Lokoja-Abuja Road Traffic Holdup: Worst Ever! by mannet(m): 2:23am On Apr 07, 2012
On Easter friday(Good Friday) while travelling from Abuja to Lokoja,i experienced the worst traffic holdup in the history of Nigeria, started my journey around 11am but arrive lokoja 12am on saturday due to traffic,it was so terrible that all vehicles were on standstill for 10 hours with very slow movement. The roads are so bad, road safety could not do their job,yet the contract for the dualizing of the road has been awarded since year 2000,yet nothing has been done about it,meanwhile it took the federal government one nite to remove fuel subsidy...who is deceiving who? Am glad some senators, few politicians & their escorts were on that same road as we all experience the hell togeda.Pure water was sold for N50/sachet,no food, people drank village well waters,Soji boys on the road had a small party despite the situation,it was realy a terrible xperience & wish not to have it again,i pitied people travelling far east, south or north, this guys might get robbed on their way...hold up was still heavy & standstill whch might not clear till sunday or monday,GOD deliver Nigeria from failed leadership & corruption. If u were on that road too please kindly share your xperience. I have only travelled by road from Abuja once.
Never to be repeated in this my life time.

I think I was asleep behind the vehicle . . .the only passenger at the back of course, so I sprawled out behind the seat to make a nice comfortable bed for the super long journey to the South South. I flew in to Nigeria the previous evening. Then I suddenly found myself on the floor of the vehicle. It took me a few minutes to figure out what I was doing on the floor of the vehicle. I thought I was in another world. . .come to find out the driver had slammed on the brakes and flung me from my deep slumber into the sad reality of the Nigerian Abuja road. He was trying to dodge a porthole.

That Lokoja of a place is not where you want to find yourself. Congested and plain NASTY!

This must be a nightmare.

This is the poor trying to take advantage of stranded people yet they complain the people in power are taking advantage of stranded masses. Our problem is far beyond what we think, it totally begins with the idea of get rich quick which the masses itself possess.

May God help us.

I faced a terrible one too at Efurun roundabout in warri lasted 24 good hours. That was last week friday, reason for the hold up cud nt be ascertained while some where saying its cos of the army checking point, others pointed accusing fingers @ MFM (there was an all night prayer @ there prayer city along the xpress). Funny enuf the said man of god was xcorted by stern looking armed men and other vehicle pushed or shoved aside...........as for Abuja Lokoja road, that evil is wat we are living with.

Yesterday was heading to Enugu from Asaba and got stuck at the Niger Bridge for 2 hours.

Why can't we have a second Niger Bridge? So much talk and no action from GEJ's government. Though I must commend them for the repair of the Benin-Ore-Lagos road but it is not enough.

According to recent research,if a man spends 3hrs of his life in holdup everyday,by the time he is 80years,he would've spent 6years of his life in holdup...for you to spend 24hrs on dat road,ur own go don dey reach like 10years of ur life o.

My friend who left Benin by 6.30am on his way to Minna was also caught in this traffic along with his wife and new born child. They got to Gwagalada at 1a.m and had to spend the night there.Imagine using two days to travel from Benin to Minna. The worst spot is the Lokoja bridge where some vehicles had to bypass the bridge by any means necessary to get to the other side. What a pity sad

Holdup in Nigeria is not always due to bad road. If Nigerians had regard for orderliness, most of the hold-ups wont even happen. Majority of the people plying the Nigerian roads cant really drive. Driving is not about moving the vehicle, but also respecting rules and regulations and other road users. Nigerians are quite stubborn and impatient which explain the frequent occurence of terrible hold-ups everywhere and a lot of ghastly accidents taking many lives with it. Even on a bad road, you dont need to spend hours if all people would behave in an orderly manner. Alas, there are laws, but definitely there is no order in Nigeria.

I was lucky to have escaped on Thursday as the hold-up was beginning to gather momentum. I knew it was going to be HELL. I joined the grid-lock from Kotokarifi village (last town before Lokoja) and spent close to 1 hour 30 mins before I got to Lokoja. (a journey of about 15 minutes)

At a point, them Soldier boys parked many of us for 'wrongful driving' and seized our car keys (my family were in the scotching heat for about 45 mins, while I was running up and down to retrieve back my car key). I don't wish that experience to my enemy.

I feel your pain.

our bus got to ajeokuta at about 3:30pm yesterday but got to abuja at 4am this morning. i just cant stop asking what is going on. sometimes i think it is us the lead that create these unhealthy conditions for ourselves due to the impatience that has eaten deep into us.

@Okooyinbo: My brother, nothing more to add after ur post. GOD bless u.
@OP: Sorry for ur bad experience.
I love driving a lot but when i come home (Nigeria) nowadays i rather go on my journeys by air for fear of robbery, unending hold-ups etc. Its terrible!
Though our past govts caused most of d problems but we d citizens are a problem unto ourselves also. Here in England u can travel from Hull City to London/Birmingham or Manchester (all d roads are lighted) even at night and get to ur destination at d appointed time without fears imposed by d govt or d citizens.
