There was panic in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over alleged threat by Governor Nyesom Wike to resign as the South-South coordinator for the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar. The disquiet in the party was informed by the fact that Wike is central to PDP’s success in the South-South which the party had taken for granted as a stronghold. It was learnt that governors, ex-ministers and top leaders of the party have been begging the governor to rescind his decision. But indications showed that the governor was angry because he has been isolated in the scheme of things. Instead of being on the driver’s seat like the case before the National Convention, the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, and the National Working Committee (NWC) defer more to Atiku, the National Leader of the party, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson who was one of the arrowheads of Atiku’s victory at the party’s convention. It was learnt that unlike pre-convention era, the party leadership does not rely on Wike for funds any more. The sudden financial independence of the party, through alternative sources in the party, has made Wike to know little of developments in PDP. A few others, however, attributed Wike’s anger to the spill over of the party primaries in which his candidate, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal lost out. Investigation by our correspondent showed that Atiku and many PDP leaders were caught unawares by Wike’s threat. A top source said: “We were all shocked to read of his plans to quit as the South-South coordinator of PDP campaign for Atiku. All our leaders have been in panic since the news broke out. This development will be a setback if not quickly reversed. “As I talk to you, most PDP governors, leaders, ex-ministers, ex-governors and leaders have been begging Wike to rescind his decision. This is what we have been doing today (Saturday).” The source said PDP leaders also felt embarrassed because Wike has not raised any objection. The source defended what he described as a “painstaking” composition of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC). The source added: “Wike never complained about any issue; he has not expressed reservations on the composition of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) and he just came out with a bang. “The PCC was representational of all the tendencies in the party. It took us much time to release the final list because of consultations. Atiku, who was in the custody of the list, was always tinkering with it after due consultations with the party hierarchy and leaders. “Contrary to Wike’s claim, no director was brought from outside. All the directors were appointed from the National Working Committee. “Let me give some examples. The Contact and Mobilisation Directorate is headed by the National Organising Secretary, Col. Austin Akobundu; Kola Ologbondiyan is in charge of the directorate of Media and Publicity; and Finance is being managed by Abdullahi Maibasira, just to mention a few. “Wike himself put the NWC in place with his boy, Uche Secondus as the national chairman. To avoid this type of rancour, the party restricted the choice of directors to NWC members. There is no basis for Wike’s complaint because he owns the present NWC of PDP.” Findings, however, revealed that Wike’s grouses were consequences of the National Convention of the party in which his favourite candidate, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal lost out. Also, the Rivers State governor was said to be aggrieved because he is fast losing his control of the PDP machinery. A reliable source said: “Wike’s anger has to do with perceived gang up against him in the party to clip his wings. He only hid under alleged lack of consultations with him in constituting the PCC. He is just waking up to the reality that he has lost the grip of the party. “Before the National Convention of the party in Port Harcourt, he was calling the shots in the party including the financing of PDP. For paying the piper, he was dictating the tunes. This wholesale control of PDP gave him the confidence that Tambuwal will emerge as PDP presidential candidate. “Unknown to Wike, some party leaders decided to clip his wings. To jolt him, they toyed with the idea of changing Port Harcourt as the venue of the National Convention in order to gauge his mood. He became riotous to the extent of threatening the party and making allusions to Atiku. “The second stage of the plot against Wike was the stoppage of the party’s leadership going cap in hand to him for funds. Some leaders of the party, including those who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to PDP started financing the party covertly. “The final stage was the emergence of Atiku as the presidential candidate of the party contrary to Wike’s permutations. He was devastated to the extent that he could not wait to listen to the acceptance speech of Atiku.” Responding to a question, the source said: “The true position of the game in PDP is that the power equation in the party has changed. The party leadership does not source funds from him anymore and it defers mostly to Atiku, the National Leader of PDP, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the Chairman of the Reconciliation Committee, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, who was central to the mobilisation of support for Atiku.” A member of the Presidential Campaign Council said: “The challenge at hand is that Wike has not fully accepted the choice of Atiku. But he should know that God gives power and he also takes power from leaders. “For instance, our evaluation so far revealed that it is only in Rivers State that government functionaries and party leaders do not work for Atiku because they are reading the body language of Wike. We are relying on a few friends and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to mobilise support. His threat to quit is just the icing on the cake.” As at press time, the presidential candidate of PDP, Atiku jetted back to Abuja from the United Kingdom to “take charge of the situation ahead of the beginning of his campaign on Monday in Sokoto.” “Our candidate is just back from London to take charge of the situation, including Wike’s palaver,” a reliable source said. http://thenationonlineng.net/2019-panic-pdp-wikes-threat/ |

Kwara residents groan as projects nominated by Saraki abandoned, poorly implemented Many accidents have occurred on the Ero Omo Kilanko community road but that of July 15 is still fresh on the minds of residents of the area. It was night, and rains had flooded the newly constructed road. Before the Toyota mini bus could manoeuvre to avoid the ravaging water on the road, the driver and two commuters on a motorcycle found themselves in a ditch. “We had to rush them to the hospital that night. It was very unfortunate that two of them suffered permanent damages,” Abdulrasaq Quadri, a youth in the community recounted. The accident was avoidable as the community recently benefited from a N50 million constituency project fund to construct a 4.5 kilometre road in 2017. The project was facilitated by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki. The Accountant General of the Federation said at least 70 per cent of the funds was released for the project. At the entrance of the road lies two signages, erected by two companies both laying claim to the project. RKK Inspire Limited and Royal Value Int’l Limited raised their signage almost side by side. However, when a team from UDEME, an accountability project of the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism, visited in September, work done on the road was found poorly executed. The road which was said to have been ‘completed’ in March 2018 had no sign of new construction. Its light asphalt surface had been eroded in most areas and the contractor only tarred less than one kilometre of the five kilometre specification. It would be hard to convince a newcomer that it is a new road. One of the youth in the community, who helped mobilise resources as part of community effort to make the road motorable, Abdulrasaq Quadri, lamented. “It’s disappointing that government can do this kind of shabby job for us. See what they called road – no drainage, potholes scattered and rendered almost impassable. “They didn’t tell us the nature of the project, we just woke up one day to see contractors start work on the road. When they started, we were happy and our people started dancing to show appreciation, little did we know the joy will be short-lived courtesy of poor execution. We wouldn’t have been optimistic if we had known government’s intervention will further complicate our lot as a community.” Ero Omo Kilanko Road constructed in March Many residents who spoke to the team said the road was better off without the shabby construction with the level of maintenance the community youth put into it. Mr Quadri said the community had recorded expenses to the tune of N400, 000 in construction of bridges and drainages before the arrival of Mr Saraki’s intervention. Another youth, who identified himself as Temitope said the contractor only poured asphalt on the road without making efforts to provide a drainage system. “If they will do this road at all, they need to do the drainage first, water gushing out whenever there’s rainfall causes serious hazard. The one they did was just a one sided drainage. “When we challenged the contractors, they complained the ministry only paid them for a one-side drainage. Even the drainage they constructed, they only used blocks and not concrete. If you trace the road down the street, you’ll see the bad road they did.” The road has become a ‘headache’ for motorists who would prefer it be left the way it was before construction. “Before they tarred this road, we cried to the government in the past to ensure the road is passable,” lamented Mr Bolaji Adebayo, a civil servant. “This road links to many places. Most times, when there’s traffic on the main road, people boycott the roundabout and ply this route to Ajase, Offa and others. “I as a person who plies this road, when they did this road, we thought they haven’t completed the road, but we are surprised that less than two weeks, we started seeing potholes, the drainage was not properly done. As you can see, this road was done in March but instead of improvement, the state of the road has gone from bad to worse. The hardship we have faced recently is more than what it used to be before they touched it.” On this day, he couldn’t drive as his car developed fault. He told the team he spends about N10, 000 more on maintenance of the car monthly. This cost, which he claims he incurred due to the bad condition of the road, is N7, 000 higher than before. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/298493-special-report-kwara-residents-groan-as-projects-nominated-by-saraki-abandoned-poorly-implemented.html

Confusion in the camp of PDP...FFK and Reno not on the same page |
A faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance on Friday emerged in Abuja with a call on the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, to resign for single-handedly endorsing President Muhhamadu Buhari for the 2019 elections. The governor had in a video, which went viral, reportedly endorsed the President during the public presentation of a book to commemorate the 80th birthday of a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah, despite having Gen. John Gbor (retd).as its presidential candidate for the 2019 presidential poll. Speaking with journalists in Abuja, chairman of the new group under the aegis of Authentic APGA, Chief Jerry Obasi, said the governor had brought APGA to ridicule, odium and made it a laughing stock in the eyes of reasonable Nigerians. He accused Obiano of anti-party activities and breach of Article 22(2D) of the party’s constitution. Obasi said his members must have to decide whether to continue on the “evil trajectory of impunity and political villainy or adopt a strategic template to guarantee the revival of the fundamental ideas that propelled the formation of APGA.” According to him, the original and foundational ideology of APGA was that it should be inclusive and guarantee the rights of members to express themselves in line with democratic principles. He, however, said that it was obvious from prevailing circumstances that the party had derailed and lost the moral compass that endeared it to marginalised Nigerians. Obasi said, “There is urgent need, therefore, for loyal and genuine members of the party to embark on a programme that would bring back the party to the original ideas. This programme would involve the reconciliation and unification of all those that fought through thick and thin to ensure that APGA serves the purpose of political emancipation of all oppressed people http://saharareporters.com/2018/12/01/apga-faction-asks-obiano-resign-endorsing-buhari |
