Politics / Nigeria’s Federation Still Built On Falsehood 61 Years After Independence, Gani by ArewaWife(m): 5:44pm On Sep 30, 2021
The Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, on Thursday, lamented that it is unfortunate that Nigeria’s federation is still built on falsehood 61 years after independence.

He noted that the country has the potential to be great again if the regions are given the autonomy to develop at their own pace.

He said such would allow the states to build their security architectures and their respective economies to enhance a true federation.

Adams made his position known in a statement titled, ‘At 61, Nigeria’s federation built on falsehood – Gani Adams’, signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi.

Adams
The statement partly read, “Many would, no doubt, describe Nigeria as the giant of Africa, but the irony of our present situation in the country is that at 61, Nigeria’s federation was built on falsehood, and that has affected the entire system.

“For instance, the spate of insecurity has reached an alarming state with bandits killing and maiming Nigerians every day.

“The senseless killings, banditry and kidnappings across the land have been a major challenge for the present administration, and we cannot but call for Nigeria to be restructured along regionalism where all the six states in the South-West will control their fortunes and have their destinies in their own hands. Insecurity can only be tackled when each region has the autonomy to control their security architectures.”

“The beauty of this is that each of the regions under this federation is blessed naturally with innate natural resources, solid minerals and agriculture can also do the magic for the less-productive region.”

Politics / Independence Day: Ram Nath Kovind Congratulates Nigeria by ArewaWife(m): 4:05pm On Sep 30, 2021
President Ram Nath Kovind of India has congratulated the government and people of Nigeria on the occasion of the 61st Independence Anniversary on October 1.

The President’s spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, in a statement on Thursday, in Abuja said the Indian president’s congratulatory message was conveyed in a letter addressed to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

In the congratulatory letter, Kovind extended his best wishes to the Nigerian leader as well as the continued prosperity of the country.

‘‘India and Nigeria have warm, friendly and deep-rooted ties. Our multifaceted relations have further been expanded and strengthened by regular and cordial engagements at various levels. India and Nigeria have strong relations. Despite challenges during the pandemic, our economic relations have gained strength.

‘‘Please accept my best wishes for Your Excellency’s good health and well-being as well as for the continued prosperity and progress of the friendly people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ Kovind said.

Politics / Democracy Hasn’t Yielded Gains Since 1999 Because Ex-dictators Become Presidents by ArewaWife(m): 3:51pm On Sep 30, 2021
Foremost human rights activist and President of Centre for Change, Joe Okei-Odumakin, has said that civilian rule has not translated into democratic governance since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 because those in power trample on the fundamental human rights and civil liberties of citizens.

She also lamented that two of the four elected Presidents Nigeria have had since the return from the dark era of military despotism are ex-dictators.

Okei-Odumakin stated this in a statement on Thursday titled, ‘Another Independence anniversary is here: Any cause for cheers?’ on the occasion of the 61st Anniversary of Nigeria which attained independence in 1960.

Olusegun Obasanjo, a former military head of state between 1976 and 1979, was Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 1999 to 2007 while the incumbent President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who was military head of state from 1983 to 1985, returned as elected President in 2015.

The two other Presidents since 1999 are civilians — Umaru Yar’adua (2007 to 2010) and Goodluck Jonathan (2010 to 2015).

In her statement, the activist, who is the widow of the late Afenifere scribe, Yinka Odumakin, said, “The Fourth Republic, which began in 1999, is the longest stretch of civilian rule that this country has witnessed. Unfortunately, rather than this calling for cheers, it has become the harbinger of despondency, despair, disappointment and frustration.

“To start with, since 1999 civilian rule has not translated into democratic governance. Democratic and fundamental human rights and civil liberties have been trampled by the powers-that-be. It is instructive that two out of four so-called civilian presidents had been erstwhile military dictators.”

She lamented that “insecurity which started like a joke in one corner of the country in1999 has now become a Frankenstein monster that has enveloped the entire country”.

Okei-Odumakin added, “Going by every parameter and measurement indexes, the economy is at its lowest ebb ever: high cost of living, galloping inflation, mind-blowing unemployment rate, decrepit infrastructure and a crippling debt burden with little or nothing to show for it.

“A vast majority of Nigerians are crying for restructuring. They are insisting that Nigeria cannot continue to wobble and fumble like it has done these past many years. There is the need to tinker with Nigeria – and to mend it.

“It may be, then, that it would survive and that this Independence anniversary or the next will not be its last as many have predicted. A stitch in time saves nine!

“The times call for solemn reflection and not any ostentatious or flamboyant celebration that runs counter to the mood and circumstance of majority of Nigerians.

“Let the government show sensitivity to the plight of Nigerians. Let the leadership rise above petty sentiments and primordial interests to salvage the country.

“That, then, will be the most befitting independence gift that the leaders can give to the people on this occasion of the country’s 61st anniversary.”

Politics / Okowa Assents To Bill Banning Open Grazing In Delta by ArewaWife(m): 3:42pm On Sep 30, 2021
Ban on open grazing takes effect in Delta State, as Governor Ifeanyi Okowa assented to the Anti-Open Grazing Bill on Thursday.

Tagged ‘Delta State Livestock, Breeding, Rearing and Marketing Regulation Bill 2021,’ the bill was signed into law by the governor 10 days after it scaled the third reading and was passed by the State House of Assembly during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sherrif Oborevwori on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

The law prohibits the carrying of firearms, either licenced or otherwise, by residence or individuals in the state; just as it seeks to address the arbitrary rearing and movements of livestock in the state.

Governor Okowa also signed the Delta State Urban and Regional Planning Bill 2020 into law.

The Bills had earlier been presented to the governor for assent by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who was accompanied by his Deputy, Christopher Ochor; and other principal officers of the state legislature.

Speaking after signing the two bills into law, Okowa called on the Federal Government to assist interested farmers to establish ranches across the country.

He remarked that the two laws were very important to Delta State, stressing that the State Livestock Breeding, Rearing and Marketing Regulations Law had taken a new life of its own in the country.

He maintained that the laws were not enacted to witch-hunt anybody but to encourage people to live with one another and respect others’ view, noting that with the passage, the Delta State House of Assembly had done the state proud.

Okowa recalled that the Southern Governors met and took certain decisions which they believed was in the best interest of the nation.

“Today is quite a remarkable day in the history of this state because we signed two important bills into law this morning.

“We believe that it is in the best interest of security, we believe that it is in the best interest of ensuring food security and that it will help us to ensure that we are able to cause people from across this nation who will find themselves outside their own states inhabiting in Delta State to live with Deltans in a peaceful and respectable manner with each other having respect for each other.

“We believe as the Southern Governors had stated that we must start to look into other ways of ensuring that we are able to breed and that we are able to rare our cattle and other livestock in such a manner that is acceptable in modern times.

“We believe that this is something workable, many times it is difficult for people to embrace change, but I believe that the world all over is changing by the day and if you find that change is going to bring peace, if you find that change is going to bring development and even economic enhancement, it should truly be embraced.

“I think that it is time for our nation to depart from the old ways and to look into the future, ensuring that we do things in the best way for development.

“We must encourage best actions to be taken towards ensuring that there is peaceful coexistence within the various ethnic nationalities in Nigeria and the various states and also ensuring that we are able to do our businesses in such a manner that is respectable and I think that is what this law stands for,” the governor declared.

West Brom fan jailed for racist abuse of midfielder Romaine Sawyers
Agency Report
30 September 2021
Kindly share this story:

Gavel

A fan of English Championship side West Brom was on Thursday jailed for eight weeks after being found guilty of racially abusing one of the club’s own players.

Simon Silwood posted a message saying Romaine Sawyers should win the “Baboon d’Or” — a sarcastic reference to the Ballon d’Or trophy for the world footballer of the year — after his team’s 5-0 defeat by Manchester City at the Hawthorns on January 26.

Silwood denied the offence, telling police that the message was “stupid, not racial”, adding autocorrect had changed the word “buffoon” to “baboon”.

The 50-year-old, who has been banned for life by the club, was convicted last month at Walsall Magistrates’ Court, in central England, after District Judge Briony Clarke ruled he had meant the post to be offensive.

The court heard Sawyers, currently on loan at Stoke City, was left feeling “harassed, alarmed and distressed” after reading it.

Passing sentence on Silwood at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Judge Clarke said: “There is no place for racism or racist abuse online. This clearly in my view crosses the custody threshold.”

Clarke added: “I assess the remorse you have for your actions as very minimal indeed.

“In my view, it (the offence) falls into the category of greatest harm. We have to accept it had a wider impact and a substantial impact on Mr Sawyers.”

Earlier this month, another football fan was handed a suspended jail term for posting racist comments on social media, blaming three black players for England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

Scott McCluskey singled out Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho in an abusive Facebook message after they missed their penalties in a shootout.
