Sports / Ronaldo Declares War On Lionel Messi, Says Battle Is Just Starting by Bethel80: 8:59am On Dec 04, 2019
The last has not been heard of the 2019 Balon d'or which was won by Barcelona Legend, Lionel Messi. Messi won his sixth Balon d'or title yesterday and became the only played to win six Balon d'or titles. Cristiano Ronaldo finished third while Virgil Van Dijk finished second. This has been eliciting reactions from all quarters and Ronaldo was not left out.

Ronaldo did not attend the ceremony because he was to receive an award in Italy as the Most Valuable Player of the year after his stellar performance for Juventus since he joined from Real Madrid. Just after receiving his award, journalists met him at the exit of the auditorium and the question was asked if Messi's victory meant the rivalry between them has ended. Ronaldo replied: " It hasn't finished yet, it is just starting."

Virgil Van Dijk was asked if Ronaldo's absence meant that he had one rival less. His answer caused as stir as he said Ronaldo was never a rival. Ronaldo's response was a classic dual response to Van Dijk's comment and Messi's victory. Last year, Ronaldo lost the award to his former Real Madrid team mate, Luka Modric, although he had a great year for Juventus and for Portugal, a development some analysts attributed to his departure from Real Madrid.

Ronaldo's comment is still trending many hours after the Balon d'or awards

Sports / Uchenna Kanu Sets Record In USA: Scores 25th Hat-trick, Becomes All-time Scorer by Bethel80: 9:49am On Nov 04, 2019
Super Falcons striker, Uchenna Kanu has set a new record in the NAIA League in USA. The Southeastern University striker scored her 147th goal in the league and became the all-time collegiate record scorer for most goals scored in a single school.

She scored a header against South Carolina Beaufort in an 8-0 win and got a hatrick in the process, thereby beating the record set by Julia Schojan of Fisher College in 2017.

The Abia State born Southeastern University goal queen scored her 25th hatrick and her 32nd goal this season.

For the 17th time in her career in the US, she was awarded The Sun offensive player of the week. Last week, she scored five goals and had four assists in the process.

At the WAFU Cup, Uchenna scored 10 goals for the Falcons and was an integral member of the team who made it to the round of 16 at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France.

Reacting to the feat set his player, Southeastern University's head coach, Randy Belli says Uche is a special player "Uche is a special player. We expect her to score every in every game. It is a heavy burden to bear as a player. She has set that record in three and a half years; she is a first class player and we are very proud of her."

Uchenna Kanu thanked her team mates and said they make her job easier on the field and off the field.

Uchenna scores most of her goals with her head because of her height.

Sports / 2019 Nigeria Women's League Winners Will Embark On A One-week Tour In Spain by Bethel80: 11:26pm On Oct 30, 2019
The winner of the 2019 Nigeria Women's Professional League will embark on a week tour in Spain as part of the NWPL/La Liga Partnership. This was disclosed by the Chairperson of the league, Aisha Falode at the draws for the Super Four Tournament in Lagos.

Falode said that the partnership was not all about money but technical: "Aisha Falode: "The partnership with the La liga is not monetary but technical. The winner of the NWPL 2019 Super Four Tournament will go on a one week tour to Spain."

The deal with La Liga will also see La Liga sending a technical expert who will come from Spain to train local coaches and update their knowledge of the game in order to improve the standard of football in the league

"We also have an agreement with La liga to send in technical expert from Spain to train NWPL Coaches as we want them updated and upgraded."

As expected, the media has interest in what is happening in the league and Falode appeals to them to come closer and work hand in gloves with the league to make it better

"I want to appeal to the media to commend us when we do good and if you must criticise, please make sure it's constructive as it will help us do better."

Aisha Falode also lamented the absence of fans at different NWPL venues: "The only support we get in Nigeria is only on social media. Even when we make entrance free and make publicity people still don't come out to watch but they easily condemn and suggest solutions to problems they have no idea of."

Many fans would love to see the league on TV, a mission thinks is difficult but not impossible "having games on TV is very expensive, to show a game live on TV will cost as much as N9m. When the Laliga first started, it was only one TV Station that offered to show the matches free."

The season, the league was abrided to cut operating costs and time. Going forward, Falode said the league is looking forward to have a straight league soon

"We are looking forward to having a straight league in no time. Having to pay over N2m every week for referee's indemnities isnt easy. The CAF Women's Champions League is in the pipeline."

The NWPL Super Four Tournament begins on Friday with Adamawa Queens, Confluence Queens, Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens contending for the title. Bayelsa Queens are defending champions

Sports / Interim Coach Names Asisat Oshoala As New Falcons Captain by Bethel80: 9:11am On Sep 18, 2019
In what many have described as a show of shame, interim coach, Christopher Danjuma, have announced that Asisat Oshoala is the new captain of the team. He said he has not decided on the assistant will be.

When this announcement was made, players were stunned but were forced to clap grudgingly because a government official was there.

Nigerians keep asking why Desire Oparanozie who is the captain of Guingamp of France was not invited to Falcons last game and their next two games.

Swedish Coach, Thomas Dennerby left the side over what he termed "interference" in team selection amongst other things.

With this development, it is not hard to see why Dennerby may have left.

Fans have expressed displeasure with the announcement on social media and on the Super Falcons Twitter page
Sports / Enyimba 0-0 Al Hilal: Toothless Enyimba's Chance On The Line by Bethel80: 6:33pm On Sep 15, 2019
Enyimba football club's chance of moving to the next round of the CAF Champions League suffered a setback following a 0-0 with 27-time Sudanese Champions, Al Hilal

Enyimba started brightly looking to get the opening goal and came close in the 3rd when Nelson Ogbonnaya headed Stanley Okorom's freekick to the side net. In the 7th minute, Stanley Okorom's freekick did little to trouble Yonis Hassan in for Al Hilal.

Enyimba's efforts almost paid off as Stanley Dimgba's cross into the box into the box could not be met by blue shirts in the box as the goal literarily begged to be converted.

Al Hilal's defense made Enyimba to resort to long balls as Oladapo's and Okorom's long range efforts missed the net in the 14th and 16 minutes respectively.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 20th minute when Nazar Hamid was shown a straight red card by Congolese referee, Jean Jacques for a hitting Daniel Darkwah who was not with the ball.

Stanley Okorom's frequent crosses into the box were wasted as no blue shirt in the box made effort to connect.

In the 41st minute, Onuwa sent a through pass to Samson Obi who failed to convert. In the 45th minute, Onuwa sent a fine pass to Reuben Bala who came face-to-face with Yonis but failed to convert

The second half started with Enyimba pressing for a goal but missed chances. Enyimba had a scare in the 68th minute when Al Hilal got their first chance of the game but failed to convert from a one-on-one position.

The introduction of Martins Usule for Onuwa gave spark to the Enyimba attack as they pushed for a goal with Usule coming close many times.

Enyimba's efforts proved abortive as the game came to a close.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria will re-examine the closure of her embassy in Colombo in 2017 in view of the important relationship the country has with Sri Lanka.

In his remarks, the outgoing High Commissioner said he had spent four out of his 30-year career in diplomatic service in Nigeria.

He said his period in Nigeria was remarkable in several ways, stressing that he enjoyed the support and cooperation of Nigerians, and was greatly assisted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Raveenthiran said that his country has a lot to offer Nigeria in the areas of counter-terrorism, medical tourism and higher education.

Are we not sons of a father? Why bring pain to our mother? You are banished, xenophobia.

Have you not heard? Head you not have? We are sons, sons, sons, of a father. Take away that sword
The museum calls - there you know we are one - yes we are. Amnesia is wicked. You are banished, xenophobia

Banish xenophobia - a traitor! a traitor! a traitor! amongst brothers? We banish you xeno - yes we do

Stop, think, act - banish xenophobia
It's a climax
Cast off the impostor
Enthrone the heir - LOVE
To him it belongs
Xeno what? Not one of our sons.
To the dungeon, to the dungeon
Banish xenophobia

Sports / African Games Final: Failure Is Not An Option Says Emeka Chinonso by Bethel80: 8:47am On Aug 30, 2019
With the African Games final coming later today, Flying Eagles striker, Emeka Chinonso has stated that failure is not an option for him. The wonder kid of the Flying Eagles who has so far been impressive for the team in the 2019 African Games in Morocco is today a year older.

Today happens to be the final of the football event in the ongoing Rabat 2019 and the Flying Eagles of Nigeria will be facing Burkina Faso to determine who will clinch the Gold medal of the male football category.

Speaking to Bellsnews, the tall lanky Flying Eagles forward Emeka Chinoso said: "It is a wonderful day for me, first of all I thank God for life and agility, I am so happy because it is a memorable day for me looking at my strides in my career so far.

Today we are playing in the final against Burkina Faso, I am very optimistic about us clinching to the gold medal as the winners. I have always said it within me that failure is not an option for me, we have our eyes set on the trophy."

He goes further to say what winning the trophy would mean for him.

"Winning the trophy definitely means a lot to me, my career and my person as well. We are hoping that the luck of favour will knock on the doors of the Flying Eagles today as we prepare to soar high in victory today."

All I wish for on my birthday been today is for us to win the game. I want to make my country; parents, Brooke House FC of London and all Nigerians back at home proud of us."

Emeka Chinoso concluded by saying: "I want to win my first international trophy in my career which I am solely determined to pull in my very best today as we walk as team to victory."

Sports / Hello Gernot Rohr: Come And Take Nigeria's Luka Modric by Bethel80: 6:31pm On Aug 28, 2019
Nigeria is blessed with abundant talents in football. The country has been ranked as one of the highest exporters of footballers in Africa and the world. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the senior men's national team, the Super Eagles, has an array of stars that makes other African countries jealous. The team is blessed with good strikers, midfielders and defenders.

The engine room of any football team is the midfield. There, defence and attack is given shape. Creativity in midfield is the heart of any team, a prerequisite to goal scoring. Talking about the Super Eagles, the creative spark in the team is gradually fading like worn-out embers.

Despite the audition of many players for the team's creative role, none has fully provided that creative skill Nigerians and the team desire. Since Austin Okocha retired from the national team, nobody has replicated Okocha's artistry in the Super Eagles midfield. Players like Nosa Igiebor; Mikel Obi, Rabiu Ibrahim and recently, Alex Iwobi have been given the creative role of the team. They did all they could but more is needed. With Coach Gernot Rohr exhausting his options in Europe, it is time for him to come home and see that what he is expecting to see in Europe can be seen here at home.

There is a Nigerian, playing in the NPFL, who can give coach Gernot Rohr what has eluded the team. His name is Chukwuka Onuwa.

Onuwa plays for Enyimba FC of Aba. He was a fans' favourite at his former club, MFM FC of Lagos and still is. Since he joined Enyimba, he has, again, endeared himself to the fans. Onuwa's sheer intelligence on the ball is a joy to behold; his passing accuracy is impressive.

A locked down defence is no problem to him because he has an intellectual key to unlock any defence. How he does it, nobody knows.

Playing in a role just behind the strikers and in front of a solid two-man defensive midfield, Onuwa roams and performs wonders from the right or left side of midfield. With the vision of an eagle, he spots openings and sneaks in passes to his strikers.

A football analyst said of Onuwa: "He rotates in midfield like the earth's seamless orbit round the sun. Where there are no chances, he creates them." Surely, he is the best creative midfielder in the league.

He needs a sweeper like Wilfred Ndidi and a tireless marker like Oghenekaro Etebo, then allow him to create the chances - the kind of player strikers love.

Coach Gernot Rohr should see this NPFL wonder and feast his eyes on good and highly technical football from the lad.

The Eagles need Chukwuka Onuwa. Judging from what we saw at the last African Cup of Nations, Gernot Rohr should be worried.

Hardly does a player receive sincere ovation from fans in a game where he did not score - Onuwa does.

His lovely chip over was a bedrock to Sikiru Olatunbosun's CNN Goal of The Week. That classic turn and the world class chip over that followed it surely got the world talking.

With fast wingers in the team like Ahmed Musa, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Kalu, Moses Simon and Henry Onyekuru, the Eagles attack would be one of the most dreaded strike force on the continent; with a creative midfielder who knows the job.

Onuwa's deft touches and his lovely chips over the defence line of opponents is a joy to behold. Nobody watches him and goes home unhappy.

He is called the Nigerian Luka Modric because of his similarity in playing style with Modric. incidentally, the Real Madrid star is his role model.

If Zinedine Zidane of Real Madrid and the Croatian National Team Coach, Zlatco Dalic, are happy that they have Luka Modric in their team, definitely, coach Gernot Rohr should be happy that a Nigerian version of Luka Modric is available for selection to play for the Super Eagles.
