the iconic abuja city gate is being gradually removed piece by piece.this is to make way for new fly overs to ease trafic on th ever busy musa yar'ardua way.we are seeing the last days of the monument which was an iconic symbol of the fct. already a new city gate has been designed by Ehrlich Architects of Culver City, California and Triad Associates of Nigeria who teamed up to win First Prize, at a competition organised by the government to find the best design for the new city gate.

So how much would this new 'gate' cost?
Re: Abuja City Gate Being Removed(pictures) by Ilaje44(m): 12:27pm On May 11, 2012
[size=13pt]If the FED would draw up development roadmaps and truly invest a little of the energy and money wasted on Abuja and take active role in the development of the largest cities in all the Geopol-Zones of Nigeria, it would go a long way in alleviating/adressing:
1. Poverty
2. Infrastructural deficit
3. etc...

The FED is getting just too much of Nigeria's revenue! The federal Government share of the national cake is over proportionally high.

Fools always think about foolish things. Is there any benefit in having a “city gate” in Abuja? I guess the moronic numbskulls should also think about the padlocks too.

So there is no new project waiting for attention in the country or has the gate become too small to pass their stolen wealth?

The poster of this thread is having a laugh! You have all been fooled. Can't you see these pictures were taking during the construction of the present gate? can't you see the completed gate was painted and the the claimed to be demolished was not.

My people,
Is there any statute that says Abuja must be built in one day? I do not know of any.
My opinion is that these fat cats are just building at an inflated and fast rate to
fill their pockets, opening up new estates /districts to allocate land to themselves
and subsequently putting this stolen funds to use . Head or tail, they win.

I am not ware that Brazil (Brasilia), Tanzania (Dodoma), or any other country is building
their new capitals at such a fast pace.

Now hear this....The Germans had Bonn for over 50 years before moving to Berlin but they were
in such a hurry.

Its a pity....everything in Nigeria is something else....

Ehrlich Architects, teamed with Nigerian-firm Triad Associates, recently won an international design competition for the New Abuja City Gate. This 98-acre site, that spans the main highway leading into Abuja, provides a dynamic entryway to Nigeria's new capital city, serving multiple symbolic and practical functions. The iconic design of the Gate's tower and pedestrian bridge creates an international landmark that points the way toward a modern future, while embracing the country's heritage. The program for the project includes: the City gate/monumental tower, commercial area, recreational area, reception block, public grand stand, parks, and a gymnasium. Construction for the project is set to begin in 2010

This New City Gate provides a dynamic entryway to Nigeria’s new capital city, serving multiple symbolic and practical functions. The iconic design of the Gate’s tower and pedestrian bridge creates an international landmark that points the way toward a modern future, while embracing the country’s heritage.

The bridge’s pylon and structural cables can be seen as an immense loom, metaphorically weaving together Nigeria’s many different peoples into a single fabric. The cables suspending the bridge can display a changing array of flags, of the Nigerian states, African or world nations. Pedestrians animating the bridge in their brightly-colored clothing are “threads” on this Living Loom. The form of the Gate also evokes the traditional Nigerian bow harp, with its gentle curves and strings. Local laterite clay formed into pavers make up the walking surface of the bridge. The concrete outer surfaces are painted to match the clay, their hue reminiscent of archaeological terra cotta Nok sculptures found in the earth around Abuja.

The pedestrian bridge connects the two sides of the 98 acre site: the formal reception hall and plaza to the north and the “casual” elements to the south. The formal side is built on top of a hill, with views of Central Abuja, while the casual side with its planted roofs, virtually blends into the landscape. The amphitheater, encircled by a sloping path that links the bridge and lower plaza, has a canopy of photovoltaic panels that shades the seating area by day and powers the lighting of the bridge at night.

By the way how much was budgeted to remove the gate?
Because we know how much was spent to remove the hills in Delta State for the Asaba International Airport.
