NCC Closes First Bank Branch Ibadan Over Illegal Internet Use by mukina2: 11:03am On Jul 12, 2012
The Nigerian Communications Commission on Wednesday closed down the New Ring Road branch of First Bank in Ibadan over alleged illegal use of Internet services.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, also, the bank branch manager, whose identity was not immediately known, was arrested by the NCC enforcement team for allegedly resisting the action.

NCC Head of Enforcement team, Mr. Efosa Idehen told journalists in Ibadan after the operation that the bank was still using its frequency without approval in spite of several warnings.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that business activities at the branch were paralysed as scores of customers were not allowed into the banking hall.

“Most of the banks remain adamant after several warnings issued to them on the illegal use of the frequency since April, 2011.’’

He said that the (5. 40GHz- 5. 75GHz) frequency band is for data transmission.

Idehen said that closure of the bank’s operations was “a test of the law”, adding that the bank branch manager obstructed the enforcement team’s operation for over an hour.

“We have done it in Lagos and this is the first time it is happening in other South-West states,’’ he said.

what does that mean?

are they not using an ISP? why not just tell the ISP to stop servicing clients with those bands? or does First Bank operate direct internet services for itself?

The headquarters of the Bank should be responsible for this not the branch manager if the problem is nationwide.

FirstBankis a bankwith high integrity and known for leadership in complying with the relevant laws of the nation. Suffice it to say that it has produced reputable Nigerians who are placed in esteemed positions. This case must be well investigated and whoever is behind the game plan to dent the image of the Bank should be made to face full wrath of the law. I am proud of the FirstBank Brand!

Most of the approved frequencies are always congested, its the reason for the network issues, some banks find a way of deploying that data via the restricted bandwidth most of which are for other secure transmissions.

This move is as daft as Nigerian Commissions can get.
You went and arrested a product Consumer instead of the ISP that provided the bandwidth? Does the bank manager know anything about frequency?

Very soon police will start arresting people eating bread at home, leaving out the bakeries, because the bread doesn't have the right quantity of GEJ's cassava content. Absolute Stupidity!

Obviously you are ignorant. Is the branch manager the owner of the bank. All installations are always from the head office and not branch. Branches are to operate.

This story makes no sense of course as always with Nigerian news report. The bank must have leased the dedicated line/bandwidth from a telecom company who must have been licensed by NCC. If the bank decide to also use the Internet on their leased bandwidth, what concern NCC?

This NCC are set of useless people. NCC go after all the GSM providers that have been exploiting and sucking us dry and arrest them, and also ensure that number portability comes into play very fast rather, rather than this your senseless activities. NCC grow up

I think i support u guys.pple do not know that banks are provided service by all these gsm network provider. How can a IT officer in banks differenciate between the microwave equipments. And again, the contract the signed with the telecoms company was to install micowave equipment of between 13Ghz and 23GHz depending on the distance of the bank to the connecting site. So,in place of dat because banker or their IT guys knows little, they went ahead to install Radwin Equipment of bane 5Ghz.so,who is to be blamed?
