VP Sambo, Service Chiefs In Panic Meeting As Jonathan Jets Out To Brazil

Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo and the country’ssecurity chiefs had an emergency meeting in Abuja on Tuesday to review the security situation in the country.

Those at the meeting included the Chief of Defense Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, Chief of Army Staff, GeneralAzubuike Ihejirika, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral OlaSaheed Ibrahim, Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Umar, and the Director General of the State Security Service, Ita Ekpenyong. The National Security Adviser, General Andrew Owoye Azazi, also attended the meeting.

Mr. Sambo stood in for President Goodluck Jonathan, who is on his way to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil for the United Nations’ Earth Summit tagged Rio+20.

After the meeting, Mr. Azazi told State House correspondentsthat the bombing of churches last Sunday in Kaduna and Zaria was a criminal act.

All the service chiefs refused to speak with journalists after the meeting, but Mr. Azazi volunteered that the meeting was to review the security situation in the country.

Asked if there was any escalation of violence in Kaduna, Mr.Azazi said, "Not right now. It escalated but the security forces have moved in, so the place is stabilized.” He added that the governor and religious leaders were also talking.

Stated Mr. Azazi: “What we are talking about is how [to] extend this discussion beyond just the state so that it can go down. Thechurch leaders can talk to the leaders in the mosques to see how they can tell the adherents to please be mindful that we need to address the security situation in the country peacefully."

Asked if President Jonathan was considering the declaration of a state of emergency in Kaduna, the national security adviser said, “Who is supposed to declare? I don't know about that.”

Mr. Azazi also defended President Jonathan’s trip to Brazil in spite of the serious security challenge facing both Kaduna and Yobe States. He said, “When the President is not in town, the VP is in charge and when there is [a security] situation, the VP calls the security chiefs to have a meeting. So, we just had a meeting to assess the security situation in the country.”

Even so, several sources in Abuja told SaharaReporters that there was widespread disappointment in Mr. Jonathan’s decision to head out to Brazil at a time when Kaduna, one of Nigeria’s most important and cosmopolitan cities, was in the grip of religious violence. “The president should have stayed home to monitor the security threat and sent his Vice President to lead the Nigerian delegation,” said a member of the National Assembly.

The President couldn't have sent his VP to represent him over in Brazil, while he stayed back to deal with the more pressing matters right there in Nigeria?

No it is not out of point. You better read your post again to better understand why the response was appropriate.
