Buying from the mills remains the best, safest and cheapest way to buy palm oil.

It also saves loads of head ache in adulteration.

If you are interested in buying palm oil especially investing large sums, locate and visit the mills yourself.

Currently digging it out at a Mill located in Ufuma and Umunze, both in Anambra state. They are the highest producers in Anambra state. 25 litres selling for 8500 today at Umunze, 9000 at Ufuma. Pure and quality.

I believe at the current price, prices are hitting bottom. Not a bad time to buy.

Good luck to everyone.

Food / 3rd Food West Africa Expo To Hold In Lagos; 8th – 10th May, 2018 by agronewsng(m): 11:10am On Mar 28, 2018
Thriving business environment great backdrop for 3rd Food West Africa event

West Africa’s largest food and beverage exhibition returns to Landmark Centre in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria, 25 February 2018: The third edition of Food West Africa – the largest B2B food and beverage industry platform in West Africa – is returning to the Landmark Centre in Lagos, Nigeria from 8 – 10 May 2018. As Nigeria continues to dominate the retail sector in Sub Saharan Africa, Food West Africa organisers Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, the worlds leading publishing and exhibitions company, expect the trade event to attract more than 4,400 industry professionals from 25 countries looking to make new wholesale, retail and food service contacts in the industry.

Spanning more than 3,000 sqm of exhibition space, Food West Africa will host +100 local and international exhibitors showcasing exciting new F&B products, services and equipment from across the globe. In addition, two new country pavilions have been announced for the 2018 edition of the show – India and Pakistan. The Indian food and grocery market is the world’s sixth largest, with retail contributing 70% of the sales. Similarly, consumer industry growth in Pakistan is ranked number three worldwide.

The Nigerian wholesale and retail industry, which accounts for 16.7% of GDP, remains a lucrative investment opportunity on the back of a large and rising population with a rapidly increasing rate of urbanisation. Nigeria has also seen the development of a market for luxury goods. The country’s burgeoning middle class is expected to have consumer spending in excess of $25 billion by 2020. According to a KPMG report titled “Fast Moving Consumer Goods in Africa”, the FMCG sector on the continent stands to benefit immensely. With food, always being a necessity, there’s an increase from basic staple foods to a wide range of products.

According to Ryan Sanderson, Exhibition Director, Food West Africa: “Nigeria’s household market is experiencing strong urbanisation, creating good opportunities for many sectors, particularly fast-moving consumer goods. Now in its third year, Food West Africa has firmly demonstrated its effectiveness as a medium for regional and international companies to raise their profile in this competitive industry sector. As well as promoting supply chain partnership, along with imports and exports, the event is a must-attend for F&B industry professionals from Nigeria and wider Western Africa looking to capitalise on the best opportunity in the industry.”

Bestway, the largest independent cash and carry operator in the United Kingdom, and supply partner to over 70,000 independent retailers and 40,000 catering and foodservice operators, has also confirmed that they will be exhibiting at Food West Africa 2018 once again. With a UK turnover of £2.5 billion and a comprehensive logistical infrastructure, the company has the scale, purchasing power and expertise to help their customers compete in an ever-changing food and drink sector.

Once again, local representation from Nigerian companies is strong with key exhibitors such as Just Food Limited, ABX Food, AgroNigeria, Graceco, and Sona Agro Allied Food Industries present for the three-day event.

Education is high on the agenda at Food West Africa 2018 with a two-day free-to-attend conference that will focus on current issues in food supply chain management. “The conference has been crafted to determine challenges and help improve current systems and procedures in doing business in the West African F&B industry. All industry segments will be represented – from domestic and international large-scale food companies, governments, local agencies and associations – to give their insights into improved technologies and advanced measures to consolidate and implement best practice in food distribution retail in West Africa,” commented Sanderson.

The event continues to enjoy firm support and backing from the Association of Food Vendors in Nigeria (AFVN), the National Agency for Food and Drug (NAFDAC) and NASON.

The show is open from 10:00 – 18:00 on Tuesday 8 May and Wednesday 9 May, and from 10:00 – 17:00 on Thursday 10 May. Visitor registration is free via the website prior to the show opening. During the show days, a fee of N2,000 is charged. For more information, please visit: www.food-westafrica.com

Agriculture / How Precision Farming Can Benefit Farmers This Season by agronewsng(m): 7:23pm On Feb 19, 2018
By Ezinne Okorie

Did your field produce lesser yield than you expected last season? And do you think that you did everything you were supposed to do? Apparently, there is something you must not have put into consideration; something many Nigerian farmers are also guilty of – some level of precision farming.

Recently talks about precision farming have begun to make waves. While some consider it as the future of agriculture, others have simply dived in and are already reaping the fruit of their labour.

Precision farming simply involves the use of accurate soil and crop data to improve yield. The main goal is to optimize agricultural returns by matching farming practices more closely to crop needs. If you hope to get optimum yield and make maximum profit this season, then you should be considering precision farming; because it is only through precision farming that you can provide your crops exactly what they need and in the amount they need it.

Now, before you start thinking of the cost involved and how to get the needed technology; you should know that precision farming is not always about automated sensors, robotic tractors and other high-end techs. The purpose of this article is to expose how Nigerian farmers who do not have access to this techs can bring some level of precision into their farms, reduce waste of farm inputs and most importantly, obtain optimum yield.

To achieve this feat, you must put these 4Rs into consideration:

RIGHT TIME: the application of nutrients and water at the right time is critical. It ensures that crops get their nutrients and water exactly when they need them. Also applying these at the right time decreases potential loses to the environment and saves the farmer a lot of cost.

RIGHT RATE: application of fertilizer at the right rate increases nutrient use efficiency while still bringing greater returns to the farmer. The nutrient content of your soil can either be low, medium or high with respect to a particular crop; and it is always best to match fertilizer addition to the potential of your soil. If not, you may either be under fertilizing or even over fertilizing. The right nutrient rate simply means using the fertilizer to its fullest potential.

RIGHT SOURCE: there are different types of fertilizers that are available for use. Some can make your soil acidic; some are compound mix – comprising of 3 or more nutrients; some are single nutrient sources; some have unique blends; and some have really impressive fertilizer grade. Choosing the correct nutrient source can really save you a lot of cost and problems as well.

RIGHT PLACE: it is also important to use proper fertilizer placement methods at all times. Application of nutrients in the right place increases nutrient use efficiency by the crops, and also minimizes waste. You certainly do not want to apply fertilizer on your field only to have it run-off before your crops can even use it.

With these 4Rs, you are well on your way to higher yields this season. However, it may not be easy to carry out the 4Rs without some soil and crop data. Every soil and crop is unique and should be treated as such, or else you may not get the maximum yield you hope for. A good soil test can help you make the right decisions on the best fertilizer source for your soil, appropriate fertilizer application rate, fertilizer timing and fertilizer placement. It can also help farmers who are into irrigation farming take the proper steps during off-season farming. Therefore, before you begin farming this season, get you soil tested to determine its capability. Precision farming starts now, you do not have to wait for the future.

Ezinne E Okorie is the head of Soil Management Unit, Agro News Nigeria.

Reoccuring questions here bothers on time of planting, yield and when to invest in the project. Lets make clarifications again, so we do not derail from the major purpose of the thread.

If Sesame is to be grown in Nassarawa or Benue, you have the option to grow it either as early or late crop, all dependent on the rain. For the early you plant in April. For the late June.

In Jigawa where we are cultivating this year, it is grown as a late crop in June. Please this is the fact. Lets not argue further.

Contemporary yield of sesame had 500 -600kg. Is this best yield? No. Why low? farmers do not employ GAP (Good Agricultural practise). Has there been an improvement? Yes. We got 800kg last year in Jigawa. Basically we got 8 bags average.

Is 800kg the best that could be got? No. Sesame is not very tolerant to weed. Again at harvest we lose a lot through shattering and not threshing right. All these corrections we should have better yield, all in all.

How the project works? If you are interested in the sesame farm projects, you can get involved by applying for a land in the farm estates. Under this option you farm yourself and responsible for GAP. We only provide security and you can rent our equipments.

The other option, you fund a minimum 1 hectare at a set fee. A first year it is more expensive, but reduces at second year because costs for land clearing, soil testing, survey and other fees in processing are removed.

This initiative aims at promoting sesame seed farming. The vision is to get Nigerians know about the potentials for the crop but also go further to offer them a platform to get started.

nosa2:

Just stop. You are obviously lying. If you plant in June what time do you harvest?

You successfully planted 150 hectares, why are you looking for funds? You should have made more than enough to finance this year's planting

Sir. Please get your facts right. Sesame is a late crop. Planting in Jigawa is June. Harvest starts early November and still runs into december depending on how early or late. The Nassarawa and Benue sesame come out early.

Your next question. If we did 150 ha last year why still need money? This is not a one off make money project. Agro News Nigeria is leading an initiative to stimulate sesame production in Nigeria. The aim is to see Nigeria achieve its potential in the production of the crop.

The major challenge to sesame production is that it is just a Northern crop (Jigawa, Nassarawa, Benue & Taraba) hence you don't get a lot of people willing to come over to the North just to farm the crop. However, at harvest most exporters from Lagos axis find out that there are less supply than their demands.

Also, another challenge is that because the production is left mainly to peasant and uneducated farmers, yield continues to be a problem as most farmers get 500 to 700kg maximum. What we have done in 2016 and 2017 shows that with best practises the yield can be increased as being done in Sudan and Ethiopia.

The project is therefore, a platform to first make available land to prospective investors. Many do not even know where to get the lands to farm the sesame in these states and the modality to go about it.

The farm estate solves two problems; land and time. Investors can actually just pay and get lands and farm themselves within each mapped portions. For those who do not have time but already know the value of the produce, they simply fund a hectare(s) and get produce or its monetary return at the end of harvest.

Our goal is to get people farm the wasting lands that are suitable for the crop's production and make the crop a prime export revenue earner for the country.

This is not a one man initiative. All prospective investors are welcome to attend our question and answer sessions in Lagos and Abuja. Those in Kano can visit our office, where daily sessions are held.

Thanks for commenting

The time of planting sesame varies according to location sir. You cant plant sesame in september in Gumel or any part of Jigawa state unless if you are ready to supplement with irrigation. The Op also erred, April is very early for sesame cultivation.

hank you for your reply. There is no where in the post that it says planting starts April. We had three sites in 2017. Jigawa, Nassarawa and Benue. For this year's project we are focusing only in Jigawa because of instability in Benue and land issues we had in Nassarwa.

If you are growing sesame in Benue, Taraba and Nassarwa the early planting starts Aprl. The late planting Mid July. If you are growing in Jigawa, we start Late June.

This is not guess work. This what we have done again and again. However, because the rain is unpredictable, you have to be ready by April / May, wether you are growing in Derived savannah or sudan savannah.

Agro News Nigeria is not new into the crop. It is a crop we are actually working hard to improve its yield, cultivation and development.

I spoke to the number advertised in this post and there was a glaring red flag. The advertiser said all funds are needed by end of March so they can begin planting Sesame seed in April. The problem with this story is that Sesame seed is a late season crop. It is usually planted in September. For someone who claims to be an expert in this not to know this basic information is very suspect.

Please everyone should deal with care.

P.S I am a sesame seed farmer so I know what I am talking about

Sir. Sesame is not planted in September anywhere in Nigeria. From what you wrote, you can't be a sesame seed farmer. You must be an internet farmer. Sesame seed in Benue and Nassarawa for the early crop is planted at on set of rain; April (But varies), the late crop is planted two months later; June or July.

In Jigawa, where we have over 150 hectares planted last year, planting was done in June, as the rain came earlier. Please tell me where you planted in September last year.

On funds; sir, this is our standard. We did it last year, its same this year. Anyone interested in the farm should pay by end of March. Also no one forced you to be a part of it. With farms and offices in Jigawa, Kano, Benue, Nassarwa and counting, we cannot suddenly become a fraud and scam because you didnt find the terms of subcription okay for you.

Visit NEPC Abuja or closet USAID office, visit NCRI and you know our status and history.

Please, let us be very careful the way we arrive at conclusions.

In that post, there was a mention of investor's question and answer session that is even free. You should have atleast attended before raising red flag.

Thanks for stopping by.

That's good one of you out there. It's our responsibility to help a system work according to its design. Fraud seems to be the bane of our growth these days. People want to be rich anyhow, cheaply and easily without breaking sweat

We should take is easy and make confirmations before writing. Obviously every effort in Nigeria is a fraud. We have been working with NCRI for two years on sesame. In this years we have not gotten less than 700 - 800kg yield per hectare.

The improvements; NCRIBEN -01M actually is projected to give 1.2 - 1.5 tonne with best practise. We are doing E8 and with the experience and lessons learnt last year, we should get that.

Please again, lets be kind in criticism.

Nigerians are very difficult people to deal with honestly. This is a crop we have been planting for almost 4 years. Pls where in Nigeria do you grow sesame seed in September. Where? This is our third project. There is even installmental payment options up to March. If we are planting sesame by even June and you are yet to declare interest by March ending, of what need is your investment when planting has started.

We must take it easy how we want to run others down.

P.S I am a sesame seed farmer so I know what I am talking about
Agriculture / Get A Land And Farm Sesame Seed In Our Sesame Farm Estate In Jigawa by agronewsng(m): 8:10pm On Jan 24, 2018
Sesame seed farming is becoming increasingly popular in Nigeria from relative obscurity. Sesame popularly known as beniseed is a short duration crop grown throughout the year where irrigation is practice. It is a warm season annual crop and is considered drought tolerant but needs good soil moisture for establishment and for height yield.

Rising from relative obscurity and being a largely abandoned and unknown crop, sesame seed currently has grown to take a leading position among key agricultural commodities of export value and that contributes immensely towards foreign exchange earning in Nigeria raking over $150 million in 2016, and expected to gross $200 million dollars in revenue at the end of the 2017 trading and export.

Currently according to reports and data from the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Sesame seed among other agricultural commodities of export value is now the second highest earner of foreign exchange after cocoa.

Agro News Nigeria is leading a national charge for sesame seed farming and investment in its value chain in Nigeria.

Under our farm estate model, investors and the general public are invited to invest in sesame seed / beniseed farming through our cooperative and contract farming investment plans.

Under the contract farming option, investors and the general public invest and fund a minimum 1 hectare farmland which is 100% managed by Agro News Nigeria. operations on the farm from soil analysis, development, planting, harvest and threshing is 100% handled by Agro News Nigeria using best and good agricultural practices (GAP) – giving rise to optimum yield. Produce or agreed return is handed to the investor.

In the other option - cooperative plan, investors who have the time to manage their operations can also take up lands under lease arrangement to manage farm operations in their farmlands within our farm estate. All farms are fully secured and managed by Agro News Nigeria.

Our Farms are located in Gumel Jigawa State.

We will be holding an Investors Question & Answer session in Abuja and Lagos on the 3rd & 17th February respectively. All prospective investors are invited to attend.

Agriculture / Why You Need Soil Testing And Analysis Before Planting by agronewsng(m): 12:38pm On Jan 15, 2018
By: Ezinne Echem Okorie

In Nigeria today it is a common practice to see farmers and most newbies into farming planting crops on farm lands without proper soil analysis on the assumption that the proposed crops to be cultivated generally do well in the area under consideration, leaving out the all important need for soil analysis and testing.

Also, in Nigeria today, it is common for a farmer to simply buy a couple of bags of NPK fertilizer, and proceed to apply the fertilizer to his crops without regards to the actual need of the crops in question; or the ability of the soil to supply these nutrients. This practice may not be entirely incorrect since farmers can roughly estimate the amount of fertilizer their crops require using the blanket fertilizer recommendation. Nevertheless, it is a practice that is vastly inaccurate and may not even be cost-efficient considering that fertilizer recommendation changes with location as a result of soil variability.

And if any farmer argues that the fertilizer recommendation he uses is location-specific, it will then surprise you to know that the soil surveys that gave birth to those blanket recommendations were done on a large scale covering a whole region or even a whole agro -ecological zone. Although these surveys provide a general idea of the soils in a region or agro ecological zone, it may not in essence represent the soil condition on your own field. An even greater reason to be skeptical is how long ago this fertilizer recommendation was prepared.

The fertilizer recommendation that was prepared about 10-20 years ago should not be the same in use today, since the soil does not maintain the same fertility status over time. Several changes can happen to the soil over that period of time – continuous cultivation may facilitate the removal of nutrients; irrigation may encourage leaching of mobile nutrients and accumulation of salts as the case may be; use of machinery may compact the soil; and cropping system (e.g. rice paddies) can utterly change the characteristics of the soil.

These changes should be met with a suitable recommendation, especially one that must encourage the sustainability of the soil we all depend on and the environment as a whole.

A more accurate, sustainable and cost-efficient way to meet the soil requirement for your crops is therefore through regular soil testing.

Soil test provides a valuable piece of information on the makeup of your soil, and allows you to make reliable and productive agricultural investment decision. It is only through soil testing that a farmer can determine the nutrient content of the soil, and with this information he is sure to apply the exact type and quantity of fertilizer to meet the requirements of his crops while taking into consideration the nutrients already present in the soil. This means that farmers can minimize fertilizer expenditure, over-fertilization which can pollute the environment, as well as obtain maximum crop yield.

Soil testing does not only determine nutrient content, it also exposes other conditions that may affectproductivity. Soil pH for instance determines which nutrient will be available for plant use irrespective of whether all the nutrients are present in the soil; Cation Exchange Capacity influences decisions on timing of fertilizer application and even pesticide application; and soil water holding capacity determines the timing and quantity of water application under irrigation agriculture. Most importantly, soil testing can help provide recommendation on how best to improve these soil conditions.

It is now obvious why farmers in Nigeria do not meet up the maximum yield of most crops cultivated. What is also obvious is that reckless application of fertilizer has led to unnecessary waste (which unfortunately devastates the environment). However, it is not too late to begin to do the right thing; and the starting point is soil testing.

Ezinne Okorie is the Head, Soil Development Unit at Agro News Nigeria.
