Hi,

For passport transmission, Abuja is still the best in Nigeria. Between one to two weeks, you will get your stamped passport. I noticed from my GCMS notes ordered after arriving in Canada that my TRV for student was affixed in Abuja despite sending through the Lagos VFS. So there is a chance most/all passports end up in Abuja after all.

Eilenora:
Hello,
Can you please share an update on this. Where did you submit and how long before you got your passport back?

I think YES because it is still technically a temporary visa category. Although, it may not be as rigorous as a student or visa visa. My own opinion.

Please I will like to know, is ties to home country a requirement for SOWP?

P.S:
T.A was only requested at MMIA but not mentioned at the point of entry, although this depends on the officer on duty. My spouse also contacted the MP twice to raise an enquiry which they did.

Most importantly, God hasn't forgotten you. You will need a very good dose of patience wink Pray for God's favour on your application and journey. It will end in praise and you will share your testimony soon

I think this SOWP application is already approved (congratulations!) but the excemption to travel request is what is not considered here. Also, it seems if the SOWP visa was issued to your spouse before now and they had tried to travel, the clause "no written authoriaztion required" could allow them travel - just guessing from the notes but can't be too sure. The technicality raised by the VO here is crazy but also revealing. The lesson from this is that we and our SOWP applicant spouses should just take heavy dose chill pill so we don't unknowingly complicate things.

I pray this and every similar applications end in praise as usual!

nochyks87:
Good day house. I am currently trying to figure out the exact meaning of this Gcms notes because its very confusing and I am also consulting with other people on it.

NOTE: In the application letter, there was never any mention of my spouse coming to VISIT me, however, there was clear indication of her applying for SOWP and the main purpose was family reunification.

I feel SOWP applications are not prioritized at the moment. There seems to be alot of drags on this type of application. Has anyone who recently applied for SOWP for their family after arriving in Canada (as international student) got approval or got GCMS notes that indicates some form of activities on these particular application(s)? My family appled about 2 months ago, upfront medical passed within 4 days, biometric completed and updated, but eligibility has not shown started since then. Anyone - or know someone - with something different than this?
Travel / Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Akannitommy: 4:19pm On Jul 11, 2021
Unfortunately for him, his own application was not treated even though he got expidited appointment. So there is no way to know how long it would take for passport to be produced. His application for renewal was necessitated by a refugee application which requested his valid passport after holding on to the expired one. So the Nigerian embassy asked him to produce the old one before they would attend to him. I guess that wasn't spelt out during the appointment process.

For the appointment, he simply sent the embassy an email explaining reasons why it is important he gets a renewed passport and they expidited his appointment. This was originally supposed to be in end of July but was brought forward about a month so he was able to go to the embassy about 2/3 weeks ago on a Saturday, I think. He attached the proofs of his claims to the email. So if you have a genuine reason why the expidited applies to you, I suggest you send them an email with the request and hope it works.

Eilenora:
Thanks so much. This helps a lot. Do you know if he has been able to get his passport back yet? They told me 4-6weeks when I called. Also does he know how the expedited works? When I called I was told the service wasnt available at this time but I suspect thats the official response they give everyone that asks but those that know how to get it do get it. I need that expedited to save hubbys application if not his SOWP wnt make sense at all. My permit expires this december.

Hi,

I just called my friend who went. He said it must be on appointment and those requested expidited service were sent a letter in advance. He wasn't sure if the electronic appointment system is being overridden or not though.

He advised that you take along every item requested - money order etc - as that often delay people who had to out to resolve those matter. The queue is not long as only those on appointment will/can come. He estimates between 30 minutes to and hour for the whole wait and capturing. But he feels that may even be too much.

Best.
Eilenora:
Thanks, thats what I decided to do, ride share. I have going sorted, i am 5hrs to Ottawa. Any idea how long it takes at the Embassy? This would help for proper planning for my return trip which has to be scheduled in advance.

Hi,

Ideally, the standard on the group for delayed applicants - someone with a previous refusal - is to apply for GCMS notes. Because, you just "stumbled on this group", I will explain briefly. Simply put, GCMS notes is the report of how your application (refused or not) was processed.
You will see the comments from Visa Officers about what informed their final decisions.

I think you should read through old posts and see similar cases as the reasons you were denied to start getting a sense of what may have gone wrong.

Ultimately, am not sure anyone can confidently advise you on your reapplication without seeing your GCMS notes. See old posts on how/who/where you can get your GCMS notes and how long that may take.

Cheers.

I think you need a good LOE to show what has changed since the last time you applied and now. How did you come accross the funds that has now become available to you and not before? Are you changing sponsorship type? If you can tidy up this aspect carefully and get experienced people from the group to guide, I think you would have a good chance the next time. Best of luck in advance.

Double Tuale as usual. You didn't disappoint. I knew you must have responded as well too, to this part. More grease to your elbow distinguished sir!

Lekiboboe:

While you await Hon. Akannitommy 's response, i would say, you have a good academic profile, coupled with your scientific publications.

At times/Most times, the reason most Prospective MSC/PHD applicants don't get response or get negative response from Professors is due to their ACADEMIC CV & their Cold Mail content (Mails sent to PROFESSORS to show interest in working in their research group/lab).

That being said, find attached a Document
Credits: Dr. Olumuyiwaayo of UBC, Canada

This document has a Highly Recommended Standard Academic CV & a non-generic , contextualised Cold mail template. This particular Academic CV and Cold Mail has successfully worked for many positively. That being said, use the attached ACADEMIC CV and Cold Mail template to revamp yours exactly the way it is.

In order to secure a potential supervisor (prof.), take your time & go through the contents in the link below , relate it to your field/Research Interests and do your due diligence

https://www.nairaland.com/6567181/canadian-student-visa-thread-part/175#102878887

Note: As a Prospective PHD student, don't limit yourself to one or five schools in Canada, widen your horizon as much as you can so you don't put all your eggs in one basket. There are loads of Canadian Universities with Fully-funded PHD research opportunities (OPOOOOR!!!!). That being said, check the link below for;

PHD in Medical Medical Microbiology & Immunology programs and Canadian Universities offering them (more than 10 Universities)

PHD in Parasitology and related programs & Canadian Universities offering them

PhD in Parasitology
McGill University, Quebec

PhD in gastrointestinal sciences
University of Calgary, Alberta

PhD - Pathology and Microbiology
University of Prince Edward Island, Prince Edward Island

I came across a post recently on TWITTER,
about PROFESSORS at the UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY, Canada who are looking for prospective MSC/PHD students, you might wanna check it out and see if there are Profs. whose Research Areas aligns with your Research Interests. If there is a match, do you due diligence on the Profs. you have a match with

https://vet.ucalgary.ca/future-students/graduate-students/graduate-student-positions

As a a Prospective STEM PH.D candidate, it's 75% certain you would be Fully-funded if a Prof. accepts you to his Laboratory/Research Group.

So against 2022, be very intentional about your PHD pursuit, & start now by doing serious research on Professors in Canadian Universities you have a match with (in terms of research) and use the above resources to package yourself before cold mailing them

Hi,

Thank you very much for your response. From your response, you already have a profile that can be guided and the area of interest is also one that would have some funding prospect. I expect our inhouse programs guru @Lekibobo to provide details of related programs, labs and profs who may fit your desired research path soon (if not already). Also, see mine and other posts about strategies for getting funded PhD from part 18 in early/mid 2020. There were alot of that sort of posts (very detailed) from part 18. Some were written by people from areas unrelated to yours but the general idea will be helpful too. So start by reading those old posts carefully.

Another advice for back-up plan is to consider a second related research masters. Don't get me wrong, this is simply to improve your chances of success in gaining admission. I have seen folks with similar profile get admitted for research masters and they got study permits then proceeded to PhD afterwards, while they are here. Your SOP for study permit will have to anticipate VOs concerns and address them upfront very carefully.

Target schools and labs where you may have the best chances of admission and funding. From my experience, the best schools for you may not be the most famous school in the field or country. At the end of the day, follow the money and go where you would be valued!

Please, get in touch via DM and we can continue to chat per your specific circumstances.

ensamy:

Thanks alot @Akan, I wanted a response like this before going into details.
I have an M.Sc in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology from the university of Calabar with CGPA of 4.2/5.0 and an Bachelors degree in Medical laboratory science CGPA of 3.7/5.0.
My research interests is on Molecular sequencing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. I àlso have two scientific publications on reputable international journals of high impact level. Though I have done some other work on molecular diagnosis.
My question is, many at times one doesn't get response from prospective PhD supervisors who may have interest towards my research interests.
Infact which universities do you suggest are easier for one to get a PhD supervisor with funding. Thank you.

For someone asking about PhD which is considered serious business, your question seems too vague. Sorry if I sounded too harsh, my apologies in advance!!

But if you want people to take you serious please you can do better. Please resend your enquiry with clearer details and you will get positive response(s).

I am particularly interested in responding to potential/prospective doctoral applicants because it could proof the easiest and cheapest way to Canada - am assuming they have good profile to get funded. Awaiting your questions all over please.

Hi,

For your wife, Memorial University of Newfoundland has one of the ridiculously cheap tuition in Canada. At least I know for MBA it is below $1,000/semester. But the Province is remote and laid back so alot of students who go there leave immediately after graduation. It may also be easier to get PR in NFL through Provincial Nomination and/or after graduation but there maybe requirement to live there for a few years. I have heard about New Brunswick too having low tuition rate -- others can chip in on this question.

Note only research masters and PhD get funded. Taught masters are rarely/never funded or maybe very poorly. It even gets worse with a finance/business major. The logic is that you are studying the course to make money first so you can aswell invest/pay for it yourself unlike sciences/tech that may not necessariy be commercial in nature (at least not immediately). It is assumed these latter courses especially their research versions are likely to impact the society more.

Your own profile looks very interesting too but for the HND part. If you can get a Msc in Forensics (Crime Lab Science etc) you may be able to also get a study visa. You have the background and related work experience. If you find a good lab that needs your own unique skills, it is not impossible to get some funding for a research masters but still your HND profile may pose a challenge in this regard. Consult more on this and other fora to see what schools can offer you admission with your profile. It is not impossible, may be hectic but worth trying.

You both should try a multi-prong approach for the eventual benefits of your family.

It shall end in praises. Ire oh!

Based on her profile above, which courses will you advice her to do?

Which Canadian universities should she apply to where she can get some funding or a full scholarship for her programme?

We have a son who is two months old. Will she be allowed to travel with him for her studied?

What are her chances of getting and mission and a study visa?

2. I have an HND in microbiology plus a PGD in criminology. I work as a security professional. I am open to studying a security related course. Please can someone advice me on what to do.

I know someone who had appointment about 2/3 months ago just the resurgence of Covid-19 (3rd wave or so) and then the embassy shutdown. He was invited about 2 weeks ago. he drove from Montreal to Ottawa (2 hours away) and had his biometric same day then returned. I have heard of people doing ride-share too, pointing to option via FB Marketplace. So I would say it depends on your distance from Ottawa and contacts in the Capital. No, Saturday is not unusual because this person also had his on a Saturday 2 weeks ago when they reopened

I suggest you hasten up renewing your passport, TRV and SP. Request GCMS notes to track your hubby SOWP application (you may need to do this multiple times while your own renewal is active) and once you have some approval of your own SP/TRV, send in a webform for your hubby application to show appproval of your own extension. I think your extension will enjoy faster/quicker application period because its student and we are prioritized above all others at the moment. It simply now depends on how quickly you are technically able to apply for passport extension since every other thing relies on that.

He and any of your dependents who gets approved will get TRV with same end date as your own and same for work permit. It will be based on your own records and status in Canada.

Eilenora:
So will they give him 5 years TRV and duration of work permit at POE will then be tied to mine or will they give him just a few months on his TRV despite having a new 5years passport?

Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 19 by Akannitommy: 12:38am On Jul 01, 2021
I don't think this is true for all schools as policy on this subject differ substantially.

In my school (Concordia University), I was still back home without a study permit but already had approval when I registered/enrolled. Infact, by the time I did, I was already too late to do it personally so my departmental graduate program assistant had to help complete the process on the back end.

In the current case of my niece who got admitted for Winter 2022 just 2 weeks ago (12th June) into a Bsc program at University of Saskatchewan, the school already invited her to register for her courses (6-months) ahead of resumption. This girl has not written IELTS, not booked medical, and I am not even 100% sure the father has made up his mind to fund the thing. She has not started gathering application materials for TRV/Study permit.

So situation differ and as common on this platform, there is never a one-size-fit-all universal explanation to most questions. Context matter!

You need a study permit to register in school fam, I graduated from humber college and a study permit is needed in order to register for classes.

Hi,

Congrats on your visa. How long it takes depends on the queue, the complexity of each matter and most importantly the CBSA officers in charge. It took sevreal hours (6-hrs I think) for me back in December 2020 because there were over a thousand people arriving at Montreal airport same day and/or about same time, I did. For some it took minutes from the time they clear the preliminaries to getting their study permit issued.

I think things are relaxed now unlike the peak of travel season when I landed but as covid-19 restrictions are relaxed, the summer wear on and fall approach, travel season will pick up once again.

I also suggest you should find a way to get a renewed passport soonest (before you travel). You may not be able to travel until late November or from December since program starts in January. Reason you should get another passport is so you are not turned back for passport with less than 6-months validity. Once you do this, and travel within an acceptable window for international student, you should be good. The rest is cool according to my Oga @JustMellow

Hello RichieJayy,

This is no issue. Facilitate entry before the expiry of your TRV and get your SP issued. Once inside Canada, with a valid study permit and an expired TRV, you will still legally have resident status.

For international students, the TRV is only to be able to board a flight and facilitate entry into Canada to get the SP issued.

It is only when you intend to travel out of Canada that you will need to apply to renew your TRV to be able to re-enter. As you know, the SP is not a travel document as facilitating entering into Canada with just the SP is based on the sole discretion of the CBSA officer to grant or refuse entry.

Best of Luck[/quote]

You are absolutely right on that but that is valid only if no application was submitted. Since the agent never released access to the supposed application, there is a small possibility the agent didn't inform applicant about biometric request? It is a small chance but not totally impossible. I would follow up just to be sure there are no surprises.

KikkyQ:
Could this really been an issue? If she has not done her biometrics, how can the former application be traced to her?

Hi,

I sympathize with you but be composed in your next step. Let me give you one instance why you should follow-up with the agent. Not to claim a refund BUT to clarify on the application.

If the agent did apply (which I doubt) and mentioned that you have a sibling but you actually have two. It could also be you saying no previous refusal but you were refused and the agent didn't say so. If you "re-apply" and state that you have two siblings, or you were never refused, those are discrepancies which could cost you a 5-year ban or worse.

That is why you should be aware of what really happened. The best case situation is that no application was actually lodged then you can start on a clean sheet.

Best.

Thank you all, i really appreciate this. I'm not new to being scammed. Its already fashioned in the fabric of this nation which is one of the reasons we want to leave. No problems about getting the money back. I will get all necessary information and start afresh. Thanks guys

Hi,

I think your question is a bit unclear to get the right and helpful response. But from the little I understand in your post, here is my two cent:

Can you confirm that you sent the passport already? Have you received back your passport with or without a visa stamp?

I think the image of letter you shared seem like an introduction letter which every PPR receipient gets once their visa stamp is fixed on the passport; most times, even before the passport is returned to you. The thing to be issued on arrival is a study permit which is different from the visa stamp.

Also, there is nothing to be scared about convincing the immigration officer. This is a routine process everyone go through - even those who are travelling on non-student visa. The logic is that holding a visa is not a license that you will be allowed to enter the country that issued it; that decision is at the discretion of the immigration officer.

Best.

blackedwin:
I salute everyone,my wife was asked to send her passport 2weeks ago we just received a letter saying Visa would be issued on arrival. Pls house what happens on arrival and what documents would she have to go with to convince the immigration officer at the POE.

In addition and while you work on getting another admission of the said agent addmission renewed, I will say don't apply for study visa without knowing what really transpired last year. If you have to arrest or fight the agent, do something. Reason is if they did apply on your behalf and a decision was received or not, you should be aware. If you submit a new application without knowing what happened, you could walk into a 5-year ban or worse with your eyes wide open. So be aware! Get enough info out of the agent for you to request a GCSM notes at the least. If possible, get copies of all the past application and documents submitted in your name. Remember, it is your name they used to apply, assuming they actually did.

SweetJJ:
This is where you need to work. We cannot really help you since we do not know if you are going for Bsc, msc,PhD, pgd, Etc. Use Google and do school search of the course you want to study.

While doing so, bear the tuition ( as per your budget), and other things in mind. Get admission then come back to this thread for study permit advice. I guess there is another thread for admission.

Then use the search button and search for documents for study permit. Feel free to ask your question if you get confused along the line. For now, I would say, do your homework. Success in your search.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about this experience but I think this is simply a temporary delay. I suspect the reason for change of mind is that the Prof found 2 PhD students although you would otherwise be qualified for the research position as Msc student. In my opinion, you don't have to overflog a dead horse though. No need for emotional appeal because it won't work with a Prof in Canada or outside Nigeria.

Redirect your effort to multiple Profs. in similar programs at other schools and also be ready to push your resumption plans forward. Doing this means improving your chances: don't target only one school as that could fail. There is no harm in having multiple offers and then choosing one (best) of them. Also, try to start your contact with these Profs. early which I think you did and with your experience on this, am sure you will be better able to manage the process going.

Best of luck next time.

Hello everyone. Please I'm in a fix & I need your advice cry.

Prior to my application for a research-based msc programme in Canada, I reached out to a prof who confirmed she'd be taking in 2 graduate students and also confirmed that our research interests aligned but wouldn't take anybody yet till the academic committee and potential supervisors reviewed all applications.

4 months after applying (may 2021), I heard nothing from the school. So, I mailed the graduate co-ordinator inquiring about the outcome of my application and the professor replied instead.

The prof told me she was finalizing her research group for fall and asked if I'd be able to talk over zoom. We had the meeting and we talked about my research proposal and said she'd be taking me in and giving me the emails of her other students and would speak to the graduate co-ordinator about funding as I am an international student.

With her word, I assumed I was in only for me to again mail the graduate co-ordinator in June (as time for visa application was going) and then be told the prof isn't taking in students again.

I was shocked and asked if there was a mix-up. I mailed the supervisor and she said she was sorry and that I misunderstood her. That she was torn as I am an excellent fit for her lab but that she is already taking in 2 phd students and now at her maximum capacity.

I mailed the graduate co-ordinator and asked if it was possible to switch to course work instead. She said that though my application had already been denied (cos of the prof), I would be considered.

But now the thing is next week is July and I don't even know when I would hear from the school. Plus neither I nor my close relatives have my school fees. I thought I would get in through research which is why I applied for only research programmes.

I met the minimum requirement of 75% btw . Had 82% in undergrad.

Does anybody have an idea how I can "appeal" to the professor or go about the situation?
