Politics / Re: Apc Favours Oni, Opeyemi, Adeyeye For Ekiti Senatorial Contests by AngryNijerian: 7:27am On Sep 03, 2018
yns4real:
*Rasaki to lose out despite defection to APC
*Osinkolu insists on seeking senatorial aspiration

Gboyega Akinsanmi in Lagos and Victor Ogunje in Ado Ekiti

Ahead of its primaries scheduled to hold this month, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has conceded senatorial tickets in Ekiti State to its former National Deputy Chairman, Chief Segun Oni, ex- Commissioner for Information & Strategy in Lagos State, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele and former National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic (PDP), Prince Adedayo Adeyeye, THISDAY can report.

By implication, the concession has already cast pall on the aspiration of Sen. Fatimat Raji-Rasaki to return to the Senate in 2019 despite her decision to defect to the APC at the height of internal rift that plagued the Ekiti PDP before the just concluded governorship election in the state.

Multiple sources at national and state level revealed this development to THISDAY at the weekend, which they justified on the need to pacify Oni, Bamidele and Adeyeye considering the role they played to ensure the APC and its candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi win the July 14 governorship election.

One of the sources said while the governor-elect favoured Opeyemi for Ekiti Central Senatorial District, the APC had already resolved to nominate Oni and Adeyeye in Ekiti North and South respectively.

However, according to the source, the APC will still hold free and fair primaries in the three senatorial districts in line with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). All senatorial aspirants are free to participate in the primaries despite the concession.

He explained that Fayemi was not oblivious of the impending crisis that might erupt in the Ekiti APC if the political gladiators “are accorded with due recognition after working for his victory in the last election. Opeyemi, for instance, paid supreme price just to ensure the victory of the APC and Fayemi.”

Another source confirmed that Fayemi had “to make the concession before the governorship election because it was evident he would not be able to defeat the PDP candidate, Prof. Olusola Kolapo due to the overbearing political influence of the incumbent governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose in the state.”

Even though his former Chief of Staff, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu had indicated interest to contest senatorial race in Ekiti South, the source said Fayemi would not support him because he had already conceded the three senatorial nominations to Oni, Bamidele and Adeyeye.

The source confirmed that rather than contesting the senatorial race, Oni had already given the slot to his die-hard adherent, Sen. Olubunmi Adetunmbi, who occupied the seat between 2011 and 2015.

Unlike the case of Oni, the source revealed that both Bamidele and Adeyeye “have accepted to contest the senatorial race with the support of the APC National Deputy Chairman, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo.”

An entirely different source revealed the plan to reward former Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Femi Bamisile, who was the Director of Contact & Mobilisation of the Fayemi Campaign
Council.

Apart from Bamisile, the source disclosed that Fayemi might also pacify other governorship aspirants including Dr. Wole Oluyede and Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, who had declared to contest the state legislative race.

The source said: “A lot of concessions have been made to stabilise our party. But Fayemi seems not ready to gamble with the 26 Assembly members. He wanted those that will be loyal to him because he has just four years. He may choose not less than 20 of the would-be state lawmakers.”

Despite this political permutation, an APC chieftain in the state, Dr. Olusegun Osinkolu yesterday clarified that Fayemi’s victory would serve as a catalyst to his senatorial ambition rather than stalling it.

Osinkolu, who is seeking to represent Ekiti North in the Senate in 2019, said the fact that he came from the same local government with Fayemi would not serve as an impediment to his senatorial aspiration.

He added that he “is still pursuing his aspiration with vigour and that he stands a good

prognosis to get the party’s ticket and win the election based on his acceptability among the members of the party.

He said the constitution of the APC does not foreclose people’s aspiration based on territorial location for any elective position provided such aspirant is acceptable to his party and the electorate.

“Fayemi’s victory in the last election will help in propelling my victory if given the party’s ticket. Our party members are ready to give me their nods to get the ticket, having laboured hard to launder the APC in the past.

“I was one of the few heroes that fought the party’s course during the long drawn legal battle culminating in Dr Fayemi’s first coming as a governor of this state. I contested for Senatorial seat twice in Ekiti North and lost narrowly to Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Politics / Re: Buhari Accuses Media Of Uninformed Reportage Of Farmers, Herders’ Crises by AngryNijerian: 1:53am On Sep 03, 2018

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday said he was not afraid of free and fair elections in 2019.

Also, the President faulted the Nigerian media reportage of the farmers, harders clashes in the country, saying the coverage had been largely uninformed.

He said as a beneficiary of credible elections, he would ensure that his administration organised free and fair elections.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said this in Beijing during an interactive session he had with members of the Nigerian community in China.

Buhari is in the Asian country to participate in the 7th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation scheduled to hold from September 3 to 4 in Beijing.

The President promised that he would ensure that the 2019 polls, under his watch, would be free, fair and credible.

He pledged that the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agents would allow Nigerians eligible to vote in the next general elections to freely elect candidates of their choice.

Buhari said, “I have no fear about free and fair elections because that is what brought me to the present position. I know what I went through and very few Nigerians could boast of trying four times (contesting the Presidency).

“Those interested in participating in the elections must get their PVCs, register in their constituencies and elect anybody of their choice across ethnicity and religion.

“The Nigerian police, law enforcement agencies and INEC must respect the right of the people to express their wishes.”

Citing recent elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi states, the President said the country had made progress when compared to elections conducted in the past years.

On security issues, the President reaffirmed that his government had succeeded in curtailing Boko Haram insurgents in the country

Politics / Re: Only Atiku Can Restructure Nigeria- Afenifere by AngryNijerian: 1:50am On Sep 03, 2018
NgeneUkwenu:
Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has reiterated its resolve to support the candidacy of former vice president and frontline presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, come 2019, saying no greater champion of restructuring from the North than Atiku.

The group made its position known on Sunday when it hosted Atiku in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, a leader of the group and prodemocracy veteran, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, stated that the group has taken time to think through all the aspirants and looking at the dossier of Atiku, that there is a general consensus that his desire for restructuring is genuine. “You (Atiku) have been writing about restructuring over a decade ago. You gave me your commitment to restructure Nigeria within six months in one of our meetings several years ago. “When people talk about good governance and promise good road, agricultural development and all that, we just laugh.

There must be a country first before any development. Nigeria can not have peace and stability without restructuring. “We know that there is no greater champion of restructuring from the North than Atiku.

In his remark, Atiku Abubakar stated that his commitment to restructuring is absolute and this position has once gotten him a query when he was vice president. “In all my political career, I have not seen Nigeria in a state of danger that may affect its existence as a country as at today. This is because – just like a house- if you get a faulty foundation that building is not likely to last. This is where we find ourselves. “As a vice president, I came to Lagos then to discuss why we should restructure this country so that we can survive and provide leadership for West Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. That lecture earned me a query from my boss then.

I can assure you that I will restructure Nigeria within six months of my administration,” he said. Present at the gathering includes former Senator Femi Okunronmu, Professor Akitoye, former Minister Adeseye Ogunlewe amongst others.

Politics / Re: Why Former President Is Ready To Return To The Classroom by AngryNijerian: 1:45am On Sep 03, 2018
emeka2254:
The former president, who left office in 2015, expressed gratitude to the institution for the honour done to him.

He said: “I want to specially thank the Senate of the University for considering my family worthy of double honours, to wit: the conferment of the honour of Icon of Democracy on me and the naming of the new Automated University Library after my wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.

“I always attach so much importance to any recognition coming from home because I strongly believe that no prize commands higher value than the one given by the beneficiary’s direct constituency.”
Jonathan stated that the visit is like homecoming for him, as a former lecturer in the Rivers State College of Education, which was upgraded to a full-fledged university.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his readiness to return to the classroom if offered such opportunity, especially at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.

Jonathan disclosed this yesterday while speaking at the 35th and 36th combined convocation ceremony of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt where he was conferred with “Icon of Democracy” award.

The former president said: “Let me also say that I had good job satisfaction here, compared to all the other places I have worked. I know that the only major challenge academic staff face is with the reward system, considering the fact that as a nation, we are yet to get to the point where we pay our teachers the wages they deserve.

“However, for all the hindrances teachers face, they derive a fulfilling experience and satisfaction from the special relationship they cultivate with their students. This is because bringing up the young ones is very rewarding in a very distinct manner. The bond, friendship and sense of loyalty are eternal.

“Even today, the way my former students regard and relate with me is different from the way my fellow politicians relate with me, even those I mentored.”
Politics / Re: Saraki Was Destroying APC Because Of His Presidential Ambition.says Oshiomhole, by AngryNijerian: 12:44pm On Sep 02, 2018
Antoeni:
Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says the presidential ambition of Senate President Bukola Saraki was destroying the ruling party.
Oshiomhole said Saraki’s recent declaration to contest the presidential election has vindicated him on his comments in the wake of his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former Edo state governor said Saraki is among unprincipled politicians who have selfish ambitions and are unconcerned about the wellbeing of Nigerians.
He made the comments while speaking to leaders of the APC in Kwara state on Friday.
Simon Ebegbulem, his chief press secretary, quoted him as saying: “When I was saying that all these defections is not about APC but the personal ambition of these people, they took hired writers to say I was being too hard. But Saraki’s declaration has vindicated me.
“Thank God he has moved on, because his inordinate ambition was almost destroying our party, but he has failed.
“These are not principled politicians but bread-and-butter politicians who can go the extra mile to pursue their selfish ambitions and never think about the well-being of Nigerians.
“As things stands today, APC remains the darling of the Nigerian people because PDP is the vomit of yesterday and our people will not chew it back today; not under three and half years. People have not forgotten and people will never forget.
“In fact, a senior palace chief in Nigeria said this generation of Nigerians will not forgive the PDP in a hurry. Even to say you want to forgive, you must do reparation.
“The damage they did to our economy, the damage they did to our electoral process, even the culture of rigging was institutionalised by them. They introduced do or die politics.
“They are the ones buying weapons for young people to go into thuggery while their own children are schooling abroad. They introduced all these vices.”
Oshihomhole urged Kwara politicians not to put their personal interests above the interest of the people of the state. He added that the state must be retrieved from Saraki’s grip. Saraki was destroying APC because of his Presidential ambition, thank God he left, says Oshiomhole.
Politics / Re: The Restructuring Debate Or 2019 Election? by AngryNijerian: 6:53pm On Sep 01, 2018
otosa:
Since the return of democratic governance in Nigeria, restructuring of the country has been one issue that has refused to go away. Despite all efforts by successive governments to wish it away, the issue has refused to die. Restructuring, as simple as the word looks, means different things to different parts of the country.

While to people of the South-South it may mean control of natural resources by the federating units and payment of royalties to the centre, it also means the decongestion of the centre and assigning more powers to the federating units to the South-West and South-East.

The latter definition also makes some sense to the people of the Middle Belt region. But the greatest opposition to the idea has always come from the core northern zones of North-East and North-West, where opponents of the idea see it as a ploy by some zones, particularly the South-East, to fragment Nigeria.

To those who are opposed to restructuring, the unity of Nigeria was much more important than any other motive attached to such reconfiguration of the entity. Since the pre-independence days, Nigeria has toyed with different constitutional changes.

From the parliamentary system of government in the First Republic to the presidential system adopted since the Second Republic, the country has laboured to bring forth a state where every citizen would feel belong and equal. But the facts on the ground show that the country has moved from one that was fast developing after independence to one that has retrogressed, especially since after the overthrow of the Shehu Shagari government in 1983.

Since then, various governments, both military and civilian, have made efforts at amending the constitution to be more suitable for the country. But, obviously, sore thumbs have continued to crop up all over the country, indicating that all is not well with the administration of the country and its present set up.
Soon after the return of democracy in 1999, President Olusegun Obasanjo faced his first major challenge – the quest to introduce Sharia in some states of the North.

Although, Nigeria constitutionally is a secular state where there is no state religion, some governors in the North then found it expedient to implement full Sharia in their states.
That drew anger from the Southern states, even though the governors in the affected northern states then argued that the laws were meant for Muslims only. Similar, but different modes of agitations rose in the South-South, with demand to control proceeds of oil from the zone – the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy. That, of course, led to what is today known as the Niger Delta agitation that ended up with the granting of amnesty to youths of the region by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

The South-East had its own agitation in the mould of separatist groups, such as the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB) and its ‘younger brother,’ the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The South-West has made restructuring one of the bases for their support for any government. This is why Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, during the week, attacked Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, over his opposition to restructuring.

South-West believes more in fiscal federalism and loose federating units, with a less powerful centre. One thing that is not in doubt from all agitations is that majority of Nigerians are not satisfied with the state of affairs of the country.

Be it resource control, policing, defence, revenue sharing, state creation or mode of government, there is almost a consensus that something has to give in on the way the country is currently running. The name or manner of agitation might be different, but the language is the same – the country is presently unwieldy, with so much power concentrated at the centre.
The restructuring might come in the form of state police, new revenue sharing formula, return to zones or regions or devolution of powers from the centre. We recall that in 2014, former President Goodluck Jonathan had set up the national conference, which came up with a comprehensive report.

The conference was attended by all segments of the country. The report of that conference, which was generally applauded then, has been on the shelves, gathering dust.
We also know that one of the major planks of the support given to APC in 2015 by the South-West was the promise of the party to embark on restructuring if it won power. When the question of restructuring became hot, the party went ahead to set up a committee headed by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, which made recommendations on the restructuring issue.
That report is also on the shelves now. There have been several of such in the past, made by different committees set up by different governments.

We are of the view that the issue of restructuring should be a major issue going into 2019. We do not subscribe to the break-up of Nigeria by any means. But we believe that the current model being operated by the country is not sustainable. There are several instances that support that assertion. The recent impasse at the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) that almost crippled several states is a case in point.
We believe that every state in the country or, at worst, every zone, can manage itself, if power is devolved. Corruption and tension will also reduce when there is less power at the centre. By that, Nigeria would join other advanced democracies, who we copied their models, in having a workable system.
