Senate President, David Mark, on Thursday urged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to adhere strictly to the rule of law, and respect human rights while discharging his constitutional responsibilities.

He specifically appealed to him to “do the needful for citizens anchoring his actions on adherence to rule of law, respect for human rights, freedom of expression, equity and justice.”

The senate president said he anticipated an egalitarian society under the new government where all citizens would be safe and protected to live and carry out his or her legitimate duty without fear of molestation or harassment in any part of Nigeria.

Mark, who stated this in his goodwill message to Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day celebration, also said, “all hands must be on the deck where everyone plays his or her role to ensure that our democracy endures.”

The senate president took stock of the 16 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria and urged citizens to persevere more for the continued sustenance of the system of government.

He said, “All Nigerians deserve commendation. We have done well so far. We must strive more to make democracy a way of life.

“As an active participant in our democratic journey since 1999, I can say without any fear of contradiction that our democracy has endured.

“The successes recorded so far, especially with the last general elections, clearly shows the unwavering commitment of Nigerians to its fruition.”

He noted the challenges of the democratic experiment and expressed optimism that all the initial hiccups would be confined to history soon.

Mark believes that despite its imperfections, democracy remains the best form of government that is not just representative but participatory.

He therefore enjoined Nigerians and the international community to support the new administration just as he implored them to build on the foundations of previous governments and make progress.

He also promised that the National Assembly will continue to cooperate and, indeed, lay solid legislative framework for the executive arm of government to deliver dividends of democracy to the citizenry without compromising the independence of the parliament.

Suspected Fulani militias on Sunday morning killed no fewer than 30 persons, including a traditional rulers in Iorza village of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Logo LGA is Governor Gabriel Suswam’s council, where the suspected Fulani militants have continued to kill residents for undisclosed reasons.
The PUNCH gathered that the armed Fulani mercenaries stormed the village in the early hours of Sunday while the people were preparing to go for Sunday church services.
It was further gathered that the people killed by the attackers were mostly women, children and the aged while several others are critically injured.
An eyewitness, who simply identified himself Chigh, told our correspondent that the armed Fulani herdsmen attacked the community and shot indiscriminately.
Chigh said he and others escaped the killings by the whiskers.
He alleged that the invaders equally burnt several houses in the community.
Police Public Relations Officer for the command in the state, Austin Ezeani, confirmed the report but said four corpses had so far been recovered.
He said security had already been beefed up in the area.

NIGER DELTA CLERIC ASKS AMAECHI, WIKE TO RECONCILE

The Archbishop of the Diocese of Niger Delta North, Most Rev. Ignatius Kattey, has called on the outgoing Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and the Governor-elect, Mr. Nyesom Wike, to reconcile their differences.
Kattey made this call on Sunday during his sermon at a thanksgiving service to mark the beginning of the inauguration programme of the Governor-elect and his Deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Banigo, at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt.
Decrying the partisan position taken by some traditional rulers and cleric during the general elections, Kattey urged Amaechi and Wike to begin to see each other as brothers.
“Pastors, men of God and traditional rulers should be non-partisan. They should not take side in politics. Amaechi and Wike are all Rivers people,” Kattey stressed, urging Wike not to abandon God.
Explaining that the governor-elect should be mindful of the fact that he remained the governor of the state and not that of religion or political party, the cleric expressed the need for Wike to appreciate God’s faithfulness.
The cleric, whose theme of sermon was ‘Praise God’, said Wike’s emergence as the governor-elect was an indication that it was not the will of God that he (Wike) should lose the governorship poll.
The archbishop stated that while Amaechi remained grateful to God for saving him from the PDP, Wike should also praise God for giving PDP victory during the governorship election in the state.
katey added, “You are governor to all churches; you are governor to all political parties in the state. You are governor to all, irrespective of political or religious affiliation.
“If God did not want you to be governor of the state, you can’t be. Therefore, hold on to God. I am appealing to you not to abandon God if you must succeed. They must come with all sorts of charm, but hold strong to God.
“Don’t be overconfident and don’t take things for granted. Don’t push God aside; depend on God. But if you hold on strongly to God, you will succeed. All of us have taken you by your words. Be firm. If you say you are not a secret cult member, stand firm.”
Wike restated his readiness to rebuild Rivers State, where things would function without hitch immediately he assumes office.
The governor-elect, who spoke through the Chairman of Transition Committee and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara, stated that the journey to the Government House in Port Harcourt began in 2013.

Due to the near total scarcity of aviation fuel to run the aircraft of the various domestic carriers, thousands of air travellers were left stranded across airports in Nigeria on Saturday.

Our correspondent gathered that the two largest domestic carriers in Nigeria, Arik Air and Aero Contractors, cancelled all their flights in Nigeria as a result of the scarcity of JetA1, otherwise known as aviation fuel.
At the Abuja airport, many passengers, who arrived the Abuja airport with the intention of travelling out of the city, had their flights cancelled.
Frustrated by the development, many of them left the airport in anger.
“Surely, Buhari has loads of work to do because this country is almost drowning economically and otherwise, especially when both Nigerian citizens and foreigners are trapped in one location due fuel or JetA1 scarcity,” were the words of a visibly angry traveller at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, who gave his name as Dr. Gandi Bello.
Our correspondent gathered that the situation may not improve anytime soon because of the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by tanker drivers across the country.
Tanker drivers bring JetA1 to a designated station for airlines for collection. The strike has made it impossible to get the product at the designated collection outlet.
Spokespersons of Arik and Aero told our correspondent that fuel scarcity would not have affected the airlines if the country had pipelines which deliver JetA1 to airports, as is obtainable in other climes.
Banji Ola of Arik Air, said the airline cancelled its domestic flights nationwide, but was still operating international flights.
He said, “We had to cancel our domestic flights because of lack of aviation fuel to run the aircraft. Our international flights are still running. We had a case of an international flight to London travelling to Kano to refuel before heading for its destination.”
Aero Contractors spokesperson, Mr. Simon Tumba, stated that the airline’s flights were also cancelled due to aviation fuel challenges.
After series of enquiries, the airline, in a statement made available to our correspondent, said, “Due to the general scarcity of aviation fuel (JetA1) in the country, the airline (Aero) will not be able to operate over 80 per cent of her domestic flights as scheduled.
“In the last few weeks, the supply of aviation fuel has been very irregular, which has compelled the airline to cancel some flights. We apologise to our esteemed customers for the inconvenience they may have been experiencing due to flight delays and cancellations caused by the scarcity of aviation fuel.”
The airline’s reaction showed that it was also unsure of some future flights of its customers and urged prospective travellers on Aero to confirm their trips online.
It said, “We urge our customers to always check our website or contact the call centre agent to affirm if their scheduled flight will operate.
“Aero regrets any inconvenience the changes will cause. All measures are being made to ameliorate the situation and revert to her regular flight schedule. We hope that the situation improves very soon.”

The school's security guard said the suspects crossed over a collapsed portion of the school's fence and stabbed the children.
Suspected kidnappers on Wednesday, May 20, stabbed two pupils of Fagge Special Primary School, Kano metropolis.
The school's security guard, Malam Ibrahim Dansarki, toldNAN in Kano that the incident took place around 1:00 p.m. shortly after the closure of the school.
He said the suspects were said to have crossed over a collapsed portion of the school's fence and stabbed the children, a boy and a girl, before locking them in a toilet.
Dansarki said the suspects did not remove any part of their body as being speculated in some quarters.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Magaji Majiya, who confirmed the incident, said the school's Assistant Headmaster, Naziru Mohammed, reported the incident to the police.
He, however, said that only one of the victims died, while the other, a boy, is receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
Majiya said investigation had commenced to unravel the motive behind the act and to track down the suspected killers.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has once again lambasted the Adamu Mu’azu- led National Working Committee (NWC) of ruining the party.
Fani affirmed that for the PDP to regain its lost glory, persons like Mu’azu and his NWC members needed to be fired.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, Fani-Kayode said: “The present leadership of the party, particularly its information organs, stand no chance against an APC Federal Government because they are weak and they lack understanding and courage.
“They will be savaged beyond belief and torn apart if they try it because they do not have the stomach, the grit, the appetite or the wherewithal for a long drawn fight.
“They are simply incapable of defending the President and his legacies after he has left office and neither are the majority of them even ready to do so. Instead of focusing on their numerous inadequacies and trying to fix them, these very same people are hurling brick bats at others.
“Instead of preparing to defend the party and enhancing the fortunes of the party members over the next four years, they are making childish and nonsensical allegations and alienating and upsetting many party leaders.”
He added: “What the NWC said about us is undoubtedly the unkindest cut of all. It is like Brutus’ betrayal of Julius Caesar. It is wicked, uncharitable and unacceptable and some of us will not take it.
“What they need to understand and appreciate is that we will not sit by idly and allow them re-write history or make us the fall guys. The only reason we have not opened up on them is out of respect for President Jonathan and because we want to ensure that our party remains united.
“They are indeed the enemy within. The truth is that their allegation is not only baseless but it is also unadulterated rubbish and those who made them are nothing but ingrates, cowards and traitors who know nothing about politics, political campaigns, intellectual discourse or political engagement.
“They are simply trying to revise and re-write history in order to cover up their treachery, weaknesses and inadequacies. They are fueled by hate and envy and worse of all, right from the start, they had no interest in fighting for our leader and presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan or in ensuring that he won the election.
“From day one, all they did was sulk about the fact that a Presidential Campaign Organisation had been set up and that they would not be able to have control of the campaign themselves or have access to the resources that we were given.
“At every point, they tried to undermine our efforts and sabotage us but we ignored them and remained focused on doing our job despite their provocations.

Leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) wants the in-coming administration under Muhammadu Buhari to musters the needed political will to probe the fuel subsidy regime of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Apex workers union also attributed the current scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit(PMS), called fuel, especially in the Federal Capital Territory and some other states in the federation to the inherent corruption in the petroleum industry which has also been instigated by “cabals” in the sector.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba said this on Tuesday in Abuja, on the sidelines of the interactive session for delegates billed to attend the International Labour Organisation(ILO) conference holding in Geneva, Switzerland.

He said: “We believe that the ongoing fuel scarcity in the country was deliberate, and the only lasting solution to the debacle is for the incoming administration to dislodge the cabal in the sector most of whom have held the nation by the jugular for a very long time. Sometimes,I wonder why these set of people would rather prefer exporting our crude oil and import same back than local refining”.

“Beyond the fuel issue, Wabba said it was necessary for Buhari to also probe alleged $40billion so far spent on the power sector”, he added.

He described as unfortunate the huge resources deployed in the power sector in the last few years, noting that the country had continued to grope in the dark, with power generation declined as low as 2,600MW.

His words: “At every time there is a change of guard , those cabal would always come together to make lives unbearable for the larger society. It is deliberate. We want government to address the inherent corruption in the system. Why is it happening at this time? While is it that we have not experienced this in the last four years?
