Politics / Tinubu Greater Than Obasanjo – Basorun by ayomidegambari(m): 6:17am On Sep 11, 2015 |
The first Secretary to the Alhaji Lateef Jakande-led Lagos State Government, Chief Olorunfunmi Basorun, speaks to ENIOLA AKINKUOTU about the debate over Yoruba leadership and other political issues You were a top member of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s party, the Unity Party of Nigeria. Do you agree with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s argument that there can never be a Yoruba leader? The Yoruba leader now, without doubt, is Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and there are many reasons for this. The leadership of the Yoruba, whether political or otherwise, is based on who has advanced the interest of the Yoruba the most in recent times and Tinubu has done this. Firstly, he has fought for the interest of the Yoruba people. He helped Kayode Fayemi to get his governorship bid back in Ekiti in 2010. In the same year, he helped Rauf Aregbesola to get his governorship mandate back in Osun State. He helped Olusegun Mimiko get his governorship mandate back in Ondo State in 2009. He even helped Adams Oshiomhole in Edo as well. That shows that his interest transcends personal preferences. In the political arena, he graduated and moved to ensure that Nigeria became virtually a two-party state. Because of Tinubu’s effort coupled with others’, the APC was born. He led various others to ensure that the party did not die. Before the merger of the party, there was a quarrel between President Muhammadu Buhari and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who was then the Kano State Governor. Tinubu brought both of them to the table of reconciliation and settled it and the party emerged. That party, the APC, is in power today. The party now rules 22 states out of 36 in Nigeria and also produced the President. This shows Tinubu’s achievements in politics. Even look at the South-West. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State were in different parties before 2011. Tinubu brought them into his party and they are now running a second term in their respective states. During the last elections, Yoruba contributed 2.433m votes to Buhari’s presidency where Buhari got 15m. That constitutes about 16 per cent of Buhari’s votes and this kind of thing had never happened before. Even when Obasanjo was made President, he didn’t get more than one million votes in the South-West and in terms of percentage, it was insignificant. And in the process of negotiations, Tinubu got the position of the vice-president for the South-West. I cannot point to any other Yoruba leader today that has struggled for the Yoruba like Tinubu and succeeded. But When Chief Obafemi Awolowo was named as the Yoruba leader, it was an unanimous decision by all notable Yoruba leaders at the time. Why is Tinubu’s own controversial? By our age, one should assume that we knew what happened then. There was a lot of confusion after the second coup and there was a meeting. Awolowo gave two conditions. He said the army’s occupation of Lagos must end and that if the Igbo were compelled to secede, the South- West would go. These two statements, in the face of guns, encouraged those present at the meeting to proclaim Awolowo as the leader of the Yoruba that time. The environment then was different from the one that Tinubu is living in now. I am not saying that Tinubu is the same as Awolowo but they lived at different times. Chief Awolowo did many things based on the needs at that time. He built the first stadium in Nigeria, the first television station, the first to introduce free health and free education. These were the needs at that time and many people loved him but those who didn’t love him were many. Apart from Adisa Akinloye, after the second coup in 1966, could anybody from Ogbomoso pronounce Awolowo as the leader of the Yoruba people? No. Because they were still bitter about the way Ladoke Akintola died. So, those who are generalising and looking at the view of Awolowo’s supporters as the general mind of Yoruba people, forget that the Yoruba people never went in one direction. As we are talking about Tinubu now, there are some who hate him and do not hide it. But when you talk of Yoruba leadership, there will be the first among equals, and what I am saying is that Tinubu is the first among those who are carrying the Yoruba banner very high. But Awolowo said there cannot be a Yoruba leader during the period of partisan politics but there can be a cultural leader. Are you saying that we can have a Yoruba leader now? There are cultural leaders such as traditional rulers but on the issue of politics, there must always be a leader who can stick out his neck and fight for his people. Awolowo once said that a day will come when the masses in the North and South, Christians, Muslims will come together as a force for progress and unity and kick against rigging, corruption and that is what we are facing now. And we are happy that one of our own in the South-West is carrying out this prediction of Chief Awolowo. Why should he not be the leader of the Yoruba for now? Whether it is political leader or anything we want to call it, who has achieved what Tinubu has achieved? Wouldn’t it be appropriate to call Obasanjo the Yoruba leader since he is the only Yoruba man to ever emerge as President? He was President and he had greatness thrust upon him but he did not work for greatness. I took part in electing him because I was the founding chairman of the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party. We went to him in Abeokuta and spoke to him when he just returned from prison but his first response was that he had become a born again Christian and had no interest in politics. So, he did not work to be President. Most of the Yoruba did not even want him. In the 1999 election, he was defeated at his polling unit. I took the pain to compile all the votes he got. He received about 1.1million votes in the South-West but most of the votes in the South-West came from Lagos. He got about 209,000 votes from Lagos. He got a few votes from other South-West states. As President, he performed to the best of his ability. But Obasanjo cannot match the intellectual capacity of Awolowo and Tinubu. So, Obasanjo is a chief and he is respected in Yoruba land but in the contemporary Nigeria today, Tinubu is the Yoruba leader. Even as President, Obasanjo was not called Yoruba leader at that time because he did not achieve anything on his own. It was a question of people helping him. Awolowo said this in the House of Representatives many years ago that some are born great, some achieve greatness while some have greatness thrust upon them. Tinubu achieved greatness while Obasanjo had greatness thrust upon him. www.punchng.com/politics/tinubu-greater-than-obasanjo-basorun/ 1 Like

Crime / Www.punchng.com/news/n28-9bn-fraud-efcc-arrests-bgl-boss-okumagba by ayomidegambari(m): 5:55am On Sep 11, 2015 |
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested the Group Managing Director of BGL Plc, a Lagos-based financial services company, Mr. Albert Okumagba, for alleged N28.9bn fraud. An operative of the commission, who confided in our correspondent, said that those investigating the matter had been grilling the BGL boss for allegedly obtaining money by false pretences. Though Okumagba on Thursday made a bid for his freedom but he failed to obtain an interim injunction barring the EFCC from arresting him. Justice Mohammed Yunusa refused to grant the ex parte application argued by Okumagba’s counsel, Kolawole Reheem. He also refused to order the EFCC to appear in court to justify why Okumagba’s prayers should not be granted. Rather than grant Okumagba’s prayers, Justice Yunusa asked that the processes should be served on the respondents in Lagos as prayed in reliefs 5 and 6. Our correspondents found that Okumagba was picked up by anti-graft operatives on Wednesday in response to a petition by the by the Security and Exchange Commission in May, 2015. An EFCC source said, “The EFCC has arrested Mr. Albert Okumagba, Group Managing Director of BGL Plc, a financial services company, for offences allegedly bordering on obtaining money by false pretences. “The 51-year-old, who hails from Delta State, was picked up late Wednesday, September 9, 2015, by operatives of the EFCC. “His arrest was triggered by investigation into a petition submitted to the anti-graft agency by the Security and Exchange Commission in May 2015. “The suspect is alleged to have diverted the sum of N28.9bn being proceeds of private placements of 4.3bn ordinary shares of 50k each at N7.00k per share in 2007. “The company, whose subsidiaries include BGL Capital, BGL Private Equity, BGL Security and BGL Asset Management, allegedly lured 50 investors from across the country into subscribing to the company’s shares, promising them options of liquidity and exit within two years.” It was stated that the investors were not able to liquidate their assets contrary to the promise made to them and that an alleged promise that BGL would be listed on the Securities and Exchange Commission two years after the offer in 2008 was not fulfilled The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the arrest and interrogation of the BGL boss. No fewer than 40 petitions were said to have been sent to the SEC against BGL by aggrieved capital market investors in the country as well as the Rivers State Ministry of Finance. The SEC had earlier announced the suspension of the BGL Group from capital market activities on the strength of the allegations contained in the petitions. But on May 27, 2015, BGL had obtained an interim injunction by Justice Saliu Saidu restraining SEC from suspending it from participating in capital market activities. Also on July 21, 2015, the firm obtained another interim injunction by Justice Mohammed Idris stopping the plan by SEC to hear the various petitions against it. www.punchng.com/news/n28-9bn-fraud-efcc-arrests-bgl-boss-okumagba/

Politics / PDP Would Have Won If I Wasn’t Removed, Says Tukur. by ayomidegambari(m): 5:46am On Sep 11, 2015 |
A former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, said on Thursday that if he was not forced out of office, his party would have won the 2015 general elections. Tukur, who spoke with journalists at his residence in Abuja as one of the activities to mark his 80th birthday, said the party was winning elections when he was in office. The former PDP chairman was forced to resign from office when he sanctioned some governors of the party. Tukur, who was a former governor of the defunct Gongola State, identified lack of internal democracy as the bane of the former ruling party. The defeat suffered by the PDP was unprecedented as the then opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, won the power at the centre and many states where the PDP had hitherto remained unbeaten. Tukur however said the situation would have been different if he had not been booted out of office unceremoniously. He said, “Well, when I was there I won elections and in the same vein, if I was there I also expect to win the election. “But first and foremost, this is a democracy and in every democratic system, you have the opposition and the party in government. “So, it is time (for the opposition) because it is a democracy and it is the people who decide who they want to vote for and that is what the people have done. “Sure the PDP will rediscover itself. I am sure about that; it is their own party and they can find out what have gone wrong. “If for 16 years people allowed you to rule them and in the 17th year they say no, you have to find out why they said no.” He said he faced problems in the party because some of those he described as strong members of the party were afraid of election and would rather prefer selection. He said such powerful men were ready to leave the party, but he decided to leave for them. Tukur added, “Well, I thought we were in a system of democracy and my views were such that what I believed in were what I will preach. “I wanted election and people said they wanted selection. If the majority or the strong people in the PDP did not believe in it then the choice or the next thing for me to do was to leave. “It is either I leave or they leave but I did not want them to leave, so, I decided to leave. At that time, people said I was preaching internal democracy instead of imposition. So, it was difficult for me to sit down and be part of them.” Despite the way he was treated in his party, Tukur said he would not defect to the APC, saying that it would be difficult for him to change his principle at 80. He said, “At 80, what do you want somebody to do? You want to change somebody’s character at 80? Is it possible? “At 80, you remain because you cannot bend. You are unbendable anymore and if you do it by force, you will break.”. www.punchng.com/news/pdp-would-have-won-if-i-wasnt-removed-says-tukur/

Politics / We’ll Never Hang Buhari’s Portrait In Our Offices - Olisah Metuh by ayomidegambari(m): 10:08am On Sep 09, 2015 |
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has refused to hang the official portrait of President Muhammadu Buhari at the party’s national secretariat, checks by The PUNCH have revealed. Over 100 days after the President assumed office, the PDP has yet to hang his portrait at any of the offices in its Wadata House national secretariat, located at Zone 5, Abuja. The party has also said it would never put Buhari’s portraits on its walls though it has removed that of the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who ruled on the platform of the PDP. “We will never hang his portrait in this office, because President Buhari is not known to our party. He is not a leader of our party and therefore we will never put his portrait here. We are a political party, very partisan and therefore, we are not going to hide that,” National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday. Jonathan was also the presidential candidate of the former ruling party during the last general election but he was defeated by Buhari, who was the presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress. The defeat was the first to be suffered by the PDP since the return of democracy in 1999. Before now, the party has always been hanging the portraits of all the Presidents at the party’s reception area as well as the National Executive Committee and National Working Committee halls within the secretariat. Metuh said the APC also did not hang the portrait of Jonthan in its offices before the former President was defeated in the March 28 election. “Can you find out if the APC had the portrait of former President Jonathan in their office before he was defeated? That is just it,” he told our correspondent. When asked whether the party was taking its own pound of flesh, Metuh said no but that since Buhari “is not a member of our party, we won’t put his portrait here.” The APC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lai Mohammed, expressed shock at Metuh’s comment. “This is ridiculous and we have no comment. Let Nigerians judge the PDP on this matter,” Mohammed said. He said the PDP spokesman had a shallow understanding of the concept of opposition politics. Meanwhile, work has stopped at the new secretariat of the PDP, located in the Central Business District, Abuja. Investigations by our correspondent indicated that contractors handling the project were only doing skeletal jobs at the site. When our correspondent visited the site on Tuesday, there was no visible job being done at the site. It was gathered that the cost of the project was put at N11.5bn when it was awarded some years ago. At completion, the building is expected to have 12 floors, with two other floors serving as the car park. The party had claimed that the project was being financed from levies and contributions from members. When a fund-raising dinner was organised a few years ago, the party was able to realise about N5bn, and the project, which started more than four years ago, was to be delivered in 126 weeks. The former National Chairman of the party, under whose leadership the project commenced, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, had then said that the complex, when completed, would strengthen the capacity of the PDP to discharge its role effectively in Africa. The party had claimed on January 5, 2015 that it was going to spend part of the N21.8bn it realised from the party’s fund-raising on the party’s secretariat. A former Minister for Information and the Chairman of the party’s Fund-raising Committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, had said the money donated to the PDP was not meant for the campaign of the defeated Jonathan alone. www.punchng.com/news/well-never-hang-buharis-portrait-in-our-offices-pdp/

According to him, the city regarded as the safest in Nigeria is now nose-diving into a den of kidnappers with incessant reported cases of child kidnapping. Ibor said, “The fact that Calabar is increasingly gaining this sad reputation as a centre of child kidnapping should be of major concern to all state and national leaders. “Over the last nine months, at least 20 children in the city and outskirts of Calabar have been reportedly kidnapped for suspected ritual purposes. “The number of such cases seems to be increasingly on the rise. Children aged between one to seven years have been reportedly kidnapped, leaving families distressed and helpless. “On the 9th of July 2015, a one year and nine months old baby was kidnapped at Ikot-Abasi Obori Street, Ikot-Ishie Town, Calabar. On 2nd June, 2015 a four and a half year old child was kidnapped at Awi, Akamkpa. “On 15th May, 2015, a four-year-old child was kidnapped at Akamkpa and a two and a half year old child was also kidnapped at Idang, Calabar South. In April, 2015 a four- year-old child was kidnapped at 8 mile Axis of Calabar. “Other cases include a one and half year old child kidnapped in May, 2015 when the kidnappers lured the child’s mother to Aba, Abia State, under the pretence of giving her a job. “Again, in April, 2015 a seven-year-old child was kidnapped at Ambo Street, Calabar South. Another seven-year-old child was kidnapped in April, 2015 at Idang, Calabar South. “On 14th May, 2014 a two-year-old child was kidnapped at Okon Ekpo Close, Off Jebbs, Calabar South. In September, 2014 a four-year-old child was kidnapped at Adiabo, Odukpani. “Also, a little boy of six years and her sister (a two-year-old child), were both kidnapped in June, 2014 at Ikot-Eyo, Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Cross River. “We have the full data and documentation of these kidnapped children in Cross River.” He said that it was also worrisome that parents had been subjected to desperation and trauma in course of financing investigations by law enforcement agents. The organization also condemned what it called heartless and senseless kidnapping of children in Cross River, and urged the Federal and state governments to put an end to child kidnapping. According to the organisation it will help save and protect the lives of our younger generation. He appealed to all to ensure that the victims were returned to their parents alive, adding that anyone suspected of involving in kidnapping of children should be prosecuted. Ibor said,” Child rights are human rights. We must prevent abuse of children today.” www.punchng.com |
Politics / You Can Probe Amaechi, Court Tells Rivers Govt by ayomidegambari(m): 12:39pm On Aug 21, 2015 |
AUGUST 21, 2015 : CHUKWUDI AKASIKE. THE Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, on Thursday, dismissed the suit filed by a former governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, challenging the setting up of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to probe his administration. The State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, had constituted the Justice George Omereji-led judicial commission of inquiry to probe the sale of assets belonging to the state by the Amaechi administration. But Amaechi had gone to court to challenge the setting up of the commission of inquiry to probe the immediate past government. However, Justice Simeon Amadi, who delivered judgment in the suit, affirmed that the judicial commission of inquiry was not established to investigate the personal activities of the former governor. Justice Amadi added that the commission was established to investigate the previous actions of government as they affected the people of the state. According to him, Wike, by the provisions of the law, is empowered to establish the judicial commission of inquiry to investigate previous actions of government. Justice Amadi specifically said that there was no law preventing a state government from finding out how the state’s resources were spent. On the assertion by Amaechi that the 30 days set aside for the sitting of the judicial commission of inquiry will deny him fair hearing, Justice Amadi maintained that the number of days set aside for the commission did not breach his (Amaechi) right to fair hearing. According to him, since Amaechi has yet to file a memorandum before the commission and has not appeared before it, the former governor cannot complain of not being given a fair hearing. The court stated that the 30 days set aside for the commission of inquiry were not sacrosanct and could be extended. The court described Amaechi’s suit as being speculative because the former governor failed to prove the injuries he had suffered as a result of the establishment of the commission of inquiry. Amadi added that the terms of reference of the commission did not accuse the former governor of crime – contrary to the former governor’s claim. He pointed out that the former governor was not on trial, saying, “The judiciary is not only the last hope of the common man, but it is also the last hope of the mighty and the movers and shakers of democracy. Those who by the benevolence of the judiciary got to power should resist the temptation to emasculate the judiciary.” However, the Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Emmanuel Aguma, explained that with the court ruling, the commission of inquiry could begin its sitting and promised that it would be fair to all parties. Aguma pointed out that the court decision on the matter had shown that no claimant could run to a court to stop the “legitimate business” of a judicial commission of inquiry. But Amaechi’s counsel, Mrs. Winifred Enyinnaya, said the former governor would appeal against the judgment. www.punchng.com
