Climate Change: Lagos Lists Mitigation Measures - Go Plant A Tree! by Sunofgod(m): 11:17am On Jul 15, 2012
Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), and Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, at the weekend said the devastating impact of climate change could be drastically mitigated in the state if all the residents are committed to planting a tree annually.

The leaders expressed the view at the 2012 tree planting campaign in Mushin, Lagos , noting that the present generation faces a grim future if no decisive measures are taken to stem the effects of climate change.

Fashola, who was accompanied by the Special Adviser on the Environment, Dr. Taofeek Folami and Chairman of the Odi Olowo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Adeyemi Ali, among others, stressed the need for every Lagos resident to play in creating safer environment.

He explained that the importance of planting trees in the environment could no longer be over-emphasised at the instance of flooding, rainstorms and ocean surge, urging all Lagos residents to join the government in its determination to build and create a cleaner and safer environment He said: “You can see extreme rainfall in the last 48 hours and not more than 50,000 people have been displaced in Japan. You can see the rain in Mississippi and in Newcastle, and there is still more to come.

“We can see now that the solutions we put in place last year has reduced the flood we experienced in some areas including Agege, Lekki and Arigbanla, Idi Araba, there is no flood there again despite the heavy rains.

Is planting of tree going to bring about good roads or eradicate flooding caused by blocked drainage, canals and natural water ways?

I agree that planting trees will not solve the problems you list above.

However, I believe people should plant trees, for their own good. As they serve as natural wind breakers and help shield homes from the winds at least, and keep erosion in check, to an extent.

Every house should have at least one good tree on the property, in my opinion. But really it is to the advantage of those who live in these homes, as their cooling bills would be reduced as a result.

How many people even live in their own house in Lagos?
Should Tenants plant trees too?
Besides most of the grounds in people's compounds are cemented or bricked.

I'm sure 'Tinubu' is putting something together - most likely outcome of non complianace is a fine.

But that's niether here of there - What Fashola has demonstrated is his ignorance of the impending doom facing Lagos.

Property owners are responsible for their properties, whether they live there or not. Cemented grounds can be broken to create space for at least one tree

Re: Climate Change: Lagos Lists Mitigation Measures - Go Plant A Tree! by mu2sa2: 9:25pm On Jul 15, 2012
What does it take to plant a tree? Just put a seedling in the ground anywhere in Nigeria and with minimal attention it will grow into maturity. But most people dont know the value of trees to themselves not to talk of the environment.Trees cool ur house. U can also harvest tree branches for firewood. In both cases u save money. LASG should do more public enlightenment and even set yearly target for itself on the number of tree it will plant and nurture

Biology teaches that oxygen is the most important substance for survival....and if trees breathe in carbon-dioxide and breathe out oxygen.

Even if it does not help the floods, it will help the quality of life in Lagos

Just a lil correction, Trees breath in oxygen and exhale Carbon IV oxide as animals . .they only utilize Carbon IV oxide during photosynthesis wink

Good idea, but the state government should not deter its policy from doing most of the planting. The government should be responsible for the road and park planting of trees. Also, private companies, multi-national and big banks can be parts of this tree planting project.

You're so not understanding! Tree planting isn't gonna bring good roads but are gonna maintain it. Trees prevents erosion which is the main cause of water logging & flooding. the governor is telling you the only way to revive your environment & if you're wise you'll do exactly what he says

Let's not go too far now. No matter how many trees you plant, if the roads are hellish, they will get worse even with the rains. Trees do not help maintain roads persay. . . they simply serve to prevent major erosion. Go to villages where you have trees all over the place, you will still find erosion.
