Sports / Pires Propels Significant Reason Zidane Should Take Over At Chelsea by faithdinno: 1:16am On Mar 05, 2019

Gunners legend, Robert Pires has expressed that previous Real Madrid supervisor, Zinedine Zidane ought to supplant Chelsea chief, Maurizio Sarri, at Stamford Bridge so as to handle the "player control" issue at the West London club.

Pires expressed this following Chelsea's 2-1 triumph over Fulham in the Premier League experience on Sunday.

"It's an exceptionally odd circumstance with Chelsea and how they treat their administrators," Pires told Bwin.

"Sarri is an extremely decent director and he performed great with Napoli, however, it's difficult to see him at the club next season. There seems, by all accounts, to be a ton of player control at Chelsea that he is attempting to conquer like many have before him.

"I think Zidane would be an exceptionally decent arrangement at Chelsea. He would request regard from the Chelsea players and control the changing area because of all that he has accomplished both on the pitch as a player and on the seat as an administrator.

"He's a champ and a warrior. He's had incredible achievement in the Champions League which is alluring to the Chelsea proprietor. It would be extremely uplifting news for the Premier League if Zidane moved to England."

Pires included: "It was an unusual circumstance with Sarri and Kepa at Wembley.

"I don't assume I've at any point witnessed that previously. Kepa would not leave the pitch against City.

"It was maybe a misconception, however, it was all around inadequately taken care of and would have certainly been on the players' psyches when they were setting out toward punishments.

"We'll never realize the amount it affected them, however it additionally removed consideration from a much-improved exhibition by Chelsea.

"It's essential to regard the director's choice, regardless of whether we at times don't concur with it as a player. We have to indicate regard and bolster our partners too generally the changing area can be a troublesome spot.

"Sarri is in a troublesome circumstance where he needs to inspire positive outcomes to spare his activity. He may have responded contrastingly and all the more serious in the event that he was increasingly agreeable in his own future at Chelsea.

"I expect Kepa to proceed as the club's first-decision goalkeeper and his vocation will carry on as if it never occurred. He can view himself as fortunate, however, it uncovers a great deal about the player control in the Chelsea changing area that he believed he could do that at Wembley. I expect Sarri to in any case be at the club until the finish of the period and after that, they will choose."

Sports / Atletico Offer 2-in-1 To Secure Morata Deal by faithdinno: 9:11pm On Jan 16, 2019

The rojiblancos are willing to unload both hirings of summer during January, while they continue negotiating the signature of the international forward of Spain.
Atlético de Madrid have intensified their search for Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata and has offered two of his own forwards to the Blues in an attempt to reach an agreement on the line.
Goal understands that the Rojiblancos have proposed Nikola Kalinic and Gelson Martins to Chelsea knowing that Morata will only be let go if a replacement can be found.
Atlético would only allow one of the two to go to West London as part of the Morata agreement, although they hope to download both during the January transfer window.
Kalinic came to the Metropolitan Wanda from AC Milan in August in a deal worth € 15 million (£ 13.3m / $ 17.1m), but has struggled to adapt to the style of Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital.
The Croatia international has scored only three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions and is now ready to continue.
Gelson, meanwhile, signed a six-year contract with Atlético that canceled his contract with Sporting in the midst of the controversy surrounding former club president Bruno de Carvalho.
However, it is likely that Atlético have to pay a fee as compensation, according to reports that Sporting is demanding up to € 105m (£ 93m / $ 120m) for the Portugal international who has contributed with only one goal and not there is assistance in 12 Apparitions for the Simeone side.
The offer of a player as part of the agreement has raised the hope that Atlético can sign Morata, with the club currently in second place at the table of the League willing to pay a loan rate of 3 million euros to ensure up to the end of the season. With an option to make permanent treatment in June.
However, they are only willing to pay half the salary of £ 120,000 per week for Morata, while the Blues insist that Atleti cover the total cost.
Morata spent the weekend in Madrid talking to a variety of potential suitors, although Sevilla has withdrawn from the race due to the cost of the international firm of Spain.
Barcelona has been raised as a possible landing point, although reports suggest that they are now chasing Girona striker Cristhian Stuani as support for Luis Suárez.

The article continues below
The main objective of Maurizio Sarri to replace Morata in his team is Gonzalo Higuain, with the Argentine willing to end his loan period at AC Milan and meet with the manager who trained him during his successful period in Naples.
And speculation about his future accelerated on Wednesday after he missed the Milan team's photo in Saudi Arabia before his meeting with Juventus at the Italian Supercoppa in Jeddah.
It is understood that the Chelsea hierarchy was cooling off with the possibility of hiring Higuain due to the complexity of the agreement given that the forward's club, Juventus, would also be involved, but the player's apparent willingness to change Milan for London could tempt him to secure his signature. .

Sports / David Wagner Retires As Manager Of Huddersfield Town by faithdinno: 11:46am On Jan 15, 2019

Huddersfield Town has announced that manager David Wagner has left the club by mutual consent.
Wagner took over Huddersfield in 2015 and led the club to the Premier League.
But after four years in charge, the 47-year-old retired from his post after discussions with the council.
In a statement issued by the club, President Dean Hoyle said:

"I would like to start by thanking David for all he has accomplished in Huddersfield Town for the past three and a half years, and under his leadership, we have achieved things on the football field that surpass anything in modern memory, and that have gone beyond my wildest expectations as President and as a fanatic.

"Under David's administration, we took this club to the highest position it has had in almost 50 years and created memories that will last forever.

"His accomplishments will put him in the history of Huddersfield Town with big names like Herbert Chapman and Mick Buxton, legendary managers who changed the face of this club."
"As I said before, I had no intention of firing David this season. Subsequently, David, being the great man he is, came to see us and made it clear that he needs a break from the rigors of soccer administration.

"We talked about making that change immediately, but he also made it clear that he would give it all for the rest of the season before leaving in the summer, if we prefer." After a long discussion, we all felt that David was better to stay in the Club until the end of the season, but we have kept the discussions open and now we feel that it is the right time to separate.

"I know that the term" mutual consent "is often synonymous with the manager who is being fired in professional football, but this is a truly joint decision, David has a real and genuine love for this Club and, like me, his principal concern in our talks has been to establish what is best for Huddersfield Town.

"I can not thank David enough for what he has achieved. Together with his family, he will always be a friend to me and to Huddersfield Town. "

The next Huddersfield Premier League match is against Manchester City when assistant coach Mark Hudson will take over the team.

Cazorla inspires Villarreal comeback with 82nd-minute leveller
Santi Cazorla scored twice as Villarreal fought back to take a point in a chaotic 2-2 draw against a lackluster Real Madrid.

Cazorla scored the opener for Villarreal after just four minutes with a curling first time strike, but Madrid responded with a goal of their own just three minutes later as Benzema headed in from close range.
However, Cazorla scored a late second-half leveller to ensure Villarreal escaped with a point that takes them out of the relegation zone and leaves Madrid seven points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Man of the match: Santi Cazorla

Madrid were caught cold after four minutes as Samuel Chukwueze found Cazorla unmarked inside the box who sent a wonderful first time effort past a diving Thibaut Courtois,

Villarreal produced some poor marking of their own as Karim Benzema met a lofted pass from Lucas Vazquez just six yards out, sending Madrid level with a header on seven minutes.

Team news
Santiago Solari’s Real Madrid were dealt a blow as in-form Marcos Llorente was ruled out with injury, but he had Casemiro available again and the Brazilian regained his place in central midfield.
The hosts were unable to maintain their early intensity as Madrid took control of the game through the imperious Luka Modric. Raphael Varane then completed the turnaround after meeting a Toni Kroos free-kick with a bullet header.

Gareth Bale was substituted early in the second half having struggled with a hamstring problem, and as Madrid looked to see out the game, Modric was replaced by centre-back Federico Valverde.
When Lucas Vazquez went through on goal only to be denied by a superb save by Asenjo, Villarreal took the initiative and pressed Madrid with an intensity that they seemed unable to handle, and the returning Casemiro looked out of sorts after a two month absence.

Villarreal eventually punished their opponents' wasteful finishing and fatigue as Santi Cazorla headed in at the back post after an excellent cross from Pablo Fornals, sending their home fans wild and travelling Real supporters towards the exit.

The result means that Real stay fourth in La Liga now seven points adrift of first placed Barcelona, while Villarreal rise out of the relegation zone.

Jurgen Klopp blasted the decision that saw Vincent Kompany stay on the pitch following a lunge on Mohamed Salah as Manchester City beat Liverpool 2-1.

The crucial match was settled by a Leroy Sane winner after a Roberto Firmino goal cancelled out Sergio Aguero's opener.
But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was irritated after referee Anthony Taylor allowed Kompany to stay on the pitch despite his studs-up challenge on Salah:

"I really like Vincent Kompany but how on Earth is that not a red card?" said Klopp.

" He is last man and he goes in. If he hits Mo [Salah] more he is out for the season. It is not easy for the ref and he may not see it how I see it."
"Our expectations are high. We can play better. On the other side it was an intense game. You have to take the game how it is. You can't always dominate it. With a bit more luck we could have got 2-2, which would be perfect for us."

Klopp also remained calm about the result, despite City closing to within four points of them at the top of the table.

"It was not our or City's best game because we both made it difficult for the other team," he continued. "I have already said to the boys this is OK. We lost it but it will happen. Tonight it is not nice but it is not the biggest problem."
Kompany said the performance was more important than closing the gap to four points. "I'm not worried about the result I'm buzzing with the tremendous performance," he told Sky.

And he also defended challenge on Salah, adding: "I thought it was a great challenge, was it not? I got the ball, a little bit of the man but it wasn't naughty. I didn't try to injure him. It was that or let him go through on goal."

Sports / Chelsea Sign Borussia Dortmund Forward For £58m by faithdinno: 7:23pm On Jan 02, 2019
Chelsea have signed Borussia Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic for 64m euros (£58m) but will loan him back to the German club until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old United States international, who was linked with Liverpool and Arsenal, joined Dortmund as a youth player in 2015.

Pulisic has scored nine goals in 23 games for the US.

"It's a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club," he said.

It is the highest transfer fee for an American player, beating the 20m euros Wolfsburg paid for John Brooks in 2017.

Dortmund director Michael Zorc said: "It was always Christian's dream to play in the Premier League.

"That certainly has to do with his American background, and as a result, we were unable to extend his contract.

"Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity."

Pulisic's contract at Dortmund was due to expire in June 2020.
In an emotional statement on Twitter, Pulisic said he will leave Dortmund with a "heavy heart".

"It feels like only yesterday that I arrived in Dortmund as a raw, excited, very nervous but exceptionally proud 16-year-old from a small American town called Hershey," he said.

"I would not be here without the club and their belief in giving young players a chance. Many memorable moments stand out - to have experienced all of them before my 20th birthday, still feels at times like a dream.

"For the next six months, it's all BVB. Please do not doubt my passion, determination and my 110% commitment to the team right until the last ball is kicked this season."

'One of Europe's most sought-after young players'

Pulisic made his Bundesliga debut, aged 17, in January 2016, and two months later won his first USA cap.

He has played 81 games in the German top flight and 20 in the Champions League.

He has scored three goals in 18 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund this season.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia described Pulisic as "one of Europe's most sought-after young players".

"At just 20, we believe he has the potential to become an important Chelsea player for many years to come," she said.

Pulisic is the first major Premier League signing since the transfer window opened on 1 January.

His is the third highest fee paid for a Bundesliga player, after Ousmane Dembele's £135m move from Dortmund to Barcelona in 2017 and Manchester City's £55m deal for Kevin de Bruyne from Wolfsburg in 2015.

Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Dortmund lead the Bundesliga by six points and will face Tottenham in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Sports / Chelsea Reject £13.5m For Callum Hudson-odoi by faithdinno: 1:38am On Dec 30, 2018

Bayern Munich have offered £13.5m plus add-ons for Callum Hudson-Odoi but Chelsea want at least £22.5m.
According to Sky Germany, Borussia Dortmund are also interested in Hudson-Odoi, whose current contract with Chelsea expires in the summer of 2020.
The 18-year-old forward, who joined Chelsea at U8s level, is viewed as one of the best talents in the club's academy and one of the best players the Blues have produced in recent seasons.
Hudson-Odoi played a key role in England's 2017 Under-17 World Cup victory, appearing in all nine matches and setting up three goals in the 5-2 victory over Spain in the final.

Another member of that victorious England team, Jadon Sancho, has gone on to achieve great success in the Bundesliga since leaving Manchester City to join Dortmund in 2017.
Hudson-Odoi made his debut for Chelsea in January 2018 when he came on as a substitute in an FA Cup over Newcastle. He made three more substitute appearances under Antonio Conte, including one in the Premier League against Bournemouth.

Hudson-Odoi made his first Premier League appearance of the season on Wednesday against Watford when he replaced Pedro in the 43rd minute, but he was withdrawn late in the game after suffering a hamstring injury.

He has featured four times in the Europa League under Maurizio Sarri, starting twice.

Hudson-Odoi scored his first senior goal for Chelsea in a 4-0 win over PAOK in the Champions League last month but, afterwards Sarri cautioned that he is not yet ready for the Premier League.

"I don't know if Hudson-Odoi is able for the Premier League at 18, especially in a big team," he said.

"If he's good enough to play in a big team in the Premier League at 18 then he could be the best player in Europe in two years."

The Brazil international scored from the penalty spot to complete his treble as Liverpool thrashed Arsenal at Anfield
Jurgen Klopp admitted he "almost cried" when Mohamed Salah let Roberto Firmino take Liverpool's second penalty to complete his hat-trick in Saturday's 5-1 demolition of Arsenal.
Arsenal was well and truly outclassed at Anfield despite taking an early lead through Ainsley Maitland-Niles, as the Reds moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Firmino hit back with two quickfire goals, before Sadio Mane and Salah – from the penalty spot – had Liverpool 4-1 by half-time.
Klopp was also keen to laud Liverpool's response to initially falling behind, as they bounced back emphatically and swiftly.
"The response [to going behind] was world class," Klopp said. "We stayed calm and really forced the mistakes.

Up next for Liverpool in the Premier League is a trip to defending champions Manchester City on January 3.
Liverpool knows that they will kick-off at the Etihad Stadium at least seven points ahead of Pep Guardiola's side, and if they can avoid defeat they will be in pole position to claim the title for the first time since 1990.

"Well, I think losing sucks and it's never good, but it actually can be a positive if you learn from it so it doesn't happen again the same way," Self, KU's 16th-year coach said.

His words came after his Jayhawks (10-1) squandered a seven-point lead in the final 4 1/2 minutes of an 80-76 loss to No. 18-ranked Arizona State before a crowd of 14,592. That crowd included former Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, the head coach of the Sun Devils football team, as well as Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps, former NBA players Jason Kidd and Grant Hill and current Los Angeles Laker and former Jayhawk Svi Mykhailiuk.
"We didn't close the game right at all," Self added. Hopefully, we'll learn from that, but the reality of it is we weren't going to run the table. Let's not get carried away.

"I hate saying this. You never, ever want to lose, but certainly, you'd rather learn from a non-conference loss than you would a conference loss. Hopefully, we'll learn something from it and get better from it. I think it'll be a good teaching tape for us."

The Jayhawks are breaking for the Christmas holiday and won't be together again until Wednesday night when the players return to Lawrence for a post-break practice. Their next game is against Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse with the Big 12 opener looming Jan. 2 at home against Oklahoma.

"It's not going to affect Christmas, at least with the players, "Self said of the loss, especially disappointing since the Jayhawks led by 12 points late in the first half and eight points at halftime.

"We played well the first half and didn't have as much to show for it I didn't think as far as the score (39-31) indicated, "Self-said. "We were better than them the first half. The second half, they controlled it from the start. Our defense wasn't any good the second half. We didn't make shots. We forgot who our best player was for a key stretch, made some bonehead plays down the stretch."

He also blamed himself for miscommunication during a timeout with 22 seconds left and KU down 78-76.
KU's Lagerald Vick (14 points, just 3 of 11 from three) accepted a pass from Devon Dotson on the wing and gunned a pass past Dotson that resulted in a turnover on an over-and-back call (one that may have been questionable because of a possible deflection by Arizona State). Arizona State's Rob Edwards (15 points, 13 second half) was fouled and sank two free throws with six seconds left to assure a four-point win and a court-storming from the Arizona State fans.

"We were going to try to shoot a three to end it if we could, "Self-said. "I said (in the huddle), 'Run it like black but don't go backdoor.' All Lagerald heard was 'black' and 'black' is the backdoor lob. I screwed that deal up."

Self-said the over-and-back call may have been "an unfortunate break there at the end. We got what we deserved. We didn't get stops or make plays down the stretch."

KU's Dedric Lawson scored 18 points the first half on 8-of-10 shooting and 12 the second on 4-of-5 marksmanship. He finished with a KU career-best 30 points on 12-of-15 shooting. He was 5 of 5 from the line. However, KU attempted just 16 charities, hitting 15. Arizona State (9-2) was 20 of 32, double the attempts.
"It felt like it was a lot more than twice,"Self-said of Arizona State shooting double the charities. "We gave them free points obviously, and I'd have to go back and watch the tape. Everybody thinks they are getting screwed as the game is going on. I'm not going to go into that and say we got one (call) or didn't get one. I'll watch the tape. Certainly, it felt like we had a hard time getting any easy points. We certainly saw them get a lot from the free-throw line or a lot of layups. We didn't have the same opportunities for us."

Arizona State had five players score in double figures: Edwards had 15 points, Zylan Cheatham and Luguentz Dort 13, Romello White 11 and Remy Martin 10.

"That was one of the great sports moments of my life. That's really the best way I can put it," Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley said. His Sun Devils, who were ranked No. 16 at the time, also beat KU last year at Allen Fieldhouse when KU was No. 2.

"This was a huge moment for our basketball program," the fourth-year coach added. "I remember when I first started my first couple of games here. To see what it's like now, it's unreal. To have these memories and our players to have it, it's terrific. The crowd was dynamic. It was off the charts in terms of the electricity in that building. It felt like an NCAA Tournament game for something really important. That's the caliber of athletes and basketball players on the floor."
KU's players took the loss hard. Dotson didn't like the fact he fumbled the hard pass from Vick on the possession in which KU might have hit a three and won the game at the end.

"They defended it well," Dotson said. "He (Vick) tried to kick it (out). We tried to put points on the board. We couldn't convert."

"It's tough. I hate losing," added Dotson, who had 12 points, five assists and five of KU's 16 turnovers. "One thing about me, I always want to win. The first loss is tough. We've got to learn from it."

Noted Lawson, who played just 31 minutes as he had to sit some in the second half after picking up a third foul: "It's very tough, a very tough one. We had the game and let it slip right through our hands. It's behind us. We didn't think we were going to go undefeated. We didn't think we were going to lose here either. It's a learning experience."
KU hit 41.5 percent of its shots, just 7 of 28 from three. Arizona State hit 41.3 percent and was 8 of 21 from three. Arizona State made 20 of its 32 free throws. Arizona State won the board battle 41-40.

Here's a look at the key play by play moments during crunch time:

ASU, which trailed 39-31, at halftime, cut the deficit to three, 43-40 and again 62-59 at 7:24.

Arizona State cut it to two 67-65 on a three by Edwards at 5:50.

With Arizona State up by three, Vick hit a huge three and was fouled by Dort on the play. Vick hit the free throw for a four-point play and KU led 72-65 at 4:58. KU led 74-67 at 4:31; however, Arizona State cut it to 74-73 by the 2:51 mark.
KU's Quentin Grimes missed a three with the score 74-71 and Arizona State's Martin converted right after at 2:48. Following a Lawson turnover, Edwards hit a three to give Arizona State the 76-74 lead at 2:17. Dort then missed two free throws at 1:36. Lawson hit two free throws for Kansas to tie it 76-76 at 1:17.

Martin hit a shot in the lane with 58.6 seconds left to give Arizona State a 78-76 lead. Following an offensive foul by Vick, Dort missed two free throws with 26 seconds left, giving KU the ball down two 78-76.

Vick gunned a pass off Dotson that forced a turnover at 6.9 seconds on KU's ensuing possession. Edwards stepped to the line at 6.1 seconds. He hit two free throws to give Arizona State the four-point lead, 80-76.

Against Espanyol on Saturday, Thomas Partey took advantage to make his feelings clear, despite starting the game. The Ghanaian has struggled for game time this season, falling below Rodrigo Hernandez in the pecking order, but was called upon alongside Angel Correa in a rotating line-up from Diego Simeone.

"Sometimes I feel unhappy at Atletico," he told Gol. The number five has become yet another problem from Atletico to handle as those in charge spend their time-fighting fires after it emerged that Lucas Hernandez is set to depart the club for Bayern Munich in January. Someone has made his feeling clear that the club must do all they can to put a stop to the move, though there is no money available to increase his wages midway through the season. The salary limit has Atletico between a rock and a hard place and the players have known it since August when Diego Costa demanded a pay rise off the back of a strong European Super Cup display and a new deal for Antoine Griezmann, which sees him earn 21 million euros net per year. That is almost three times what Costa earns, and the Spain international is the second best player in the squad. He is not alone either, Jan Oblak wants to improve his conditions from four million euros net per year to become one of the best-paid goalkeepers in the world, in order to match his quality. It is a squad who are looking for better terms and are not only concerned by their salaries. Injuries too have had an impact, with muscular injuries hitting many and details leaking which has led to criticism of the well respected Profe Ortega, the club's fitness coach. Atletico has gone from crisis to crisis this season, and Thomas' latest declarations are just the latest.

Sports / Rudiger Reveals Who Caused Chelsea’s Loss To Leicester, Calls Teammates ‘stupid’ by faithdinno: 1:54am On Dec 24, 2018

Chelsea defender, Antonio Rudiger has blamed himself and his teammates after their 1-0 loss to Leicester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The German defender also ruled Chelsea out of the Premier League title race.
The defender called his teammates’ mentality “stupid.”
A single goal from Jamie Vardy gave Leicester City their first win at Stamford Bridge in 18 years.
Maurizio Sarri’s men also fell 11 points behind Premier League leaders, Liverpool.

Speaking after the final whistle, a clearly angry Rudiger ranted that the Blues can no longer think about the title.
He also revealed that the squad is lacking mental strength, calling the situation “stupid.”
Rudiger told Sky Sports, “It’s a disaster. We don’t talk about the title anymore.
“If we can’t win these games, we can’t compete. We only talk now about the top four.
“Maybe it’s a lack of mentality. Stupid.”

Sports / Chelsea Star Rejects Contract Extension by faithdinno: 1:27am On Dec 24, 2018

David Luiz has been enjoying a resurgence under Sarri after being ostracized under Conte last season, starting 17 of the 18 matches in the league thus far — the 2-1 lost to Wolves away is the only reason he is 90 minutes shy of having played every Premier League minute available to him — but that still may not be enough to keep him at Chelsea for another season.

According to the Times (as cited by the Express), the 31-year-old defender has rejected Chelsea’s offer a new one-year contract.

Prior to the game, David Luiz said that the best Christmas gift the players could give is a win against Leicester. So that’s gone just about the way of the best gift the club could give to David, a multi-year contract extension.

It’s Chelsea club policy to only offer one-year deals to players over 30, and David will have certainly been aware of this policy by now having seen it in effect even for the likes of John Terry and Frank Lampard. So even if Sarri has publicly declared his hope that Chelsea will bend the rule for the curly haired quarterback — “the club wants a short contract and the players want a long contract; it is difficult for this reason but I think we can find a solution” — that’s not likely to happen.

Unlike with Cesc Fabregas and Gary Cahill, both of whom are in similar situations but are just backups this season and have thus featured heavily in transfer rumors, David Luiz is a key starter and there has been barely any chatter over his future. While that probably will change following this bit of news, there’s probably still time left to figure out a new deal for next year.

Spain's Real Madrid won the Club World Cup for a third consecutive year, and record fourth in total, by beating Abu Dhabi side Al Ain in the final.

Luka Modric curled home the opening goal from the edge of the area after Karim Benzema's lay-off.

Marcos Llorente hit a stunning 25-yard half-volley - his first professional goal - and Sergio Ramos headed in the third from Modric's corner.

Tsukasa Shiotani nodded in for Al Ain before Yahya Nader's own goal.

Real could have won by more. Lucas Vazquez hit the post early on and Gareth Bale - who scored a semi-final hat-trick against Kashima Antlers - went close with a spectacular bicycle kick which went just over the bar.
Al Ain had shocked River Plate on penalties in the semi-final but never looked like following that up with a famous win at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Midfielder Toni Kroos has won five of the past six Club World Cups - in 2013 with Bayern Munich and 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 with the Spanish side.
Real now hold the record for most victories in the competition, which was first held in 2000, moving one clear of Spanish rivals Barcelona.

Sports / Manchester United Have Sacked Jose Mourinho As Manager by faithdinno: 12:42pm On Dec 18, 2018

Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho as manager after two and a half years in charge at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese, 55, guided United to League Cup and Europa League titles.

Mourinho's sacking comes after a fall-out with £89m record signing Paul Pogba, who was an unused substitute for the defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

But they are sixth in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, who beat them 3-1 on Sunday.
"A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager," United said in a statement.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future."

The caretaker-manager to replace Mourinho, who took over from Louis van Gaal in May 2016, will not be assistant coach Michael Carrick or academy boss Nicky Butt.

The candidate will be drawn from outside the club, but will not be former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

A familiar conclusion to a rocky season
United's haul of 26 points after their first 17 Premier League games, is their worst tally in the top flight at this stage since 1990-91.

They are 11 points off the top four and closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table.

Following a 1-1 draw with Wolves, midfielder Pogba said he wanted United to be able to "attack, attack, attack" at home, which led Mourinho to say the France midfielder would no longer be the club's "second captain".

In October, there were reports that Mourinho might be sacked prior to the home game against Newcastle, but after the team trailed 2-0, they turned it around to win 3-2 and seemingly buy the former Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid boss more time.

Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes attempted to calm the storm earlier in December by taking the extraordinary step of issuing a statement to say Mourinho was "very happy" and "fully committed" to the club.

But despite securing qualification to the Champions League last 16 where United will play Paris St-Germain, in the league though, they have won just one of their last six games.

Mourinho's dismissal continues his run of never completing four consecutive seasons in charge of a club.

Only once has he made it into a fourth campaign, but he left Chelsea on 17 December 2015 during his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils have won just two of their last eight matches in all competitions and sit 11 points off fourth place in the Premier League
Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Manchester United following their disappointing start to the season.
The Red Devils currently sit sixth in the Premier League table but have already lost five times in 17 matches, leaving them 19 points behind leaders Liverpool and 11 off fourth-placed Chelsea in the fight for Champions League places.

That follows a summer transfer window in which Mourinho routinely complained about a lack of signings, with the Portuguese unable to persuade the club's hierarchy to sign a new center-back.
Further to performances on the pitch, reports of dressing room unrest have overshadowed Man Utd's performances over the course of the season, with Mourinho's relationship with the club-record signing.

Paul Pogba a constant talking point.
World Cup winner Pogba has struggled for consistency under Mourinho, and this season things seem to have taken a turn for the worse, with the former Juventus man unable to hold down a regular berth in Mourinho's preferred 11.

After Mourinho, who signed a contract extension in January, was sacked Pogba tweeted: "Caption this," with a knowing expression on his face, before deleting the social media post.

Sports / Manchester United Star Ready To Exit In January Transfer by faithdinno: 6:10pm On Dec 14, 2018
Manchester United player, Antonio Valencia is set to leave United during the transfer window in January after having a bust out with the club’s manager, Jose Mourinho, according to reports
The United captain has not featured in a match since September after liking a social media post that called for Mourinho to be sacked.

Valencia publicly apologized immediately and then spoke to Mourinho directly, but still found himself out in the cold under his manager.

According to Super Sport, West Ham and several Spanish clubs are ready to sign the Ecuadorian in January.

Valencia’s agents sat down with United this week to discuss his future, as the defender continues to wait for a new contract offer.

But it seems the 33-year-old has now accepted his relationship with Mourinho is beyond repair.
Despite his difficulties with Mourinho, Valencia is in line to play against Liverpool on Sunday after United were hit with a host of injury concerns.

Defenders, Diogo Dalot, Matteo Darmian, and Luke Shaw are all battling injuries and Valencia is set to keep his place after playing against Valencia in the Champions League mid-week.

Sports / Champions League: Firmino Hands Liverpool Flying Champions League Start Over PSG by faithdinno: 5:40am On Sep 19, 2018
Roberto Firmino came off the bench to strike deep into stoppage time and hand Liverpool a deserved 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday.

Last season’s finalists showed the French champions have plenty of work to do if they are to mount a challenge for a first-ever Champions League title as they bounced back from blowing a 2-0 first-half lead.

Daniel Sturridge and a James Milner penalty put the hosts in command before Thomas Meunier reduced PSG’s arrears.
Having kept Kylian Mbappe and the world’s most expensive player Neymar quiet for almost the entire match, Liverpool seemed set to pay a heavy price for one slack pass by Mohamed Salah as Mbappe swept home seven minutes from time in front of a stunned Kop.

But Firmino, who started on the bench due to an eye injury suffered against Tottenham on Saturday, had the final say as he twisted and turned before firing into the far corner to stretch Liverpool’s perfect start to the season to six games.

Liverpool’s run to the final last season was characterized by fast starts that blew away Spartak Moscow, Manchester City, and Roma at Anfield and buoyed by a perfect start to the Premier League season, the hosts put PSG under severe pressure from the off.

Alphonse Areola has kept Gianluigi Buffon on the sidelines during the first few weeks of the 40-year-old’s PSG career and, with the Italian suspended for his red card in Juventus’ controversial exit to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals last season, started again between the sticks.

The French international was busy early on as he saved from Virgil van Dijk, Milner and Sadio Mane inside the first 10 minutes.

PSG have crumbled on their Champions League travels to Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the past two seasons and their ability to challenge for the competition was again questioned as they struggled to contain Liverpool’s greater speed and power in midfield.

Up front, Firmino’s absence opened the door for Sturridge to make his first Champions League start for the club.

The Englishman has been dogged by injury and lack of form during Klopp’s nearly three years in charge but took his chance on the big stage by powering home a pinpoint curling cross from Andy Robertson to open the scoring on the half-hour mark.
Six minutes later, PSG’s deficit was doubled when Juan Bernat tripped Georginio Wijnaldum inside the area and Milner slammed the resulting penalty into the bottom corner.

However, the visitors were handed a lifeline through right-back Meunier, rather than one of their famed front three, as the Belgian skilfully readjusted to volley home Robertson’s miscued clearance.

Klopp was annoyed at his side for having to survive a nervous finale in winning at Tottenham on Saturday after passing up a series of chances to put the game to bed.

And it was looked like this time they would pay as Salah had a goal ruled out for a foul by Sturridge before the latter headed a glorious chance into the arms of Areola.

Salah has struggled to match his stunning 44-goal form of last season in recent weeks and was substituted by Klopp moments after gifting PSG a route back into the game.

His slack pass was intercepted and quickly fed into Neymar, with Van Dijk’s tackle on the Brazilian only rebounding into the path of Mbappe to fire home.

Liverpool instantly went in search of a winner as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected free-kick came back off the woodwork, and finally got their reward when Firmino powered home.

Sports / I Regret Playing For Nigeria – Francisca Ordega by faithdinno: 5:32am On Sep 19, 2018
Francisca Ordega admits she regrets playing for Nigeria’s senior women national team.
The USA-based forward, said she would have opted for another country if there was a chance, because of the lack of support for women’s football in Nigeria.

Ordega was part of the Super Falcons team, that won a record 10th African Women Cup of Nations last weekend.
“If I had not played for Nigeria at the full international level, trust me I would have played somewhere else,” she told African football.

“The U17 and U20 teams have been blamed for the performances at their recent World Cups, but they were poorly prepared for these competitions.

“If this continues, Nigeria will soon cease to be a force in Africa because there will be no future Super Falcons.”

The Falcons are currently in Abuja, waiting to receive their bonuses from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Sports / Pep Guardiola Says Man City Could Slip Up And Hand Man Utd Premier League Title by faithdinno: 8:52pm On Apr 14, 2018
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his side could still slip up and allow Manchester United to win the Premier League title.

The city needs five points from their remaining six Premier League matches to secure the title ahead of Saturday evening's game against Tottenham, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

They travel to Wembley on the back of three straight defeats, having lost 5-1 to Liverpool over two legs in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and 3-2 to Jose Mourinho's United last weekend.

Guardiola is not ruling out further slip-ups from his side and used examples from Spanish football and the NBA to prove his point.

"It can happen," Guardiola said. "Football is emotional. We can only try to focus and win at Tottenham and then Swansea.

"The fact is that since November or December we were already champions. When I heard pundits and fans in November they said it's all done, it's impossible for City to drop points. In one week we lost three games, that happened.

"We are able to win the two games [we need to confirm the title] and we will do that. We handled the pressure between the good and bad moments for the entire season, not just in this period.

"Dealing with the end of season pressure is good for our future. We have to handle that. If we are not able to in the end and United win the league then all we can say is 'congratulations'.

"Of course it can happen, I assure you. Real Madrid, many years ago, lost six games in a row and didn't win the league. Of course, it can happen, no doubts about that. The players know that I don't need to tell them.

"Never before in the NBA had one team in the final recovered from 3-1 down. One year ago Cavaliers won 4-3 against Golden State Warriors, winning three games in a row.

"It's in hour hands, that is a good advantage. If we lose it will be in the same way we tried to play against United and Liverpool. Congratulations to the opponents if they beat us."

There have been suggestions that City's run of losses could be down to Guardiola's demanding style of play, but he rejected those claims saying the issues with his side are mental rather than physical.

He added: "No, I don't think so. Of course, it is tough but it is tough for everybody in the Premier League. It's not unusual for a team to win a lot of games and when they lose people ask 'what happened? We did not expect Manchester City to lose'.

"The way we run is not a problem. You have to understand that when [Mohamed] Salah scores his goal it is not a physical reaction [it's mental]. That is normal, they are human beings.

"But if we score the second goal or we score two or three goals you would see how they run and how aggressive they are. The condition for itself I think doesn't exist. The way we play we believe in.

"The problem is we shot three shots on target against Liverpool at home, that is the problem."

Sports / Coutinho And Suarez See Barcelona To La Liga History by faithdinno: 8:22pm On Apr 14, 2018
Ernesto Valverde's side proved too strong for Valencia in their latest outing and have set a new record of 39 games unbeaten in the Spanish top-flight

Barcelona has made La Liga history, with a 2-1 victory over Valencia seeing them stretch their record-breaking unbeaten run to 39 games.

Ernesto Valverde’s side entered the meeting with Los Che having matched the historic sequence of Real Sociedad’s legendary side who went 38 matches without a defeat in 1979 and 1980.

Barca’s class of 2017-18 now stand alone at the pinnacle of Spanish football, with domestic dominance being secured in some style.

A seven-game unbeaten run at the end of last season was not enough to see them pip Clasico rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga crown, but it did provide a platform on which to build.

A change in the dugout has made little impact at Camp Nou, with Valverde having picked up the baton dropped by Luis Enrique and run with it.

His side has yet to come unstuck in league action this term, with 32 games now safely negotiated.

The latest of those saw them overcome Valencia on home soil, with Luis Suarez and Samuel Umtiti getting the goals.

January signing Philippe Coutinho also starred for the Blaugrana, providing the assists for both efforts on the day.

Barca is now 14 points clear at the top of the table, ahead of a Sunday outing for closest challengers Atletico Madrid, and are edging their way ever closer to another title triumph.

It remains to be seen whether they can navigate the entire campaign without suffering defeat, but they have already re-written the history books and can be rightly proud of their efforts.

A remarkable run of form means that you have to turn the clock back to April 8, 2017, to find the last time all-conquering Barca came away with nothing in a La Liga fixture.

Sports / Guardiola Blasts Manchester United, Chelsea For Rejecting VAR by faithdinno: 7:54pm On Apr 14, 2018
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has accused Manchester United and Chelsea of being among the clubs that rejected the introduction of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the Premier League next season.

Guardiola, speaking after the decision was made official, claimed City voted in favor of VAR.

“I think Manchester City agreed to it but the other top teams, United and Chelsea I think, they didn’t want it,” the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss said.

In a statement after a shareholders’ meeting on Friday, the Premier League noted: “The decision came after comprehensive discussions regarding the progress made in VAR trials in English football, and key learnings from the many competitions using it elsewhere.

“The clubs recognized and are grateful for the substantial developments made by PGMOL Managing Director Mike Riley and his team.

“The clubs agreed that advanced testing will continue to the end of Season 2018/19 to make further improvements to the system, especially around communication inside the stadium and for those following at home and around the world.”

Sports / Conte Reveals Those Who Must Take Blame For Chelsea’s Poor Season by faithdinno: 7:35pm On Apr 14, 2018
Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has insisted he is not solely to blame for their dismal title defense.

According to him, the players and the club must also take responsibility.

The Blues’ top-four hopes are all but over, after falling 10 points behind fourth-placed Spurs.

Chelsea has just the FA Cup left to salvage something from their season and they face Southampton in the semi-final.

“If we don’t qualify for the Champions League it means that we have to divide the fault with the players.

“This is not the first time. Two years ago the same happened at Chelsea. I didn’t see many players leaving then. We made a lot of mistakes this season – me, my staff, the players and the club.

“Whether we win or lose, we must be ready to share the responsibility,” Conte told a news conference on Friday.

Sports / Move Over Morata! Comeback Hero Giroud Shows He Should Start For Chelsea by faithdinno: 7:18pm On Apr 14, 2018
Chelsea's miserable 2018 looked certain to continue as they trailed Southampton 2-0, but substitute Olivier Giroud instigated a stunning late comeback

Olivier Giroud inspired crisis-hit Chelsea to a stunning 3-2 comeback win at Southampton on Saturday, scoring twice off the bench to show Antonio Conte exactly why he should now be a first-team starter.

Alvaro Morata once again disappointed as Chelsea’s lone frontman, as Southampton led 2-0 after an hour of play. And it was only when Giroud replaced Morata, who has now been subbed three games in a row, that the away side turned the game on its head.

A stunning header and a laser-sharp finish from the former Arsenal frontman were more than his colleague managed all game, while Eden Hazard also got his 16th goal of the season as Chelsea scored three times in the final 20 minutes. It was the first time Chelsea had won a Premier League game from 2-0 down since 2002 when they beat Charlton 3-2.

For much of the game, it was Chelsea rather than Southampton – their goals scored by Dusan Tadic and Jan Bednarek - who looked like the relegations strugglers. The Blues had only won three times in 2018 ahead of the match and they looked bereft of confidence for an hour.

Chelsea's problems remain despite a rare moment to shout about, but their positive result was much needed as Arsenal and even Burnley are threatening to overtake them in the fifth position. There is now a seven-point gap between Chelsea and the final Champions League position, but a top-four spot still looks incredibly unlikely with just a month of the season remaining.

This term we have witnessed one of the Premier League's limpest title defenses but at least Chelsea can feel more confident going into next week’s FA Cup semi-final where they will again play Southampton.

Giroud would be right to demand that he starts that game ahead of Morata. Indeed, Conte needs to drop his struggling £58 million signing from Real Madrid and unleash the former Arsenal striker from the first minute.

Morata may be a club record buy but the Frenchman is outperforming him. Morata’s 13-game goal drought damaged Chelsea massively and he has been a big factor in the club's failures this season.

He is also battling to get into Spain's squad ahead of the World Cup. Meanwhile, Giroud is a certainty for France's squad and he is showing exactly why in a different blue shirt. Now it is time for Conte to recognize reality, too.

Sports / Cahill The Hero As Socceroos See Off Syria by faithdinno: 3:28am On Oct 13, 2017
Australia beat Syria 2-1 after extra-time in AFC Play-off
Tim Cahill scores two headers to move to 50 international goals
Socceroos qualify for Intercontinental Play-off

Tim Cahill kept Australia’s FIFA World Cup™ dreams alive with a superb headed double as Ange Postecoglou’s side beat Syria 2-1 after extra-time.

The goals in Sydney were the Socceroos captain and all-time leading scorer’s 49th and 50th for his country and set up an Intercontinental Play-off against the fourth-placed team in the CONCACAF Zone.

Australia squeezed through the hard way though, coming from behind and enduring some tense and difficult moments despite dominating much of this epic AFC play-off.

They were behind inside six minutes, in fact, when a stray Mark Milligan pass in midfield set up a Syrian counter-attack. The visitors grasped their opportunity to strike, with Tamer Mohamd sprinting through the heart of the Aussie defence and feeding Omar Al Soma for a left-foot shot that sailed high into the net.

Australia weren’t behind for long, though, and it was no surprise that Cahill was the man to haul them level. It was a superb equaliser too, with the veteran forward heading powerfully home at the end of a slick move on the right wing capped by a glorious Mathew Leckie cross.

From that moment onwards, the game was a tale of complete domination by Australia, who monopolised possession without always being able to find a way through the packed and well-organised Syrian defence. The Socceroos continued to struggle even after Mahmoud Al Mawas was sent off for a second bookable offence following a rash challenge on Robbie Kruse.

It took until extra time for a winner to be found and, again, it was that man Cahill. The Aussie hero completed his half-century of international goals with yet another header, showing off his famous leap to direct home a looping Kruse cross.

Australia will now wait to discover who they will face in that Intercontinental Play-off, with their opponents set to be decided by this evening’s CONCACAF qualifying fixtures. The Aussies will face the fourth-placed side in the 'Hex', with USA, Panama or Honduras all potential opponents for them next month.

Sports / Charly Musonda Faces Chelsea Punishment by faithdinno: 3:21am On Oct 13, 2017
Charly Musonda has risked possible punishment from Chelsea after hinting his frustration over a lack of progress at the club.

The 20-year-old has made just one appearance for the Blues – last month’s Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest, in which he scored – since moving to Stamford Bridge from Anderlecht five years ago.

Musonda’s concerns have been evident for some time. In January 2016 he asked to leave due to a lack of first-team opportunities and eventually joined Real Betis on loan.

That temporary switch was extended into the 2016-17 season but Musonda was recalled by manager Antonio Conte in January of this year after making just one solitary start during the campaign.
Conte opted to keep Musonda despite interest from several clubs including Roma amid a suggestion he had a chance of being involved on a more regular basis at Chelsea.

However, Musonda, who has also struggled with injury during his time at the club, has been largely overlooked.

Alongside an image of a black screen, Musonda wrote on Instagram: “You sacrifice, you work hard, harder, you give more than what's expected, and often more than you can, because you love what you do and clearly more than you should.

“And what do you get back? 'Literally nothing,... done. However, with this being said I will continue with same dedication and commitment to this great game.”
Chelsea were unavailable for comment when contacted by Standard Sport this morning but Conte may take a dim view of a player using social media to complain about his treatment at the club.

The Blues have a long history of loaning out youngsters with little prospect of breaking through at their parent club. Their official website currently lists 34 players out on loan including Tammy Abraham at Swansea and Kurt Zouma at Stoke.
Matej Delac, who has played for ten different teams since joining Chelsea in 2010, revealed in July that the players sent out by Chelsea have created their own Whatsapp group to communicate with each other.

“It is true all of us players on loan are in a special Whatsapp group where we regularly get information on who played best that matchday, who was especially good, who played how many minutes,” he said.

Sports / The Seven Crunch Games Injured Chelsea Striker Alvaro Morata Could by faithdinno: 11:11pm On Oct 03, 2017
Striker Alvaro Morata could miss seven matches for Chelsea over the coming weeks after the Spanish Football Federation revealed he has sustained a myofascial injury to his hamstring muscles.
The summer signing from Real Madrid came off holding his thigh in Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Manchester City, though manager Antonio Conte initially suggested he had been withdrawn only as a precaution.

But the injury is more serious than first realised, and typically requires four to six weeks to recover from, potentially ruling Morata out of an incredibly busy period of fixtures for Chelsea.
The Premier League champions takes on bottom-of-the-table Crystal Palace after the international break, the start of a run of seven games in 23 days – culminating in a title clash at the start of November…

Although Morata would have been unlikely to face Everton in the Carabao Cup, he will miss decisive back-to-back Champions League ties against Roma.

The Italian giants are Chelsea’s closest rivals in Group C, having picked up four points from their opening two matches, and have been in excellent form in Serie A, winning five of their first six matches.
Crystal Palace v Chelsea (PREM) – Saturday October 14
Chelsea v Roma (UCL) – Wednesday October 18
Chelsea v Watford (PREM) – Saturday October 21
Chelsea v Everton (EFL) – Wednesday October 25
Bournemouth v Chelsea (PREM) – Saturday October 28
Roma v Chelsea (UCL) – Tuesday October 31
Chelsea v Manchester United (PREM) – November 5
The biggest blow will come on Bonfire Night, right at the end of Morata’s recovery timetable, when the Blues host Manchester United – a match they cannot afford to lose after dropping points to City already.
There is a slim chance he could make the matchday squad if recovers at the quickest possible rate, potentially providing an awkward encounter with United after the club ditched their summer-long pursuit to sign Romelu Lukaku instead.

Fortunately for Chelsea, there will be another international break beginning just after they take on United, giving Morata another two weeks to get back to full fitness if he is still not 100% fit.
