are you sure?? thats not so old for a plane..

The plane was built in 1983. It is bigger verison of DC 81. That is beside the point. With proper maintenance a plane can still fly at 30 years old. Delta fly a lot of MD88 that are at least 30 years old. Both MD88 and this plan in question were built by the same company in St Louis.

Thia is what really pissed me up. I have to copy and paste the following. I was not able to insert the link.

Build-up to final crash of Dana aircraft MD-83 in Lagos

A Dana Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83 with registration number 5N- RAM that finally crashed, yesterday, killing about 153 passengers on board, was a disaster waiting to happen.

On May 3, an unnamed Lagos station manager of the airline was reported to have drawn the attention of management of the airlines that the aircraft in question needed to be grounded for general check-up but that alarm was ignored.

So on May 11, 2012, the same aircraft that was billed for Lagos/Abuja with more than half capacity passengers and an air return and had emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed airport. Reports said passengers on board had to hurriedly disembark and sought alternative means of travelling. No casualty.

On May 25, 2012, the same plane that was to do Lagos/Calabar flight also made another air return to Lagos after the crew reported engine fault. There was also no casualty.

Then came the final straw. On June 3, 2012, the same MD-83 with registration number 5N-RAM was performing a flight 9J-1993 from Lagos to Abuja with 153 passengers on board when the crew also discovered that the engine had developed fault. The pilot made a quick air return to Lagos.

But while on a final appraisal to the runway 16L, the aircraft rammed into a power line, crashed into a build-up area about 5-6nm from touch down and burst into flames, killing all passengers on board.

Just look at the condition of the airports and that will tell you about the planes. Just in utter disarray. Nigeria, is there a hope for you? People just slaughtered because of negligence. Maintain the planes, they can't. Of course, this could have happened anywhere, but this is so senseless because there were so many warnings before this happened. I just pray for the families of those lost. We need action in Nigeria. I wish I knew what to do.

I warned Dana, says Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio
Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio yesterday said he recently warned the Managing Director of Dana Air on the need to ensure its aircraft are air-worthy.
The governor, according to a statement by his Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, advised Dana’s management in a recent telephone chat not to endanger the lives of Nigerians.
The governor’s warning came on the heels of an averted air disaster involving Dana aircraft en-route Lagos from Uyo, which had technical problems that forced the aircraft to hover for hours before finally making it to Lagos.
Akpabio bemoaned the disaster and described it as a national calamity that calls for more stringent safety measures in the aviation sector.
He said regulatory agencies should ensure that airline operators adhere strictly to global aviation operational standards.
The governor, who called on airline operators in the country not to experiment with the people’s lives, maintained that similar situations had caused serial air disasters in the past thereby resulting in massive loss of lives and the extinction of affected airlines.

I wish Governor Akpabio had gone a step further by alerting the regulatory authorities to take action rather than a verbal warning to DANA AIR Management. Perhaps, this disaster could have been averted.

People have succeeded in watering Nigeria with peoples blood. Have they started arresting people already? the next thing we will be hearing is that the perpetrators of this crime are at large! The blood of the children and everyone on that plane and the innocent ones on the ground are crying out for justice. What of the the children unjustly made orphans for no fault of theirs. Spouses are rendered widows and widowers, childless etc? Who will fend for them? Who will console them? What of the innocent ones on the ground sent to their early graves for no just cause? I weep o. I weep!

Notable accidents and incidents■On December 1, 1981, an Inex-Adria Aviopromet Flight 1308, an MD-81 crashed into Corsica's Mt. San Pietro during a holding pattern for landing at Campo dell'Oro Airport, Ajaccio. All 180 passengers and crew were killed.
■On August 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines Flight 255, an MD-82 crashed shortly after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport due to flight crew's failure to use the taxi checklist to ensure the flaps and slats were extended for takeoff according to the NTSB. All crew and passengers were killed with the exception of a 4-year old girl, Cecelia Cichan.[30]
■On December 27, 1991, SAS Flight 751, an MD-81, OY-KHO "Dana Viking" crash landed at Gottröra, Sweden. In the initial climb both engines ingested ice broken loose from the wings (which had not been properly de-iced before departure). The ice damaged the compressor blades causing compressor stall. The stall further caused repeated engine surges that finally destroyed both engines, leaving the aircraft with no propulsion. The aircraft landed in a snowy field and broke in three parts. No fire occurred and all aboard survived.
■On June 1, 1999, American Airlines Flight 1420, an MD-82 attempting to land in severe weather conditions at Little Rock Airport overshot the runway and crashed into the banks of the Arkansas River. Eleven people, including the captain, died.
■On January 31, 2000, Alaska Airlines Flight 261, an MD-83, crashed in the Pacific Ocean, due to loss of horizontal stabilizer control.[31] All 88 people on board were killed. Following the crash, the acme nut and jackscrew recovered from the aircraft were found to be excessively worn[32] and found to be the cause of the crash due to inadequate maintenance. The FAA ordered airlines to inspect and lubricate the jackscrew more frequently.[33]
■On October 8, 2001, Scandinavian Airlines Flight 686, an MD-87 (SE-DMA) collided with a small Cessna jet during take-off at Linate Airport, Milan, Italy. The Linate Airport disaster left 118 people dead. The cause of the accident was a misunderstanding between air traffic controllers and the Cessna jet, and the SAS crew had no role in causing the accident. Also the ground movement radar was inoperative at the time of the accident.
■On May 7, 2002, China Northern Airlines Flight 6136, an MD-82, from Beijing to Dalian, crashed into Bohai Bay near Dalian, after the pilot reported "fire on board". All 111 people on board were killed.
■On November 30, 2004, Lion Air Flight 538, an MD-82 crash landed at Adi Sumarmo Airport in Surakarta and overran the end of the runway. There were 25 fatalities.
■On August 16, 2005, West Caribbean Airways Flight 708, an MD-82 crashed in a mountainous region in northwest Venezuela killing all 152 passengers and eight crew.[34]
■On March 4, 2006, Lion Air Flight 8987, an MD-82, after landing at Juanda International Airport, applied reverse thrust although the reversers were stated to be out of order. This caused the aircraft to veer to the right and skid off the runway coming to rest 7,000 ft (2,100 m) from the approach end of Runway 10. No one was killed, but the aircraft sustained $3 million in damage.[35]
■On September 16, 2007, One-Two-GO Airlines Flight 269, an MD-82 crashed at the side of the runway and exploded after an apparent attempt to execute a go-around in bad weather at Phuket International Airport. Eighty-nine of the 130 people on board were killed.[36][37]
■On November 30, 2007, Atlasjet Flight 4203, a MD-83 crashed in the southwestern province of Isparta, Turkey, killing all 57 people aboard.[38] The cause of the crash was attributed to pilot spatial disorientation.
■Between March 26/27, 2008 and then again between April 8/12, 2008 an FAA safety audit of American Airlines forced the airline to ground its entire fleet of MD-80 series aircraft (approximately 300), to inspect the aircraft's hydraulic wiring. American was forced to cancel nearly 2,500 flights in March and over 3,200 in April.[39] In addition, Delta Air Lines inspected its own MD-80 fleet to ensure its 117 MD-80s were also operating within regulation. This prompted Delta to cancel 275 flights.[40]
■On August 20, 2008, Spanair Flight 5022, an MD-82 registration EC-HFP from Madrid's Barajas Airport crashed shortly after takeoff on a flight to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. The MD-82 had 162 passengers and ten crew on board, of whom 18 survived. The crash was caused by attempting to take off with the flaps and slats retracted. The flight crew omitted the "set flaps and slats" item in both the After Start checklist and the Takeoff Imminent checklist.[41]
■On November 19, 2009, Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation Flight 3711, operated by MD-82 9Q-CAB overran the runway on landing at Goma International Airport, and suffered substantial damage. The overrun area was contaminated by solidified lava.[42]
■On 21 June 2010, Hewa Bora Airways Flight 601, operated by MD-82 9Q-COQ burst a tire on take-off from N'djili Airport, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hydraulic systems and port engine were damaged and the nose gear did not lower when the aircraft returned to N'djili. All 110 people on board escaped uninjured. The airline blamed the state of the runway for the accident, but investigators found no fault with the runway.[43]
■On 3 June 2012, Dana Air Flight 997, operated by McDonnell Douglas MD-83 commercial airliner crashed into a two-story building in Nigeria's largest city of Lagos. The plane had 147 passengers on board. No one on board survived. The incident is still under investigation. The plane has been deemed destroyed.

sauer: From my knowledge of aircrash incidents, this crash looks to me like loss of hydraulic pressure. But then, the captain would have noticed it earlier and thus alerted air traffic control. So, Air traffic control probably knew about the state of the aircraft before the actual crash. Investigations should eventually show this.
Witnesses said the plane struck an electric pole before crashing. The thing is, the plane was crashing already before striking the electric pole. And it was probably gliding to its end. Apparently, hyrdaulics failed, and pilot lost control of aircraft. Aircraft didn't fall out of the sky, but simply glided into those buildings.
My point: Engine failure or loss of hyraudlics

I agree with you ur analysis. I also want to beleive it's either engine failure or loss of hydraulics because the crew had some form of control of the flight for it to have landed on its belly, however, the questions still remain, did he he run out power at least to let him touch down the runway, or did his hydraulics fail to enble him control the landing gears and all other ancilliaries. I hope the NCAA will come out with their report. May the soul of the departed rest in peace.

OMG! shocked I can't help but conclude that these MacDonald Douglas MD-80 series airplanes have some really big technical issues with them. No wonder the american company is gradually phasing them out.
The ill-fated Dana plane was said to had been under repair for several weeks and the airline's station manager protested its use but the Indian management insisted that it should fly. The German stations are reporting that the plane which crashed should never have taken off because of its write off state and that they are even wondering how the plane made it to Lagos.

From Dana's website, the plane was said to be a "Boeing MD-83". Well, Boeing and MacDonald/Douglas have corroborated from time to time, but according to Wikipedia, no such plane exists. That's really not important. Actually it's not really built by Boeing. It was designed and built by McDonald Douglas and later the company was bought by Boeing.
These airplanes are no longer manufactured and the Chinese have built many of these airplanes on their own. You have to look at how the airplane was maintained and how proficient the flight crew was in its operation.
The MD 80/83 planes have a terrific flight record and also have a high cost of routine maintenance. The American owners opted to sell these planes to developing countries in Africa and Asia cheaply irregardless of its high maintenance standards.
The western world deemed them too expensive to maintain, so they sold them. Does anyone think that aviation mechanics in Nigeria know something that the western world doesn't? I know they do maintain the planes in Nigeria but these planes must get regular maintenance at internationally recognized facilities in order to get landing privileges. Dana's MD83 airplanes were previously owned by Alaska Airlines. Don't forget Alaska had a fatal accident couple of years back over the Pacific ocean due to bad maintenance.

In Essence, in the aviation industry when maintenance and management is in a crash course, destination is almost never guaranteed.

Its more than obvious that the aircraft was faulty cos we all in the area saw the way and manner the pilot maneuvered the aircraft before trying to crash land at a relatively open space at the railway line and as of then the engines had failed cos there was no noise coming from the plane again. it passed over my roof and if my house had been a two storey building i might not be here posting this. may their gentle souls rest in peace

WHAT A BLACK DAY: from Mtn to Julius berger, to elf and other oil companies, now the aviation, they are here to exploit nigerians, imagine these foreign companies make heavy money here in nigeria but dont consider our lives, it could have been me or u they killed, this was not an accident or fate, its just a sheer attitude of carelessness and negligence plus unproffessionalism for a engineer to order for a faulty plane to be flown, someone at the top management of Dana Air should be made to suffer for this loss to nigeria. THIS IS A REPORT FROM SOMEBODY THAT BOARDED THAT SAME FLIGHT... A WEEK BACK... read her story

"Report of technical lapses on the part of DANA Airline, as regard the crashed plane. "A survivor’s story." PWOJ: I was on this same dana plane 23 may. It was delayed from take off from mm2, I saw the Philippine mechanics with buckets draining out hydraulic fluid under the left side under carriage tyre mechanism, a part was taken out but not replaced, yet we were told to board. I told the flight supervisor my name that am an aerospace sys engr and am concerned at the operational state of the plane, the guy told me to see the pilot, I did, he was a Caribbean decent capt & nw zealand asian looking co pilot, he confirmed work was done and asked how I knew, I said I saw it from d windows of the airport and the part was not replaced that I aslo saw the mechanics Philippine & indian guys under the plane, he told me don't worry if its not ok we won't fly. I pinged my family and friends of wot I saw and the names of the people I spoke to. Should anything happen as well as asking that the plane is taken off but am just a simple powerless passenger. We landed and the pilot waited at d door to shake me as to say I told u. Sadly this plane wasn't taken off service to sort out the hydraulic leak or landing gear problem because it was still making money for indians in Dana, now Dana plane has killed my friend Ehime, levy & ijeamaka & 150 others. All because they refused a simple precaution advice over their financial wants. My story can be checked from dana airline/mm2 logs. May God burn you all in Dana."

If we didnt gain anything from this crash, can a thread be created and updated on this kind of near-miss incidents so that we can spread the word when a particular airlines plane has had an issue? We can always know the particular plane by its flight number. Its said that its that same plane that had the emergency landing in lagos that was downed yesterday.

I read a few days ago that a virgin plane refused to start after passengers had boarded and they finally disembarked and were refunded

Really sad but we cant keep blaming just the foreign companies. If the regulatory authorities do their job like they are supposed to, then there will be no loopholes or avenue for these foreign companies to serve Nigerians with these mediocre services that put our lives @ risk and get away with it all the time. I don't see why a company that refuses to comply with regulations should not be kicked out but then we keep hearing about "corner-cutting" and other forms of corruption.
