Security Message for U.S. Citizens - Threats Against U.S. Installations (July 3, 2012)
July 3, 2012

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria is issuing this emergency message to inform U.S. citizens of potential threats against U.S. installations during the July 4 holiday week. The U.S. Embassy in Abuja is working with the Government of Nigeria to implement additional security measures during this period. The Embassy remains open to the public; individuals visiting the U.S. Embassy are advised to remain alert and bring to the attention of U.S. and/or Nigerian authorities any suspicious activities, or seemingly "out of place" objects, including unattended packages.

All U.S. government personnel in Abuja continue to be restricted from going to places of worship and all commercial establishments adjacent to any place of worship, and are required to return to their residences by 12:00 midnight.

The security situation in Nigeria is fluid and unpredictable at the moment. The U.S. Mission in Nigeria, therefore, strongly urges U.S. citizens in Nigeria to be mindful of their personal security and to keep personal safety in the forefront of their planning. U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Nigeria are strongly advised to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens without Internet access may enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. By enrolling, you make it easier for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact you in case of emergency.

U.S. citizens should contact the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos for up-to-date information on any restrictions. The U.S. Embassy in Abuja is open Monday - Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos is open Monday-Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The U.S. Embassy in Abuja can be reached by telephone, including after-hours emergencies, at +234(9) 461-4000. The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos can be reached by telephone, including after-hours emergencies at +234(1) 460-3600 or +234 (1) 460-3400.

Current information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States or a regular toll line at- 1-202-501-4444 for callers from other countries. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays). Working in a company that has a number of Americans, I also got a mail last week Friday warning of potential attack around 'places of worship and commercials centres' in Abuja, warning US citizens in Nigeria to stay off those places this week.

I shook my head for Nigeria when I got the mail:
1, If Nigerian government gives half of the concern for its citizen the way American govt does, our situation will not be this bad

2,American govt got credible info and alerted its citizens, Nigeria, in their own country, either did not get or dismissed it in their 'nothing-to-worry-about, we-are-on-top-of-the-situation' rhetoric.

Take this seriously, the US Embassy in Abuja has proved to be a good barometer for Boko Haram attacks in the past.

People keep using the word CIVIL WAR, there is no civil war going on in Nigeria. Civil war is when a part of the country is fighting for what every reason. Not even the whole Muslim North is in support of this BH guys, there is no one part of Nigeria fighting against the rest. If one of the states up North will total embrace the BH idea and start fighting then you can say there is a civil war going on.
