A petitioners’ witness, who claimed to be an ICT expert from Kenya, David Ayu Nyango Njoga has said the results of the last presidential election were stored in a server allegedly operated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Njoga said he only got the report, which he later analysed, from a third party website : “www.factdontlieng.com”. The witness, who claimed that the information was provided by an INEC official, said the said INEC official acted as anonymous person, whose name is not available He said the website was created on March 12, 2019. When reminded that the presidential election held on February 23 and the results released before March 12, the witness went mute. https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-i-got-presidential-results-from-website-says-atikus-witness/ |

The discovery of the headless bodies of a father and his son on their farm in Ebom Community, Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, weekend, created fear in the entire area. It was gathered that they were reportedly ambushed by gunmen suspected to be from a neighbouring village, Usumutung. Vanguard gathered that the prolonged crisis between Ebom and Usumutung was rekindled Saturday morning, when Usumutung people reportedly ambushed the people of Ebom, who were working on their farms and killed one Mr. Oti Ato and his son, Sunday. Vanguard also gathered that Michael, the man’s grandson, narrowly escaped death with a bullet wound from their assailants, who disappeared after carrying out the attack. The Village Head of Ebom, Chief Sunday Obite, told Vanguard on phone that three persons are still missing as the headless bodies of the victims have been recovered with the help of soldiers deployed to the communities since the crisis started sometimes last year. Narrating what transpired, the Village Head said the man and his family were harvesting cassava, when they were ambushed and the man and his son killed. Chief Obite said: “The man and his family were harvesting cassava when they were attacked by Usumutong people. “According to the grandson, who is receiving treatment in a hospital at Itigidi due to bullet wounds he got while hiding in the bush, he saw them cutting off his grandfather and father’s head from his hiding place in the bush. “They even made the wife, Eliza Oti, watch while they beheaded her husband and her son and asked her to take the message to her people. “We believed that since soldiers are present, peace had returned. But we have been proved wrong once again. Even as they steal our farm produce, we kept mute. But now they have started again by killing a father and his son in the presence of the wife.” Another indigene, Oban Bassey, also told Vanguard that they have recovered the bodies of Mr. Oti and his son with the assistance of soldiers. His words: “As we speak, we have been able to get the corpses of Oti and his son with the help of soldiers at Usumutong. We have equally reported to the DPO and he has seen the corpses.” Police react Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident, stressing that the Commissioner has deployed men to the area to stem escalation of the crisis. She said: “The state Commissioner of Police, Austin Agbolahor, has deployed men to maintain law and order. “We are aware of the killing and the Commissioner of Police has deployed men to the place and the community leaders have also been invited to meet with the Commissioner for further deliberation. The command appealed to media organisations to verify their information before publication. Failure of Journalism in Nigeria... Zamfara State Police Command has refuted allegations of bandits attack on presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar’s witnesses travelling to Abuja to testify against the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari. The command denied claims by the witnesses they were attacked by bandits in Zamfara state, a situation that forced them to scamper into the bush and stopped their journey to the Supreme Court to testify for the former Vice President. In a statement by SP Muhammad Shehu, the command explained: “It is pertinent to categorically state that as far the crime statistics of Zamfara state is concerned, there was no any attack by bandits either on villages or on any person or group of persons traveling on any highway in the state. “Since the inception of the ongoing peace and dialogue initiative in the the state, attacks, kidnapping and other heinous crime in the state have been reduced drastically to about 98 percent, a situation that has restored peace and stability in the state.” Shehu disclosed unprecedented achievements have been recorded through the rescue of over 100 persons kidnapped and held in captivity for months through the initiatives of Commissioner of Police Usman Nagogo. “Therefore, the command wishes to refute the entire story as misleading and a calculated attempt to undermine the current effort of both the state government and the police to bring lasting peace for social and economic development in the state,” the statement added. The command appealed to media organisations to verify their information before publication. https://thenationonlineng.net/atikus-witnesses-not-attacked-in-zamfara-police/ |

Given the kind of theatrics that come with political campaigns, it was not surprising that some mischief-makers in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, used the name of the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to mock the opposition during the recent campaigns. Despite the royal honorific, the APC social media proponents took it to town that Prince Uche was designated to lead the PDP to a second place. After all, his name is Secondus! It now seems that Prince Secondus, hailed by admirers as Total Chairman and who had in the past been praised for his political acumen may yet be living to his name in pulling his party down at strategic opportunities. While he was praised in some circles for managing a successful campaign despite the taunts of the APC social media soldiers, the jury out there is that he failed to provide leadership during the 2018 Osun governorship election. Osun was a state many believed was there for the taking given the record of the former administration in the state. However, at about the most critical period of wheeling-dealing, the PDP national leadership was missing in action. And when present, was politically inept. Now, a development in the House of Representatives is another avoidable bungle that is smearing the Secondus leadership of the PDP. The decision of the leadership to project Mr. Kingsley Chinda as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives is one that has astounded many partisans of the opposition party. The shock is in the nepotistic ascription that has been given to the choice of a Rivers man to become the number three man in the party that has a Rivers man as chairman. That is despite the vote of the majority of the PDP caucus for another person. Yes, the PDP was subtle in criticizing President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice of appointments last week that showed the first 10 aides from one ethnic bloc and all from one religion. Nigerians from outside the president’s catchment area for juicy appointments may have given up on seeing President Buhari make the kind of broadminded appointments as were made by Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo. But there are still some appointments being made that especially rankle. One of such was the appointment of a new director-general of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru. After staying for more than three years, as acting director-general of NIPSS, Jonathan Juma is to step down for a subordinate, Habu Haladu who has been promoted over him as substantive director-general. Though not totally shocking given the present inclination of the present leadership, the emotional trauma of reporting to a subordinate who is promoted apparently based on religious and ethnic primordial sentiments is demoralising. As Dr. Isaiah Osifo wrote in an article published this week, Nigeria succeeds in the field of soccer when we present our best eleven irrespective of where they come from. As Osifo noted, the man of the match in the Nigeria–South Africa encounter of last Wednesday, Samuel Chukwueze, may not have surfaced in a Nigerian team if the present primordial sentiments used in leadership selection were taken into consideration. Nigeria is not working because of the leadership recruitment process that puts meritocracy at the lower rung well below tribe and religion. Why Nigeria trashed South Africa was because the nation chose to put her best players forward. It is against this background that the distress of the PDP can be seen in its faux pas in the House of Representatives. The act of the national chairman of a political party writing to the presiding officer on who should be the choice of majority or minority leader is itself offensive to democratic ethos. Some presiding officers would certainly not accept such communications! The PDP has undoubtedly found itself in a bind on the issue of selecting the principal officers of the House of Representatives. The rules do not support the inclinations of the national leadership of a political party telling the legislators who should be their leader! It was not surprising that the party set up a ten-man committee comprising of many past senior legislators and presiding officers to help it escape from the embarrassing situation it has found itself. Yes, those who know Prince Secondus speak of his humility and grace. It is understandable that he may have been under extreme pressures in guiding the party in selecting the new minority leader of the House. The lesson for the Secondus leadership of the PDP is that it cannot afford to make a slip on any issue. Doing otherwise would leave it permanently in second place in everything! The chance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the Feb.23 presidential election to present 400 witnesses listed in their petition against President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election within the remaining three days continued to tick away. All parties in the matter had agreed to open and close their cases within specified period. The parties therefore agreed to workable modalities in the management of time to ensure the petition was dispensed within the 180 days allowed by the Electoral Act. Flowing from the agreement, the ten days allotted to the petitioners to open and close their argument which commenced on July 4 would expire on July 17. All the respondents were also given six days to present their responses to the petitioners’ allegations. In the light of this, the respondents are expected to open their separate defences between July 18 and July 25. To the chagrin of visitors to the tribunal on Friday, the petitioners had urged the court to adjourn until July 15. Chief Chris Uche, SAN, Counsel to the petitioners had informed the tribunal that their witnesses earmarked for the day could not be reached. Uche said the witnesses who were based in Zamfara State were attacked by armed men while on their way to Abuja on Thursday. Dr Livy Uzoukwu, SAN, the lead counsel for the petitioners, rose to complement the information been availed the tribunal by Uche, adding that the witnesses were yet to be found. “My Lords, it is true that those we have listed to present for further testimonies were attacked while coming to Abuja from Zamfara state, and therefore it will be impracticable to go further. “We pray for an adjournment until Monday, July 15 for continuation’’, Uzoukwu said. So far, the petitioners have tendered 31,287 exhibits to prove various allegations of malpractice in the poll, but have presented less than 60 out of the 400 witnesses. Earlier, Mr Oseni Haruna, Local Government Area Collation Agent for PDP, told the court that violence and over-voting marred the process, but was unable to provide cogent evidence to substantiate those claims. Similarly, Mr Zakari Ibrahim, another Local Government Area Collation Agent of the first petitioner said there were clear collusion between the security forces and electoral officials. When crossed examined whether he signed forms EC8C (Result Sheets) from the polling units and wards, Ibrahim agreed to have signed the result sheets. On his part, Silas Paris, also a Local Government Collation Agent of PDP from Borno State said there were unpardonable arithmetic errors in the results INEC declared in his local government. Paris, however, failed to provide the authentic results he claimed were received from the party’s agents at both polling units and wards’ levels. Mr Usman Adamu, also an agent of the PDP in Ningi Local Government of Borno State, told the court that the election was characterized by vote-buying, over-voting and ballot snatching. During his cross examination on how many polling units he visited during the course of performing his function, Adamu informed the panel that he visited 30 out of the 232 polling units in the local government. He also told the tribunal that he could remember the number of ballot boxes that were snatched. Adamu concluded by telling the panel that he signed the final result sheet containing the number of votes both Atiku and Buhari garnered. Mr Hassan Maisarafa, another agent of the PDP from Potiskum in Borno State informed the tribunal that the Chairman of Potiskum Local Government, Ado Hamza had threatened to retrieve farm lands and other incentives from staff of the local government if they failed to vote for APC. However, when asked to show proof of how that affected the voting pattern, Maisarafa was left stammering. Furthermore, Mr Peter Sabo, Local Government Collation Agent of the PDP in Askira, Yobe State said he signed the result sheets from nine wards out of the 13 wards. He explained that his refusal to endorse forms EC8Cs from the remaining four wards hinged on reported incidence of over voting and illegal cancellation of votes. Mr oluwafemi Ogunrinde, an INEC Ad-hoc Technician engaged to monitor the function of card readers, said some officials of the commission had instructed him to transmit results to a server. Ogunrinde, when crossed examined, said he had not seen the server before. He was also unable to provide the secret access code to the acclaimed server. The Trump administration said on Wednesday that it would investigate whether a French plan to impose a tax on American technology giants like Facebook and Google amounts to an unfair trade practice that could be punished with retaliatory tariffs, escalating its global trade fight. The investigation, to be carried out by the United States trade representative, is the latest attempt by the Trump administration to shelter American companies, particularly in tech, by taking a more aggressive stance toward allies’ trading practices. It is likely to further stoke tensions with the European Union, which President Trump has already threatened with auto tariffs and criticized for selling more goods to the United States than it purchases. Mr. Trump has repeatedly said the European Union is worse than China when it comes to trade practices and has lashed out at its top antitrust regulator, Margrethe Vestager, saying she has unfairly targeted Google, Apple and other American companies. The American action announced on Wednesday is aimed at France, which has moved independently from the European Union to seek a tax on technology companies. https://www.vixpal.com/docs/u-s-announces-inquiry-of-french-digital-tax-that-may-end-in-tariffs/ |
The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has approved an interim forfeiture of Peter Nwaoboshi’s properties to the Nigerian government. The court made an initial order for the confiscation of 14 properties and 22 bank accounts linked to Mr Nwaoboshi on Tuesday. The bank accounts were traced to Zenith Bank, UBA, Access Bank and Sterling Bank, and they were all joined in the suit, the temporary forfeiture order seen by PREMIUM TIMES showed. The Delta North senator was given 30 days to justify how he acquired the properties and convince the court not to grant a permanent forfeiture of the assets to the Nigerian government. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/339156-just-in-court-orders-forfeiture-of-nigerian-senators-14-properties-22-bank-accounts.html |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer in the September 22, 2018, gubernatorial election in Osun, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on Thursday declared he would become the governor of the state by next week Friday. He expressed optimism that the Supreme Court judgment slated for July 5 in the appeal filed against the Court of Appeal ruling that declared incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola would be in his (Adeleke) favour. The apex court had fixed July 5 for judgement on the petition Adeleke filed against the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, Oyetola, who was returned elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the conduct of the rerun poll. Adeleke, who spoke at the PDP secretariat in Osogbo tasked members of the party to remain calm and prayerful ahead of the July 5 judgment so that they can get a favourable verdict. https://www.google.com/amp/s/tribuneonlineng.com/221961/%3famp_markup=1
