BusinessRe: Tips For Getting Your Business Name Approved With CAC by AustinStevens: 6:38am On Sep 26, 2016
foxychev:
Name Availability search is the first step to take when you want to register your business with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), whether it is an enterprise, limited liability company (Ltd or Plc), or a non-profit organization like NGOs or churches.
First let me give you possible reasons why your proposed business name may be rejected at the CAC:
1. Names that are ambiguous or unclear, or confusing. Names that can confuse the public about the nature of your business, or awkward combination of words. E.g. Johnson Enterprises Company; or Johnson Motors and Health Ltd.
2. Use of reserved names like Johnson Chamber of Commerce, or John Department of Agriculture.
3. Use of names that are closely similar to that of existing registered companies with the CAC. For instance, you cannot use a name like "Dangots Sugar Ltd", because you know quite well that there is an existing company called "Dangote Sugar Plc". People can easily confuse those two names together.
Well, it is obvious we all know "Dangote Sugar", but there are thousands of registered companies we don't know about, and if we try to reserve a name close to theirs, it will be rejected by CAC.
Can we see the list of all registered companies in Nigeria before choosing our own name? Yes, but not practicable!
So what do we do?
Here are some tips to assist you in selecting a good business name that flies at the CAC Name Availability Search...
1. Be creative, very creative.
Some names are common and can be easily thought of. If you are thinking of using "Amazing Grace Nigeria Ltd", that is an easy name to come by! You can be certain that there will be existing companies having one or both words in their names. Think of unique words.
2. Explore other Languages.
For instance, if you are a fan of French or Spanish, or your native language, you can simply translate common words into them. You have a higher chance of getting your name reserved. For instance, you can translate "Red" into "Rouge" (French), or "Colorado" (Spanish).
3. Combine words that are rarely used together.
Everyone knows “Amazing Grace” are two words that are used together most of the time. “Abundant Grace” won’t be a good choice either. But if we say something like “Colossal Grace” we stand a better chance.
4. Combine more words (Don’t exceed 5 words!).
The reason for this is to reduce the chances of having closely similar words with the names of other companies. For instance, suppose we have “Johnson Nigeria Limited” already registered and we love the name Johnson so much that we don’t want to drop it or interpret it into another language. CAC may reject “Johnson Engineering Ltd”, or “Johnson Electrical Ltd”. But if we have two additional words different from those of the existing one, we can get ours approved. So if we choose “Johnson Engineering Services Ltd”, we will likely get an approval.
5. Specialize your business name
Let the nature of your business reflect in the name. E.g. adding suffixes like Engineering, Publishing, Health Services, Business Solutions, Farms, etc. will help you to distinguish your company name from others baring similar names but are into different natures of business, and consequently get an approval. Now, assuming “Johnson Nigeria Limited” and “Johnson Engineering Services Ltd” are registered, and we are into publishing, we can use “Johnson Publishing House Ltd”. It will likely get approved.
6. Google up your intended name.
Many businesses are creating online presence via corporate websites, blogs, online business directories, social media pages, etc. If you Google search your proposed name, you might come across an existing company with similar name. This will help you to fine tune yours further.
7. Be flexible, don’t be obsessed with a particular name.
I have seen people do like 5 name searches, and still don’t get an approved name. That is like 10 rejected names, since they have two options for each search! Being flexible will allow you to follow advices 1 to 6 above, thereby saving you money, energy and time expended on multiple searches.
Note that CAC has the right to approve or reject any name, based on their discretion. But a well thought of, unambiguous name will get you an approval.
Finally, seek advice from friends, family and professionals. Don’t be alone.
Contributions are welcome, please.

True talk sir...but the main issue should be how to utilize this aboundant human capital....cuz In as much as it could help boost productivity it can aswell be a barrier to growth.

Got this from a friend and thought to share it .....it's not political just some plain truth whether you are APC or PDP.....
Nigeria started generating power in 1898.
In 118 years, Nigeria has managed to generate and distribute no more than circa 5,000MW or 5GW annually
Compare to China who generates an ADDITIONAL 20,000MW or 20GW annually from Solar alone
You don't want to add what China is developing from Gas, Hydro, Coal, Wind, and Bio. You just may get depressed.
This means that....
What Nigeria generates annually after 118 years of generation, China is able to generate incrementally from Solar alone in 3 months only.
Yes....3 months!
If you add other sources outside solar, those 3 months could reduce to minutes.....
The idea of this writing is to shock you.
So.... Be totally shocked
The numbers and comparisons were intended to shock us out of our stupor-like decadence and intellectual laziness with unfounded sobriquet like "Giants of Africa" ringing in our empty ears.
Show us who we really are, where we really are, and where we might be headed
That's firstly..
Then secondly....
To point at our human resource as our critical resource and as the path forward.
To highlight the foolishness resident in crude-oil-laden thinking, which has so engulfed us as a nation.
To return to the Nigerian female and Nigerian male. And recognize them for who they are.....
Our most prized national assets
2. Crude Oil and National Income
This year alone just four companies are bringing investments of over 10 Billion USD into the Chinese pork industry. Nigeria has not attracted that that its almighty crude oil industry this year.
Brazil makes more money from Sugar Cane than Nigeria makes from Crude Oil.
Brazil's sugar cane industry employs 1.1million Brazilians and generates 86 Billion USD annually for Brazil.
If Nigeria can generate half of that figure (only 43 Billion USD) from crude oil this year, we will throw a grand celebratory party
3. National Budget
Nigeria's entire national budget for 2016 is 6 Trillion Naira. It is its highest budget ever.
In today's bank to bank rate, that's about 17Billion USD
On Friday November 28, 2014, just one company in America called Walmart, made sales of 8.5 Billion USD in a space of 24 hours.
Yes...you read it right just one company, Walmart, made sales as much as half of Nigeria's entire annual budget in a space of 24 hours.
And in case you need to know, Walmart makes annual sales in the region of 480 Billion USD.
Let me tell you what this means....please be prepared:
It means that one company alone, Walmart, from its revenue from one year only, could have financed Nigeria's budget from when I was born till date.
OK....let's move on....
Official figures say that America has over 2,000 (two thousand) cities. One of those cities is New York.
New York City's budget for 2016 is 73 Billion USD. Or Nigeria's national budget multiplied by four.
That means, that New York City alone, from its annual budget, can finance every single government expenditure of all governments (federal, state, and local governments) in the entire Nigeria for 4 whole years!
Just to add perspective, kindly note that New York is a municipality - our equivalent of Local government
Recall my numbers from above? Note that from just revenues for one single year, Walmart could have been able to fund Nigeria's budget from independence till date. Even with necessary adjustments for inflation and time value of money.
Understand the consequences of this? That one, (just one o!), well placed business in America, made more money in one year than Nigerian entire budget for last 56 years.
That's wealth creation the super entrepreneurs way. And Walmart is a "super-enterprise"
If we faced wealth creation via this vehicle I call "super-enterprise", through the creation of new economies that crude oil would come only a very distant second to, we would be well on our way to global stardom.
However the know-how to create this kind of new wealth is locked away in people's brains. They need to be released. Hence.....your 200 million strong human assets are your most critical
And it is easier these days. Simply because of our brave new world propelled by brave new technologies. A flat world where goods and services can be produced anywhere and sold anywhere, at near zero delivery costs.
It means that our potential addressable market is suddenly closer to 7 billion people than it is to 200 million people.
And it means that the super enterprise way may have just been made easier to achieve...
And please note, all this shout about corruption this corruption that. Note that the source and focus of most of our corruption is crude oil and crude-oil-laden thinking. It is crude oil and Allied proceeds sharing that has led to most of the corruption we know today. So you can imagine that it is possible to drive a drastic reduction in corruption and like thinking with an approach that totally negates amd belittles crude oil
If China can make as money from ordinary pork meat as we make from crude oil, and Brazil can make double the money we make from crude oil, from that piece of edible grass called Sugar Cane, go figure!

Now the store house
Is empty and need a refill
The means is missing
The end is far

The night is calling
And hope sleeps
The day is dying
The people awaits

If only the hand
Could help the head lie
Maybe we won't have snored

Yes!
For all we want is
To get out of this hole
To put a light to the dark
But it is almost over
So we will wait patiently
For the dawn to appear.

In that sacred mind
The treasure is hidden
Through the eyes
Are the pathway to innocence

The past is pure
The future is forgiven
The feet is clean
The ground is dirty

Simple is the step
Diligent is the word
Back is forbidden
And salty it taste

Unto the sky
It rest
For calm
Is the waters

Virtue it be gets
For patience is the strength
The rhythm is slow
The sound is mild
The words are deep

The sacred awaits
At the line
Where it ends
For there it shall start.
