Politics / Social Democratic Party (SDP) Vission, Structure And Strength..do You Think This by DennisIkpi2222: 4:04am On Mar 17, 2018
Here is Professor Tunde Adeniran, a former Minister of Education and the reason he joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP)

Social Democratic Party (SDP) Vission:

The new vision is to give effect to what we believe in. We believe in a sanitised political system where the rule of law prevails; where there is due regard for justice, equity and fairness in the political process. And we also believe that it is long overdue for this country to have genuine democracy. Genuine democracy can only be premised on what we regard as internal party democracy. We believe that unless and until you have that, we are going nowhere and things will just be getting worse. So, there is a clear vision of dedication to certain core values that we believe we need to actualise through the appropriate framework. That was what led to the choice of SDP. Of course, if this was not lacking where we are coming from, there wouldn’t have been any need to leave, because when certain things are happening and you have done your best to try to correct them or try to effect a change, but that is impossible. So, some of us just don’t believe in doing politics just for the fun of it. We believe in changing lives; in making sure that we transform the system and get a situation whereby the human dignity and human integrity and all that is edifying are promoted. I also believe that for those of us who believe in certain principles that we cannot compromise, that there is just no choice than to move on.

Party structure and strength:

After the banning of 13 prospective parties by the administration of Ibrahim Babangida in 1989. A few of the "illegal" associations decided to re-align. The People's Front of Nigeria, People's Solidarity Party and the Nigerian Labor Party were the three main inchoate groups that emerged to form the core constituency of the new SDP. The leadership of the party was mostly dominated by Northern Nigerians, with Babagana Kingibe elected party chairman in 1990 over his rival Mohammed Arzika. On the other hand, the electoral strength of the party lain in the Yoruba states and Imo and Anambra states. The party won 57% of the Senate seats in the 1992 National Assembly election, and won 53% of the seats of the House of Representatives in the same election. The party was largely financed by the Federal Government and a few individuals, such as Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, Francis Nzeribe and M.K.O. Abiola. In its primary elections, Yar'adua collated about 480,000 votes dominating his primary opponent, Olu Falae in the first round.[1] Another financier, Abiola (a former member of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons and chairman of the National Party of Nigeria) won the primary election on March 1993, after the first election was canceled. Abiola's contested the national election which was later annulled, a seemingly coherent legacy of Nigeria's swivelling and revolving door like political landscape.

Among former members, Atiku Abubakar, Jerry Gana, Abubakar Rimi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Umaru Yar'Adua, Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila, Dapo Sarumi, and Mohammed Arzika later became senior figures in the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Do you think this party has what it takes to change Nigeria for good?

Nairaland / General / Senator Oluremi Tinibu Seeks Better Life For Nigerian Women by DennisIkpi2222: 3:36am On Mar 17, 2018
Senator Oluremi Tinibu Yesterday spoke at the 25 town hall meeting of the Lagos Central Senatorial District where the constituency endorsed her for another term, she said the government must review its policies to ensure more opportunities and choices for advancement for Nigerian women.

In her remarks entitled, “Gender Equity and the Right to Economic Freedom”, the senator said: “we must eliminate all gender discrimination clauses in existing legislation.”

She urged Nigerian women to speak up and dialogue.

She said: “The inability of women to access loans and credit facilities is widespread. In spite of data showing women to be better managers and entrepreneurs, the deterrence on women seeking to own land and property is obvious in the constitution.

“Women are prone to trafficking, sexual exploitation and gender-based violence. There is the inaccessibility of education for women, owing to gender stereotype. And where they are educated, they don’t have equal opportunity due to discrimination.

“This is why I am particularly saddened by the statement attributed to some of the girls who escaped the Boko Haram attack, who have given up on education and have stated that they will not be going back to school.

“If we must canvass for accessibility and affordable education for the girl-child, we must ensure that these places of learning are safe and secured.

“As your representative, I remain resolute and committed to the cause of women, gender equity and opportunity for our people in the district and Nigeria as a whole.”

No fewer than 130 widows to undergo the Widows Economic Empowerment Scheme (WEES), with a view to enhancing their livelihood will be sponsored by Tinudu.

The widows will receive N50,000 each to bolster their existing trade or start up a petty trade. Grinding machines will also be made available to them .

The grinding machines are funded by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goal, Hon. Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire.

Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi the leader of the APC Lagos Central Senatorial District congratulated her, saying that the people have passed a vote on her to seek-re-election.

“You have not disappointed us since you started representing us at the Senate. We are not surprised because of your pedigree. Therefore, you have to remain at the Senate to continue to fight for our rights and particularly the rights of women.” He told Tinubu.

He urged the women to emulate Senator Tinubu.

“She is a consistent fighter for the rights of the underprivileged. I am calling on the women to unite and support themselves for the contest for elective position,” he said.

“Women cannot just sit down and expect that they can get to positions or power without coming out to fight for it.”

Business / Innoson Motor’s Chairman Fails To Show Up In Court For Arraignment by DennisIkpi2222: 4:11am On Mar 15, 2018
Chairman of Innoson Group, Innocent Chukuma on Wednesday, for the third time failed to attend his arraignment at Ikeja Special Offices Court in Logos.

According to our source, Justice Mojosola Dada, on February 9, 2018, had issued a bench warrant for Innoson's arrest following his failure to appear in court on January 17 and February 9 to take his plea for fraud charges against him by the Economic by EFCC.

At the resumed hearing of the matter yesterday, Justice Dada revealed in court that Innoson had filed a petition against her to the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Following the petition, the judge said she would not take further steps in the hearing of the case until she responds to the petition.

“I have no personal interest in this case, in fact, I’ll be relieved if this case is taken of me as it will be a reduction of my workload.

“This case is adjourned till Wednesday, April 25, for arraignment,” she said.

Earlier, when the case was called for arraignment, counsel to Innoson Motors Nigeria Ltd, Mr. George Uwechue (SAN), told the court that he had filed four applications in the suit.

Uwechue urged the court to first hear his client’s applications before the automobile boss could be arraigned.
The SAN noted that the EFCC had just served the defense with an amended charge despite a pending appeal in the higher court over the charges.

“We have just been served with the amended charge by the EFCC, My Lord, there is a notice of appeal filed against the order of this court.

“There is also at the Court of Appeal, a notice to stay proceedings on this matter, we were not given adequate time to study the charge.

“The charge is an abuse of court processes, there is a charge pending at the Federal High Court filed against the first defendant by the federal government.

In his response, lead prosecution counsel, A. B. C Ozioko, asked that the arraignment take place as scheduled, noting that the applications filed by the defense were a ploy to delay proceedings.

“The defense running to the NJC is immaterial, this case should not be treated as special, it is like any other case, I hear the first defendant may be in court.

“The defense filed five applications, not four as alleged by the senior advocate.

“On January 15, they filed an application challenging the jurisdiction of this court, on Jan.18, they asked for a mandatory injunction that the EFCC not be heard in any of the application.

“On February 5, they filed another application that your lordship disqualifies herself; on February 9, they filed an application requesting for the stay of execution of the order of the bench warrant; and on February 12, they asked My lordship to dismiss the bench warrant.

“Prof. J. N Mbadugha, the counsel to the 2nd defendant has abused court processes, it is not meant to harass and intimidate the court,” he said.

The EFCC prosecutor noted that the anti-graft agency had responded to the five applications and is ready to proceed with the case despite Innoson evading arrest by the EFCC.

“The presence of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria cannot change the fact that the defendants must be physically present in court, that is the law.

“We made efforts to approach the second defendant by going to Enugu, Nnewi, Abuja and going through the back gate of the Senate and now we are here,” he said.

According to the charge sheet, the defendants committed the offences between 2009 and July 2011 in Lagos.
The EFCC alleged that the defendants with intent to defraud, conspired to obtain by false pretenses containers of motorcycle, spare parts and raw materials property of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) from Mitsui OSK Lines Limited, Apapa, Lagos.

Business / 3 Things People Believe Money Is But Is Not by DennisIkpi2222: 3:39am On Mar 15, 2018
When it comes to the subject of money, many people have different views on the subject let us say it is different strokes for different folks. But there are three misconceptions people have about money which should be cleared

1 Money is Everything: Nothing could be further from the truth because if it was everything Chief M.K.O Abiola of blessed memory was one of the richest men in Africa in his time yet his wealth could not prevent his detention and eventual death in 1998. A wise man said, 'If every problem could be solved by opening your wallet, then it is not a problem it is only an expense'. Money can acquire a lot of things but don't mistake it for everything because if it was Don Cornelius, the creator of Soul Train would not have committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in his Beverly Hills mansion in 2011. Many people have died from too much money than from too little. The long and short of it is that the rich also cry and the rich are not always as happy as the poor expects.

2 Money Is The End: Money is never an end rather it is a means to an end, many millionaires like late Aristotle Onassis built their empires with little or no money of their own rather they built it with financial intelligence and to them money was a vehicle that took them from point A to point B rather than the destination itself

3 Money Is To Be Pursued: It is most amusing when the average Nigerian say they are looking for money or they are pursuing money. The bitter gospel truth is that money is not to be pursued rather it is to be made by solving problems for others for an agreed fee or for meeting the needs of multitudes. A wise man said that 'If one must have any greed it must be the greed of meeting needs'. To be a millionaire one should sell one thing to a million Nigerians and make at least one naira gain on it. In a nutshell, don't run after money, make money run after you by giving quality service to your clients.
