seeing HIV as a death sentence. The system as we know it is still discriminatory and the outcome is most likely. All i can tell you is to tell them but at the same time tread with caution. You can't keep this secret for ever and that i know

Go ahead seeking for the job. If they eventually get you tested, since you don't knw if HIV test is inclusive, i advice you inform ur uncle. But if they don't test u at all, you may wait till u're ready to let the family knw.

Don't mind those who say noone would stigmatise. I would if i were in their shoes and that's LIFE. However, with time, peeps will come to terms with reality and embrace u while they still can...Goodluck !!

Re: HIV & Work: Desperately In Need Of Advice by sinie: 7:34am On Mar 29, 2012
@ op! When you are given your letter of offer of appointment you will be required to be certified medically fit! Now you have to use a hospital approved by the organisation. The doctor is the one who signs all yóur tests you are supposed to take. And yes HIV test is included! When the test results come back based on the results he will sign your certificate of fitness! Now that's what you ll submit NOT the test result! No doctor will certify you unfit because you have HIV esp when its not yet AIDs! ( Drs in the house pls back me up)your uncle does not have to know becos the truth is its not rili his business. Just go for the tests and get your medical fitness certificate! You already have yôur letter of appointment you just need to submit that b4 u ll be paid dats all! Wish u the best of luck!

Hi. I am a specialist HIV doctor in a government hospital and deal with these issues frequently. I have HIV positive people everywhere, banks and multinational inclusive. As long as you are taking care of yourself, you will be certified fit by the doctor.
