Politics / Benue: Gov Ortom Emerges Victorious As Tribunal Strikes Out Tarzoor’s Petition by BenueBlog(f): 4:44pm On Sep 21, 2015
The governorship election petition tribunal in Benue State has struck out the petition brought before it by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the last general elections, Terhemen Tarzoor.

Tarzoor had approached the tribunal challenging the eligibility of Ortom to contest the 11 April, 2015 Governorship polls in the state and is praying the tribunal to declare Ortom’s votes invalid and return him as winner of the polls.

Delivering the judgement today, Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Elizabeth Karatu ruled that on whatever condition, Ortom was qualified to contest.

That the petitioner had failed to provide evidence to the petition including PDP membership register which could have shown that Ortom was still in PDP as at when he contested the elections, therefore Ortom was qualified by Sec 138 (1a) of the constitution.

The petition was hereby struck out, and dismissed and Ortom’s Certificate of Return restored.

Politics / Benue Assembly Summons Blogger Over Revealing Publication by BenueBlog(f): 6:57am On Sep 19, 2015
Benue State House of Assembly has summoned Ati Terkula, owner and publisher of atiterkula., over a publication on his site ( https://atiterkula./2015/09/13/okpokwu-local-government-crisis-the-untold-story  ) that revealed alleged corruption involving the Assembly Deputy Speaker, Hon James Okefe and an aide to state Governor, Samuel Ortom.

The publication which broke on the Benue blogosphere alleged that Hon Okefe and the Special Adviser to Governor Ortom On Ethics and Value Re-orientation were conniving to demand for a share of the allocation to Okpokwu Local Government from the Chairman, Barr Chris Idu.

The blogger was therefore summoned to appear before the House next week Tuesday 22nd September 2015 along side the Local Government Chairman in question “to throw more light on the allegations” which the house already adjudged to have emanated from the Chairman.

Following the development, several people have reacted with many questioning why the Assembly have excluded the Deputy Speaker in its investigation.

David Tyona said ” these Assembly members are jokers. They invited a blogger to do what? They want to cover the tracts of the Deputy Speaker abi?

Terver Uza said “Like seriously? No more laws or policies to pass and implement? They seem to be pushing their luck too far. I see some schooling next week.”

Linus Ojechema said “Yet he (Hon. Okefe) wants to be a judge in his own cause? The charges levied are weighty. Ordinary they should go to the an executive investigation committee of the state government and not to his colleagues in the House of Assembly. It is beyond calling the Chairman to the State House of Assembly so that he could use that cover to achieve his aim. It is for the people of Benue to judge.”

It remains to be seen how this unfolds as recent events have shown dictatorial tendencies for the Assembly to shield themselves from negative media attention. Recall that just a few months ago, Channels Television’s correspondent, Pius Angbo was reportedly ordered out from the Benue State Assembly chamber by the Speaker, Hon Terkimbi Ikyange.

According to channels, the ban order was not unconnected to an earlier report showing a free for all fight the Benue lawmakers resorted to during a plenary over the House leadership.

Even after apologising to the national TV giant, question marks remain over their ability to tolerate media reports that are not palatable to their political course as shown in this latest incident.

Crime / Daylight Robbery In Makurdi, Residents Terrified (Photos) by BenueBlog(f): 9:01am On Sep 15, 2015
Residents of Makurdi, the Benue state capital were left in shock yesterday , when armed robbers stormed the town in broad daylight.

At about 2:50pm, a gang of about five robbers who used a Toyota Camry Sedan (pictured below) snatched a bag containing a huge sum of money belonging of a first bank customer, in north bank area of the town. As they made away with the cash, Policemen stationed at Balcony Parks and Gardens got a tip-off by Okada riders and intercepted them along Otukpo road.

After a serious gun battle, two members of the gang were arrested while three escaped, and over N2 million recovered from them. The arrested suspects were then taken to the state police headquarters.

In another incident, at about 5:40am today, gunshots were heard in the area opposite the College of Health Sciences. A lady was also heard pleading and crying.

As residents came out, they discovered an emotionally traumatised lady who had just been robbed of her belongings while returning home after studying overnight in school.

The area is dominated by Benue State University students and is a soft target for armed robbers who use motorcycles to hunt down unsuspecting victims, mostly females.

This calls for increased surveillance by security personnel to protect the lives and property of Makurdi residents who are no doubt terrified by these occurrences.

Politics / Revealed? Buhari’s Ministerial Nominees From Benue by BenueBlog(f): 8:48am On Sep 15, 2015
As the nation awaits the unveiling of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees, which he has repeatedly promised to constitute before the end of this month, palpable anxiety, lobbying, desperation and intrigues have seized the entire political scene.

Already, it has been reported that the President has sent a total of 36 names to the Department of State Services, DSS for screening and whilst the identities of the nominees are top secret, we will look at some notable personalities from Benue State who are likely have been nominated.

1. Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh

Chief Audu Ogbeh’s 39-year old political career has seen him rise through the ranks from state assembly member in 1979 to being minister and culminating as chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005.

Ever since leaving the PDP, the Otukpo-born politician has been an Elder statesman in the All Progressives Congress, APC and also a close confident of President Buhari.

With the President’s custom of appointing his close friends, it won’t be surprising to see Chief Ogbeh’s name on the list of ministerial nominees.

2. Professor Torkuma Steve Ugbah

Prof Ugbah appeared on the political scene after spending over 30 years in the US when he vied for the Benue Governorship seat in 2011 against former Governor Gabriel Suswam. Although he lost, the professor of marketing has retained his close ties with Senator George Akume who happens to be the biggest power broker in Benue State in the last 10 years.

Also in the last gubernatorial elections, Prof Ugbah served as the Director General of Governor Ortom’s campaign organisation. He had contested the primaries alongside Governor Ortom and even though he disputed the outcome initially, he later worked to ensure the victory of the APC candidate at the polls. He remains favourite to clinch the ministerial slot for Benue State.

3. Dr Mathaias Oyigeya

Dr. Oyigeya, a psychiatrist by training was the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi during which his outstanding performance brought him to limelight.

After his tenure as Medical Director, he contested for the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP but lost to anointed one, Prince Terhemen Tarzoor as did Governor Samuel Ortom. He then switched to the APC before the governorship election and helped close the gap between the two parties in Benue South Senatorial zone which contributed in ensuring victory for the APC.

4. Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN

This might surprise many, but the former Minister of Justice under late President Umaru Yar’Adua is a die hard politician.

Chief Aondoakaa announced his departure from the PDP early this year to focus on private practice and business but he has been winning and dinning with the kith and kin of APC.

The 53 year old was part of the Benue delegation that visited the president shortly after his victory at the polls and is rumoured to have contributed significantly financially in the gubernatorial elections in Benue State.

5. Rt Hon Emmanuel Jime

A former Speaker of the BNSHA (1992 – 1993) and a former House of Reps Member (2007 – 2015), Hon Emmanuel Jime has been around for a while. He unsuccessfully contested the botched governorship primaries of the APC in Benue State and after a short legal battle, agreed to sheath his sword and withdraw his case against Governor Ortom.

Even though he claimed that he withdrew the case out of his volition, it is rumoured that the intervention of President Buhari into the matter may have included some offers on the table, one of which may have been a ministerial appointment.

Politics / Mwuese Mnyim Helps Husband On The Farm (Photos) by BenueBlog(f): 12:44pm On Aug 30, 2015
Benue’s youngest commissioner, Barr Mrs Mwuese Mnyim has demonstrated her down to earth nature as she was pictured working on the farm.

The pictures which were shared by her grateful husband showed the Commissioner for women affairs and social development, getting down to her domestic responsibilities despite her new status and tight schedule.

This sure is an example to all women and has demonstrated the new approach to governance as canvassed by the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom who has constantly reminded government appointees to shun flamboyant lifestyle and all tendencies to amass wealth.

Barr Mwuese Mnyim is just 31 years. Until her appointment, she was a lecturer with the Faculty of Law, Benue State University, Makurdi.

Politics / Breaking: BSU Medical Students Besiege Vc’s Office With Coffin Of Dead Colleague by BenueBlog(f): 8:13am On Jul 25, 2015
Medical Students in Benue State University, Makurdi have deposited the coffin of their dead colleague at the office of the vice chancellor in protest.

BENUE.COM.NG understands that their colleague, Idoko Nicholas Inalegwu died in an accident under controversial circumstances after receiving the news of his withdrawal from medical school after spending 10 years.

Idoko was withdrawn for failing a haphazardly organised resit exam that has bedevilled medical students in the institution over the years.

Speaking under anonymity in a telephone conversation, one of the students said they believe that Idoko took his own life because he couldn’t bear the news that his 10 years in medical was in vain.

“He had been talking about it, that he wish he died a painless death. The school have finished him. There is no where in the world that a medical student is withdrawn after spending 10 years.” He said.

Our source said the students had complained about the manner in which exams were conducted, where resit exams were prolonged for up to one whole year as against the stipulated six weeks, with no efforts to engage the students.

After spending 12 years without graduation, that many of the students in the medical school have become disillusioned,  frustrated, depressed and some have attempted suicide due to the stagnation and irregularities but the school management was continuously adamant about the psychological effects of their long stay in medical school.

The students, after an altercation at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary, obtained the coffin of their dead colleague marched to the VC’s office, vowing not to leave until their grievances with bother around the haphazard conduct of exams, manipulation of results, withdrawals and accreditation, are resolved.

All efforts to reach the vice chancellor for comments have been abortive.

Politics / PHOTOS: Benue Assembly Lawmakers Fight Dirty Over Defection, House Leadership by BenueBlog(f): 7:40pm On Jun 23, 2015
Lawmakers at the Benue State House of Assembly clashed on Tuesday following a letter addressed to the Speaker by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to appoint majority leader for the Assembly.

The APC and the Peoples Democratic Party’s free for all fight at plenary started when the Speaker of the Benue Assembly, Mr Terkimbi Kyange, read the APC’s letter in which it claimed majority after a lawmaker of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defected into its fold, which gave it a marginal lead over the PDP.

The lawmaker in the eye of the storm, Mr Nick Eworo, hinged his defection on his expulsion from the PDP at the local government level.

The APC thereby appointed the member representing Makurdi South State Constituency, Mr. Benjamin Adanyi, as Majority Leader; Nick Eworo, representing Obi State Constituency as Deputy Majority Leader while the member representing, Vandeikya, Titus Uba, as Chief Whip of the House.

The PDP lawmakers quickly arrested the reading of the letter via a motion to declare the seat of Mr Eworo vacant in line with Section 190 of the 1999 constitution.

Points of order for and against the motion of the PDP lawmakers to declare Mr Eworo’s seat vacant flew from all directions.

Mr Kyange then overruled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers’ motion, declining the request to declare the said member’s seat vacant.

The APC-PDP clash soon degenerated into a free for all physical combat and fighting, while some female lawmakers scampered for safety after heated argument with other colleagues.

The Sergeant At-Arm quickly removed the mace while fighting was going on.

However, a legislator, Tema Kester, on behalf of the PDP lawmakers vowed to resist the move which they described as a rape on the constitution.

The Speaker adjourned sitting till Thursday.

Romance / “lesbian” Photo Of Benue Girls Causes Social Media Uproar by BenueBlog(f): 8:52pm On Jun 08, 2015
What started out as an innocent birthday wish to a dear friend quickly degenerated into a free for all.

One Wueseter posted birthday wishes to her supposedly close friend, Yanfa with a awkward picture of them touching their tongues with each other in a manner that suggested a little more than the friends intended.

She wrote:
This pix says it all. “How much i love you, How much you mean to me, How precious you are to me”. You have been a very good sister and friend to me. Been with me in and out, front and back. One this special day of yours i pray God to bless and grant you all your heart desires. Keep you real as always and forever beautiful. My Love for you is real baby girl”

While some simply commented “Happy Birthday “, most people found it disgusting. Here are some of the comments…

Igomu Adams commented:
wait wait waaaaaiiiiiittttttt!!!! wer u guyz lik tongue to tongue in dis pix?

Kersha Atu commented:
Girls are terrible these days…

Wanter Tor-Uja commented:
I’m one of the most liberal people on the planet…. and this picture irritates me. It’s in very poor taste my dear. Granted all things are lawful, but not all things are expedient.

Sam Ijoho commented:
Is this really necessary..?
If you have a ‘reasonable’ sense of humour, you would know that the society we live in, is in serious war with ‘morality’, decadence and as such should understand better than to post a picture of such controversial disposition.. Unless of course, YOU POSTED EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEANT.

What do you think, is it ok?
