I don't think Nadal should lose his #2 ranking, but he probably will because the guy he lost to seed was ranked so low.

The ATP ranking is very dynamic and funny. Rafa made it to the final last year but couldn't make it to the 3rd round this year which means rather than gaining points, he actually loses (I'm sure you are aware the ranking is based on a 12 month period performance) while Fed progressed to the 4th round, a level short of where he lost to Tsonga in '11. Nadal would have gained so much points with the Roland Garros victory but since he also won it last year, nothing changed on the log, practically.

Besides, Boris Becker also did mention it in his post match analysis, so I'd say yeah ''it's almost official''..

No the calibre of the opponent isn't a factor. The number of ranking points a player wins depends on how many rounds he progresses through and what category that particular tournament has been graded. For example Nadal just earned 35 points in total for qualifying and winning his first round match.
