An annual dog meat festival in south-west China has begun, amid uproar on the part of animal rights
activists.
About 10,000 dogs will be slaughtered for their meat at the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin in Guangxi
province on Sunday and Monday to mark the summer solstice, state media said.
One retired school teacher from Tianjin hit the headlines when she purchased dozens of dogs to save them.
Residents and vendors in Yulin say the animals are killed in a humane way.
Activists say the killing is cruel and an online campaign to ban the festival has been signed by more than 3.8
million people so far and the campaign has attracted considerable support this year from celebrities both
domestic and foreign.
Celebrities including British comedian Ricky Gervais have spoken out on Twitter with the hashtag
#StopYuLin2015. Chinese pop star Chen Kun and actor Yang Mi have said they are joining the campaign on
micro blogging site Weibo.
And Chinese actor Fan Bingbing and others posted a video online against the festival.
The tradition of eating dog meat dates back four or five hundred years in China, South Korea and other
countries, as it is believed to ward off the heat of the summer months, according to state news agency
Xinhua.
However, this festival began in recent years, Xinhua said.
City officials have distanced themselves from the gathering. "Some residents of Yulin have the habit of
coming together to eat lychees and dog meat during the summer solstice," the city's news office wrote on
Weibo.
"The 'summer solstice lychee and dog meat festival' is a commercial term, the city has never [officially]
organised a 'dog meat festival'," it added.
As in recent years, some animal lovers resorted to buying some of the dogs in order to rescue them.
Yang Xiaoyun, retired school teacher, paid about 7,000 yuan ($1,100; £710) to save 100 dogs on Saturday.
The BBC's Celia Hatton in Beijing says this kind of dispute puts the government in a really difficult position.
The glorified consumption of dog meat generates a lot of negative foreign media reports, embarrassing the
authorities. Also, the dog meat industry has been accused of many underhand tactics, including the illegal
capture of family pets to use as food.
But at the same time, the government is wary of the increasingly sophisticated animal rights movement, she
adds. Animal rights activists in China have formed a cohesive network on social media that extends to many
foreign animal welfare groups. China's leaders do not want to encourage such a movement amid a wider
crackdown on civil disturbance of any kind.

Elections has come and gone, we all thank God for the peaceful conduct of the election before, during and after the election, irrespective of some minor incident here and there.

Before the elections, there was no time I heard or read of Buhari being in Daura for anything whatsoever, all I read was meetings being held at Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja, but after the general has gotten what he wanted from 'Nigerians', he has relocated to his country home turning Daura to a mecca of sort.

I do read about robbery experience of people here on nairaland and I guess some peeps do learn one or two lessons from the stories been shared here, for that reason, I decides to share my own experience so nairalanders can learn some lessons from it also.

I experienced this sometime in February this year, it was on a bright Thursday morning, my friend and I where off duty so we decided to carry out some activities that has been pending due to our tight work schedule, among the activities we slated to carryout was to collect our PVC and change two tyres in the car. For those familiar with Abuja, we headed towards Wuse zone2 to collect our PVC unfortunately the INEC ad hoc staff there said our card isn't ready yet, on our way leaving the INEC center, I sighted a Firstbank building and we had a third party cheque of #150,000, I drove to the bank so as to withdraw the said amount. When I got to the bank premises, the security man on duty requested I pack outside which I did by facing the car towards the bank's fence.

My friend and I walked into the banking hall and in no time we were done with the transaction and out of the bank, my friend was with the money in a small nylon (the type banks normally package money with), as we stepped into the car my friend kept the money under the car sit of where he was sitting.

Because of the position of the car it was imperative I must reverse the car to proceed with my other engagement, so I reversed and in less than 500 meters drive, I started hearing sound from the passenger's back tyre, I stopped and told my friend to check what was making the noise , he checked and told me it was a bathroom slippers that had a nail that has pierced the tyre and that if he removes the slippers, the tyre will go down completely, I looked ahead and saw a Total fuel station where they also sell tyre, I made a u-turn in front of custom headquarters and entered the fuel station and parked where they sell tyre and also does wheel balancing and alignment.

My friend alighted from the car to call the tyre seller, I also alighted but just stood behind the car, in less than a minute I was standing there, my instinct just told me to look behind me,when I did, I saw the door of the car I just alighted from open, which I was very sure I closed and saw a man walking away from the car, immediately I screamed, he just ran towards a bike that was waiting inside the fuel station, that was how they zoomed off, he has already picked the 150k, I tried chasing them with the help of car buying fuel, but due to they were on bike, they were able to manoeuvre the traffic.

I finally found out that they were the once that planted the nails behind the tyre knowing fully well that I must reverse when leaving.They pierced three 4inches nails through a double folded bathroom slippers then used black nylon to conceal it before placing it behind the tyre. They were watching my friend and I as we left the bank, they saw that the money was with him and they also observed that he kept the money under the sit.

Guess you guys learnt one or two lessons from this story, so that you don't fall victim to their evil antics.
