If you dont mind going to smaller provinces to study, i think University of Saskachewan and Memorial university of newfounland can easily admit. Also it may be wise to take some open courses from universities in Canada which can boost your GPA, then you can go ahead and apply to better universities.
adesbaba:
A quick question

Having known that Canada rarely admits 2:2 grads for msc/MBA from the student visa thread n from those university's admission requirements page....

After Landing in Canny as a PR,can they consider taking a 2:2 grad of say 3.3cgpa for MSC/mba......cos I learnt the tuition will be paid as domestic student not international std...

Tanks for answering

I think maybe i should. Because my intention with this thread is to explain with examples so that others can be encouraged and actually make an attempt to save and succeed.

I understand your reaction to the comment. But because i want this thread to benefit others that is why i still take time to explain. I think we all just need a bit of clarification to understand.
deejay102:

What I'm confused about is what problem you have trying to analyze another man's mother. Well, Yes teachers earn over 130k in Nigeria even as a government worker level 13 upwards. It is her call and that of her family to go wherever and rest so wetin happen? Haven't you heard of people holding top positions in firms in Nigeria and earning that 400k or more relocating to Canada? It is not about luxury but a working country and trying to secure the future of one's children. Why didn't you stay back too..

Please quit trying to understand what is none of your business and let the guy be!

First of all, My mum actually earned a bit more than 130k. She worked at the secondary school of a well known federal university and she was working their for almost 20 years. So you can see the 130k is even small.
Now as per my mum wanting to rest, one thing you must know is that, Canada is very hard and Nigeria is very sweet if you have money. My mum used the transit system throughout and it was really stressful for her. The cold was not also to good for her but she bore it and kept pushing. Canada is a place where you may not find it easy to foster friendships because everyone is working. She wants to just go back to Nigeria and take some time off to rest and just do what interests her without going to work every morning. She doesn't need to work, because she converted her savings to naira and bought treasure bills in Nigeria. This gives her an extra 1.2 million naira every year.
As for me, yes 400k looks like a lot of money. But if you read my posts from the beginning, you will see where i said my PR visa was about to expire and i didnt think it would make sense to lose my PR status over a 400k salary. And also being a married man, Canadian citizenship is always good for the children, and trust me with the current state of Nigeria, foreign exchange ain't bad at all.
Lastly, i dont think knowledge of my age is necessary.Well, i am a still young man.
yemiosinbajo:
The only area I'm very confused about is where you said your mother earned 130K as a teacher in Nigeria, and you earned over 400K. Then you capped it up by saying that your mom, now a Canadian citizen, wants to go back to Nigeria to 'rest'.

Sometimes I wonder if it's the same Nigeria I left years ago, but someone should correct me if I'm wrong: what sort of teachers in Nigeria earned up to 130K three years ago? Was she teaching at an international school like those British Lekki school or mission schools like Loyola? If she was, then, she must be highly qualified, so how come she struggled on arriving in Canada? And now, Nigeria is a place people go to rest? You even said she informed you that she is no longer intending to go into teaching -- does this mean she's intending to go back to continue life in Nigeria or what?

And if you were earning 400K per month in Nigeria back in the day, what makes you think you are making it more in Canada now? With 400K a month in Nigeria at the time, wouldn't you be able to afford all the same luxury you have now in Canada if you had this same amount of discipline? The bulk of Nigerians you see on this travel section willing to relocate abroad are not earning anything close to 400K a month. And your mom is in her 50's, so how old are you?

Note that I'm not accusing you of lying about anything, I just got confused by these aspects of your statements, and would be a good idea if you could clarify.

I dont get offended when people post negative stuff online because when whenever we post something online we should expect both negative and positive comments. I get encouraged by the negative comments.
@opebiboy you sound like a hardworking Nigerian that is just trying to be successful like each and everyone of us. You mentioned you import cars from overseas which is an honorable business. let me tell you what i see at the site i work security. This is a 5 year construction project going on here. Every day i sign in trucks to drop off sand and gravel on the site. Now 90% of the drivers of these trucks are Indian, and what they do is that, they bring their brothers from Indian to learn truck driving under them and within 2 years, the apprentice has his own truck and then delivers on his own. Most of them then register their own company and you see the name on the truck. i am at work right now and i truck driver just came. I was registering him in the system when i asked him what company he works for, and he said the name. And i released this man, who is a born and bred Canadian is driving trucks fro and Indian immigrant. The owner of the company was still delivering today, and i talked with him,. he told me he has 3 trucks that drive for him. My bank rep once told me that, everyday she sees truck drivers and restaurant owners, who come in and they have account balances of $300k and above. Anyone in Canada can correct me if i am wrong.
The longshoremen that work on our site make $50 an hour and above. And they are unionized, so their pay always goes up. One of the longshoremen on our site drives a bentley bentayga. My own Security supervisor drives a 2013 g wagon. He is from Iran. He came to Canada and worked Security and warehouse for 6 years straight, working 16 to 18 hours a day. Right now he only works 8 hours a day and his daughter also works on site as the assistant security supervisor. she is also a workaholic getting experience to be a police office. she drives a BMW X6. When my supervisor saw i was ready to work, he always gave me shifts.
The purpose of this is to tell @opebiboy, it is not all about scam, people work hard, people toil day and night to succeed.
You keep posting links thats says "the average Canadian this, the average Canadian that', I am not an average Canadian. I am and will be a successful Canadian through hard work. The internet says Nigerians are poor but all Nigerians are not poor. Try not to be classified as part of the average.

I am going to crave the indulgence of those that have sent me a DM. I apologize in advance but like i said i like to work with facts. If i replied your DM, please come and tell the house. I dont reply DMs because all the info i want to put, i put it on here. I only replied one DM just out of curiosity and he asked me a question about certifications needed to work in the security field. i am going to answer the question here.
Now, depending on your province, for example in Alberta, you can just go to trainmyguard.com, you can get all the certifications necessary over there. In BC, there are security companies that are licensed to give training and exams at their premises. In Manitoba, its the same thing.they have programs tailored to the province. You can just google security companies in that region and you can go from there.

I dont feel the need to reply but i am doing so for those that will be discouraged by your comments. When your pastor goes on the altar and tells you, "you are going to buy a car in 2019 and you have no source of income, why do you shout Amen, when your pastor gives you abstract motivational statements that seem alien to you due to your present condition in order to encourage you, why do say Amen? The difference between us is that, when i here such statements on the altar, i immediately put it into work. My mother used to say, if someone calls you mad and you look at your self and you are not mad, simply work away. i will end with this, an Igbo man once said when he was arguing with someone over the name of his car, he said Nwanne, you have the name, i have the car. So i'm gonna say, Nwanne you have your opinions, i have the money.
opebiboy:

Thanks Sevule. Your points are truly on point, but i have other intentions for my Savings. My goal is actually to become self employed within the next 3 years.
On your first point, buying a house is really cool, but right now my stability is not really guaranteed about which province i would want to settle in. I am very intelligent person, and i have lots of ideas that i could develop to become really rich, no kidding. But the issue i have is no seed capital. I want to get myself out of the situation where i have to always save in order to implement an idea. I want to be thinking about what to invest in instead of thinking of how to acquire capital to invest. I have realized there is so much peace of mind if you know you have some money in your account for eventualities and such. My intention for saving is to get ahead and not to always be trying to catch up.
On your second point, You are completely right. I made a mistake buying the car in the first place, because i really did not understand the terms. But then, because of the situation i found myself with the car, i immediately resolved that i must earn in such a way that my car is not more than 10% of my pay every month. That was my second motivation to work as hard as i do. Having a 2017 car also made it possible to not think about mechanic issues and my car has warranty and all that. By the time i have able to meet my savings Target, my balance on the car will be about 16k. At that time i will decide if i wanna pay it off or may just continue the monthly payment. So all i am concerned about is just working hard.

1. Become a Canadian citizen
2. Have $120,000 in my account
3. Have this car or another nice one in my garage.
4. Complete my masters degree.
Simple and short.
sevule:

@atutupoyoyo2211
I am impressed!! You saved $7,000 in roughly 3 months, if that is not impressive I wonder what is.
If you don't mid I would like to give you some tips. Rather than save $120,000 have you thought about entering real estate?
Instead of paying a landlord $1,300 a month, you can buy your own house and start building equity. So basically you are paying yourself $1,300 a month.
Secondly and don't take this the wrong way but why are you paying for a new car? $500 every month for 8 years is a lot of money and I think you are better off driving a clean used car than paying for a new car. I drive a 2007 Hyundai which serves me well but I own my own house (mortgage). I honestly don't see the essence of a new car as it loses value immediately you drive it out of the lot

First of all, thanks for the kind words. Now, i have a family member who studied in Nigeria, came out with a 2:1 in Biochemistry, went to the UK for a masters degree, was one of the best and moved straight to Canada after that in 2014. she had to start as a ware house worker, which she did for one year, then also moved to health care assistant, which she did for about 3 years. While doing this she started a nursing degree and is almost through with it. In between the warehouse jobs and the health care assistant jobs, she was able to save $75000. And guess what she also became a citizen within that time. She is actually the one that motivated me to save. So your background does not matter. Try and apply for a job in your area immediately you land, but if you cant get in your area start in any area while you are taking a course in your area. It can be another bachelor's or even a diploma it doesn't really matter.Jobs with a biochemistry background may not be easy of the bat, but it is not impossible. If you have the ability to do you Phd in Canada, that would be nice if not, when you are done with your Phd you can move over and take another Phd in Canada, that is also good. But, i will be honest, even if you have a Phd from Nigeria your chances of teaching in a university or college immediately you land is very slim.
sunky644:
@Atutupoyoyo, you have really inspired quite a number of us. I stayed awake reading from Page 1-9 and I must say your mum's story sealed the encouragement.
I am a lecturer with PhD in view in Naija (Biochemistry field with about 10 publications in well indexed international journals) and my wife is a Masters degree holder (Food Science) also in naija. The dream of becoming a Professor and fear of not getting academic position if we relocate to Canada is withholding me from taking step.
If I blaze the trial to take step in 2019 and we move after my PhD, what degree will I have to go for in Canada to be relevant?
What's the possibility of landing an Academic position?
Is their conversion program for Food Scientists to Dietitian in Canada, if yes, what's the program duration?
My brother, if you could leave a #400k monthly job in Naija to put life in right track and start as a Security in Canada (I am aware there is dignity of labour), then why should I stay glued to just #130k per month job in Naija even when my wife couldn't get a job here despite her Masters.
Guys, help me dissect my case and short bio and let me hear your opinions...pls....

If you weren't restricted to a province, then that will be the federal skill workers program. I came here under the same program. It ran from 2001 till 2014 or so till express entry was introduced.

Hey, guys, received a very good news today. My mum just passed her citizenship exam, she scored 20/20. She is gonna be sworn in by February. My Mother is in her 50's. When she came to Canada 3 years ago with the intention to stay, she didn't know where to start because of her age. But she had the perseverance and drive. She worked as a dish washer for almost a year being paid $12.35 an hour, but she was not discouraged. After the first year as a dishwasher, she was able to find a job as a health care assistant, helping out seniors. It was a hectic job, and she was paid $18 an hour for the job. She took extra shifts and committed herself to saving money. She didn't have to pay for accommodation, because she stayed with a family member. Fast forward December 2018, My mum has saved $53,000 and is now a Canadian citizen. She made the best use of the last 3 years. She is now preparing to go back to Nigeria and get some really deserved rest. My mum used to work as a teacher in Nigeria earning 120,000 naira a month. She said she is not returning to teaching again.
If you believe, you can achieve, an example from a 54 year old woman.

In my case, i work at least 30 hours overtime a week, so making savings is a huge possibility. Also i noticed the more time you work, the less time you have to spend.
salford1:

I think he wanted to type 1.2 million.

In addition to your contribution, for that amount using Ontario as an example with no OT, take home after tax, cpp and EI deductions would be around 27k.

Now let us work out some average figures:

- Rent: $1000 (A single person can save by living in shared apartment).
- Feeding: $150 (Would be around $300 for a family)
- Phone: $70
- Internet: $65
- Clothing and miscelleneous: $40
- Let say condo living, electricity: $60, else (Heating+ water+electricity = $200).
- Car insurance - $100 (if public transport, $100)
I have not included car finance and used a very conservative amount for insurance.

Adding all the amount not in brackets. Total/year equals :circa $18,000

27k minus 18k leaves around 9k per year.
9k per year equals like $750/month.

Well, i wont say no or yes, i think is more about if you can land an interview. What you can do is not to put the country you earned the degree in your resume then go to the interview and impress them, at that point i dont think they would really bother about your degree. But, do not lie about the country you obtained you degree if you are asked.

Not necessarily. My former colleague in Nigeria who came to Canada 3 years before i did is a manager at one of BC's government agencies, and he has only being in Canada for 5 years. Though he has about 15 years of experience in Nigeria and guess what, they refused to make him even a supervisor or team lead in Nigeria because of "man know man" syndrome. Well, the guy earns about $109,000 a year now compared to the 435,000 naira he earned in Nigeria.

Generally people like to mind their business, but if you are a friendly person, you can make friends. If you are not friendly, you actually dont make enemies, just that you would be by yourself, which is generally normal here, but not in all environments. I once left a job because they said i wasn't not interacting with everyone in office. There were not entirely wrong, but i tried my best in communication. I later found out that the people who complained where the 2 guys who were gay that worked with me. I have nothing against anyone's sexual preference but it was just very difficult for me to maintain a discussion with them because of their line of discussion.

I made $3572 before taxes in the last 2 weeks. After tax, i was paid $2809. Out of this i saved about $2400. The rest of the savings came from an extra job i did sometime ago and a debt i was owed by a friend. The reason why i am this elaborate with these figures is to disuade that notion that because of taxes or bills, one can not make a decent income and still save, and it encourages my to push on. I am also supporting my wife and we both decided she enrol in school full time for her masters degree. So she doesn't work for now. but she will start a part time job soon at my place of work. If you are willing to work hard, you can succeed. I will be moving to a house closer to my work place in the next few weeks, just a 12 minutes drive. This means i will start getting a full 7 hours sleep, which is nice.
