When i started this thread in 2018, my aim was to make us know, if we work hard in any Job we have, we can actually make enough money to take care of ourselves. I haven't filed my 2019 tax info yet, but i will post my 2018 tax info. In 2018 the only Job i worked was as a Security guard in 4 different companies. For those talking about nurses, i wont even get to that. I know PSW thats made over $100k a year before taxes. My sister is a nurse, she currently has over CAD$100k sitting in her account. 80k was from her earnings, 20k was from her student loan grant portion. You all know i always speak with facts and proof.
CutieKing:
But why are people claiming audio income on this thread ??.
someone who makes 5k after tax has an average gross of around 8k.you pay federal tax, state tax, social security, Medicare, union due, retirement and host of others depending on your circumstances.
Besides why is everyone talking about overtime as if its statutory obligations?.does every job requires overtime?.
People should be able to tell themselves the truth somehow and stop this fantasy.
Besides is community support work a professional job??.I doubt.

I dont know why sometimes we just talk anyhow. Chikwe is an employee of the World health Organization. He was in China as a delegation WHO sent to China to access the spread of the Corona Virus. When he returned the Nigerian Government asked him to head the Nigerian CDC. Quarantine is just a normal process for anyone who visited an area that has substantial spread of the virus.

I think someone just clarified it. Permanent residents get 10 years. My wife was denied US visa twice in 2018 when I was applying for her canadian PR. Once she landed in Canada middle of 2018, she applied for US visa after 2 weeks and got 10 year visa too. Nigerians have really suffered in Nigeria.
drhammed:

Sorry to ask bro,

Are you still using Nigerian passport? I mean you applied for US visa with Nigerian passport and got 10yrs Visa. Or is it another visa type and not B1/B2?. My opinion is that, US only grants 2yrs visa (B1/B2 category) for Nigerians (atleast that's what I and friends that I know have) even though I applied and got it in Canada.

PS: I'm not here to say you're lying or sort of. I just want to learn from that and perhaps I can pick something from it.

Yeah I may have made 100k, but I worked over 5000 hours in a year, That is so much. I wanna make 100k without working that much, that's why I am going to school. My sister started off in the warehouse, then moved to health care jobs. She just finished her nursing degree. And she wants to do her nursing masters. The point is, DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET TO THE POINT WHERE YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. According to our naija brethren, HUSSLE OOOO

Because I used to work in Shell, and didnt have the courage to leave Nigeria to an uncertain Canada, until my PR eligibility period started running out. If my PR eligibility period ran out (2 years in Canada out of your first five years), I would have had to reapply again. And looking at a lot of Canada threads on nairaland, it wil be stupid of me to lose my PR status especially at a time Nigeria as a country is failing. So I dumped Shell and relocated.

Kudos to you but if you were a PR since 2014 how come you moved in 2016?

You made a lot of valid points and i support you. But just a clarification. I never said everybody will make six figures, i have friends who do, but they work coporate jobs. But what i said i made, i made. The kind of shifts i put in is not meant for everyone. The fact is that very few people can put in such shifts cos you will have no life, BUT IT IS POSSIBLE and its just for a short time. I had a short stint in Lululemon working as a network engineer in Vancouver, and no one in the team made less than 90k, and my team was 90% indian too. Canada has very good paying jobs, but dont wait for those jobs, get something doing while waiting for those jobs.
mofedamijo:
Please i want to beg Nigerians to always read, and also do their own research, that's the best form of Education, having said that, what this op posted so far doesn't add up by 2%, if you must make six figures in North America, then you must be in a very high paying job, listen to me and listen attentively, no matter how much bonus you get, if you're not in a certain sector or certain companies, you can't make six figures let alone save six figures, and even if your boss is your father, the board of the company and state have specific salary structure. Even if your father gifts you over $10,000, you will be taxed, so i don't know where the op got all these figures he posted. $16/hr job will never give you six figures, even if you decide not to sleep for 365 days a year. Secondly, you have a limited amount of hours you can work, even if your body is made of rock.

Thirdly, nobody envies him or anything, but Nigerians must be told the truth at all times, and you should also do your own research. we have Nigerians who left 1.0million naira job, just because they were told Canada pays like crazy, be wise my people, Canada doesnt pay like crazy, do your own research, you find someone who is a highly skilled individual working in Walmart, why, no job for his/her skills out there. I have so many Indian friends in Canada, gurus in I.T, they all left India where they are well paid, only for them to land in Canada and no job.

Don' get me wrong people, Nigerians make it out there, but to be sincere with you, maybe few percentages of them, the rest a living basic lives, am not here to argue, am stating facts.

For me, the best country in the world is the country where your dreams come true, wherever you make it in life is your best country. I have met some Nigerian nurses in Namibia and other African countries, and believe you me, they earn over $3000/month, live in beautiful houses where the rent is less than $350, low tax, and they travel anywhere when they are on leave. To let you know, not so many Nigerians even earn $30,000/annum in U.S AND CANADA, these are facts.......may God take us all to our promise land, if your promise land is in congo, believe you me, you will make it better than folks in Europe, U.S or even Canada.

For me, i have traveled a bit in life, and God has been faithful, however, i will rather be a Dangote or Kofi Annan than be eager to get the blue passport, there are certain position you get to in life, even the embassy awaits your arrival, am not a blue passport fanatic, if it comes my way, fine, but i want to make a stamp on the world, and so my take-off point doesn't have to be Canada or U.S. God bless US all.

Hey guys, I havent been available because i moved from my former city to Toronto, and the move was really stressful. I am taking a graduate degree at Ryerson University, my second degree here. I am not in the habit of defending myself about my facts. They are facts. Earlier in this thread i did post a few of my paystubs just to buttress the fact about my earnings. I set a target for myself for last year and i met it. I set one for this year, i couldn't meet it because my hours where cut drastically. I have set another for next year, and i will meet it. I will keep saying it, it is absolutely possible to make 100k on a so-called menial job, but like i said, you have to put in a lot of overtime and sometimes augment with a second job. This is a picture of my tax statement from 2018. Although, i have learnt now that you have to be smart about making money in Canada. Because of my earnings from last year, i wasn't approved for a student loan, so i am paying for my degree from my pocket. My sisters were both approved for loans and grants when they applied for school. My elder sister just got a grant of $10k, though she has 4 kids anyway. So when you earn, make sure you earn very well or try and stay below $42k a year if you plan on accessing some government benefits..
Babyvet:

We are talking about his income not his savings .Go read the op post , he said his salary for last year was around $100,000

Hey guys,
I haven't been on this thread for a long while, because sometimes when you makes plans, Life happens. Well Long story short, My company insisted i go back to just regular 8 hours a day because they could not pay for my overtime. Mind you, this is a multi billion dollar project.
I discovered that the company managers had a meeting about me at the beginning of this year and decided to make sure i dont work overtime because i made more than a bunch of them. I made exactly $100,039 last year, working as a security guard. Impressive i think. I took what they said in good faith and have been working regular shift since. i would have gotten a second job, but i am on course to be one of the best or probably the best student in my masters program, so i decided to focus on my studies and graduate with honors.
I have realized that people that smile with you everyday, are not actually happy about your success, even when your success does not amount to their failure. They just dont like the fact that a security guard, or probably a black African security guard earns more than managers. Don't get me wrong, i dont think Canada is as racist as some other countries, but i think there is a little bit of it. Now point of note, earning so much is good, but it also disqualifies you from some benefits in Canada. For example, the grants i got for my student loan this year are next too nothing cos i earned above $80k on my tax statements. Another point of note, i paid just about $30k in taxes last year.

Hey guys,
First of all, I've got to apologize for been off for so long. I had a lot going on and i just had to be off for a while. So like i told you guys, i would be traveling to Calgary for Christmas, I did. And the journey was so freaking long. An 18 hour journey in Nigeria is no way an 18 hour journey in Canada. On my way back, i had a little accident in my car. Before i left for to Calgary, i wanted to change my tires to snow tires, but the mechanic suggested i use 'All Weather tires " so i dont have to change again during summer, and i did. I think that was a bad decision. So on our way back, we encountered a mild snow storm, and the roads were entirely white and my vehicle kept skidding. My vehicle being a front wheel drive did not help matters, so the vehicle had a bad skid and we had an accident. Luckily for us, it happened when i had already entered my province, so it could be covered by my insurance. But my deductible is quite high $2500, so i had to pay that before insurance could take over. Long story short, i spent of money a lot in Calgary, and i also spent a lot fixing my car when i got home. So i had to dip into my Savings. I was really sad but we've gotta keep living.
When i got back to work, i realized the company i work with had a meeting and decided that they do not want to pay me for overtime anymore, and that they need to employ someone else for the other 8 hour shift. To be honest, this was a hard knock for me, because i just moved to a more expensive accommodation. They first complained that my long hours may be detrimental to my health, but when i suggested to them that i dont mind working without overtime pay, they agreed. Now, this made me realize they actually dont care about my health, they were not just happy that a security guard was earning so much. I am trying to decide whether i want to continue without overtime pay or look for a second job.
Now as for my savings, I am starting to build it up again, its gonna be a bit hard, but i am committed to it.
Happy new year to everyone

You are completely right. But not to worry, myself and my wife have worked it out completely. i try to explain completely every point i make here so we can all understand. But it may be difficult for me to break down this particular point, so i will just leave it. But i promise, in subsequent post, you will realize how we were able to make ends meet.
Mizwisdom:

Yeah the details make it confusing. Like the wife will need stuffs, transport, clothes and all expenses so what's the motive of handing over a part time pay check when the hubby is already completely responsible for her needs and she'll be enrolling for her school. Her needs will still come from his pocket. OP, if you can't save as much each month, you can pause a bit on it till the next but if you give details on your wife's paycheck, we know you're still responsible for her needs and general upkeep and it will come from same savings

First of all, Bro, this is a huge encoragement and i appreciate you for that. My intention is to get to the point where i could have achieved or even surpassed you. I pray God make you bigger.
naijaman3:

The statement in bold is not always true. If you plan your life properly you do not need to work more than 40hrs in a week to live decent and debt free life. With the correct residency status, people may have to work a lot of hours in a minimum wage job when they just arrive. With proper planning, they can eventually get a job in their profession and work only 40hrs a week. If you read the Op (@atutupoyoyo2211) post from start, you will see that this is what he is planning to do. He does not plan to stay in this kind of job for the rest if his life. Sadly, this type of opportunity is not available in Nigeria.

I have been trying to avoid talking about my own experience regarding @atutupoyoyo2211 approach because I am trying to protect my identity and also because if some people find it difficult to believe @atutupoyoyo2211 whose situation is very straight forward, how would they believe me. Without revealing too much about myself, I will at this point say a little to show what is possible with proper planning and prudent spending:

1. I came to Canada in 2001 with permanent residency visa (landed immigrant visa is what we called it then)
2. I worked in minimum wage job for one year at the same time trying to get my professional certification and register in my profession.
3. For the one year I was doing the minimum wage job, I was living and saving as I explained on page 11 here: https://www.nairaland.com/4857306/monthly-savings-canada/10#73854976
4. By early 2003, I got a job in my profession and started working only 40 hour a week because my salary back in 2003 was already 4 times what I was making while working minimum wage.
5. Two years later, in 2005 I bought my house with 20% down-payment. The down-payment was from all my savings from working minimum wage and 2 years of working in my profession.
6. I continued to live modestly and investing in the stock market (not just savings). This way I was able to fully pay my mortgage in 2015 which is 10 years after buying my house compared to others who spend recklessly and take between 25 to 30 years to pay off their mortgage.
7. Without being boastful, I can tell you that today (2018) I am a Millionaire in Dollars (in cash, stocks and other investments), my wife and I drive luxury SUV’s, we go on vacation with our kids twice a year (one trip within North America during the spring break in March/April and the second trip to anyone of either Europe or Asia or Nigeria when the kids are on summer vacation in July and August).
8. I have a lovely and supportive wife and amazing 3 kids that are making me proud and thankful to God daily.
9. All of the above do not include my wife’s savings and investment as she also works in her own profession.
10. I do not have any type of debt (no mortgage debt, no car debt, no credit card debt). I pay my credit card in full every month.

If the above is not fulfilling and living my Canadian dream, what else is it.

@atutupoyoyo2211: I hope you can learn one or two things from my write up above. Please continue doing your thing and do not be discouraged. I can see success in you. Please do not disappoint me.

Important: Please note that the above is applicable only if your status in Canada is legal (i.e. you have permanent residency or you are a citizen). Please do not plan to come to Canada with just a visitor visa and think you can easily make it like we are trying to explain here. As far as I am concerned planning to come here and make it on visitor visa is a suicide mission. You may end up making it but the chance is very slim and I do not encourage such move.

Hey guys, i know i was supposed to post a new balance this week, but holidays no be small thing o. You have to get gifts for family, friends and so on. So i have to take a break from saving for the next 2 weeks. However, my wife decided to give me 2 of her paychecks to make it up in January, so we are still on track. I decided not to travel to the US again, but instead to spend my holidays in Canada. Return ticket to New york is like $700 and we are 2. Other interesting cities in US was just about the same price. It will cost over $2500 just to spend the holiday in US. Myself and wifey decided to plan a holiday for early next year. Infact i got a return ticket to Singapore for $700, same price for tickets to Seoul. Its crazy how fares are so expensive this period, well its expected.
I will be doing a road trip to Calgary this holiday and i will document with some pictures and put them on here. By the way, Happy holidays to everyone.

I have a friend in Lagos who is also a footballer. He also harbors your kind of dreams too. Now in 2014, he approached me to assist him go abroad for football, he is actually a very good player. We hustled in Lagos together some years before that, and i promised him, if God's blesses me, i would assist him. So when i landed my Job in Nigeria, i offered to assist him. He brought me an offer from a club in india for him. I did my own investigation and found out the offer was genuine because i have been to india before. I provided the money for VISA, Ticket, initial accommodation and pocket money for him, totaling almost 900k. After securing the visa, an agent approached him and told him of an offer in Spain. I warned him not to take it, but he told me he trusted the friend. So he diverted the rest of the money i gave him to the spain deal, and sure enough, he was duped. After that, i almost made up my mind not to to assist him again. But about 3 months ago he approached me with another deal for a club in Azerbaijan, and i made him understand this will be the last help i would render him, but i was wise this time and gave him only 50k. Because since 2014 till date i have assisted him with over 1.2 million naira. We are still waiting for the Visa to be issued for Azerbaijan after 2 months he applied. I dont want to assume he has been duped again but we will see. My point is this, there are a lot of fake agents out there. You have to be very careful. I can't advise you on what to do with 2 million, but what ever you do with it, make sure it is profitable. For example, football is way bigger in South Africa and Egypt compared to Canada. That's why i was going along with the people that suggested you try Africa.

At the time we applied, my mum was still in her 40s. We used the Federal skilled worker route. We actually applied in 2007. !0 million
naira which is just below CAD$40k may be sufficient but it depends on the province you are moving too. Note, the most expensive province in Canada is British Columbia and the most expensive city in Canada is Vancouver.
ONNYX:

I am nudging 50 (in about 3 years time). I have been considering relocating to Canada for a few weeks now. A little research revealed that I would most likely not be qualified for the express entry format.

How did your mum do it? Under which immigration option?

And I would like to relocate the whole family.

If I could aggregate the sum of 10 Million Naira, would it cover expenses for at least 1 year while we (hubby and wife) look for some earning route?

I have no mum or dad or a child so I have no problem relocating out of Nigeria but Can I come to Canada with a savings of a million naira that I have and mind you I have just a secondary results and i didn't learn any trade but am a hustler and a tough guy.
